Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
The first case was the solution of the case started in the previous volume - the murder of Toji's mother. Although it wasn't Vermouth, the solution was interesting. I expected a full-fledged reappearance of one of the member of the Black Organization, though.
The second case was of the Snowman sculpture. This was intriguing because it explained the solution using science, rather than physiological or psychological evidence. It made me recall what I had learned back in school - the use of salt for freezing and melting.
The Phantom corpse case was the best of the lot, because it was truly mind-boggling. The explanation was equally amazing - using the statue containers to cover up the stains.
The Detective Koshien case, incomplete in this volume, is bugging me. What's the motive of inviting the detectives from the four directions? Was it to murder Junya? Or is there a mystery behind all the lavender? But it is also amusing because of Heiji and Hakuba Saguru's little squabbles.
On to the next volume!

"Words are a sword. Wielded without care, that sword can kill. Choose your words wisely before you unsheathe them against someone... no matter who that person may be."
I love the nuggets of wisdom that pop up in these books. ^_^
As much as I love when the detectives of east and west team up, I found the cases to be a bit of a letdown. There wasn't anything particularly exciting about the mysteries in terms of modus operandi.
Vol. 54 starts off where 53 left off with the mystery of the dead heiress and her son thinks a strange "foreign lady" killed her. Eisuke, Rachel's klutzy classmate, is on Conan's radar for having a possible connection with the Men in Black and an overly invested desire to uncover the mystery of the foreign woman.
Following the resolution of that case, the next one involves the Junior Detective League and a confounding murder involving snow... The last full case of the series centers around Harley and Kazuha visiting the Moore family and Conan to view the cherry blossoms and running into a case involving a disappearing corpse.
The final mystery included centers around a greet teen detective tournament hosted by a suspicious tv special where Harley and Conan are taken to a secluded island along with three other teen detectives pitted against one another to solve mystery but all is not what it seems as one of contestants end up dead..
The Men in Black are in the story again! I don't know how I feel about it as now we are on volume 54 and they don't appear to have given us much more than they first did when the adventures began...but it is here anyways to kick off the book. The next story concerns a woman who dies in a snowboarding accident...but everything rarely is as it appears on the service. Detective Conan has a few things that just don't sit right with him...and he suspects that there might be foul play. The next story deals with a cherry blossom viewing turned into a case for Harley and Detective Conan! There is a mystery surrounding the monks and a dead body...or was it a ghost? This story seemed interesting and had a moral to the story at the end about the power of words. The next story involves a Detective contest! Harley might have the most page appearances in any book since his introduction in this very volume. I like these older detectives (adolescent ones I guess you can call them) as they are all quick witted, but it just has a different feel to it. This volume ends with a dead body being found...and so of course is a cliff-hanger story to be completed in the next volume.
I really enjoyed this volume, especially since it continued the main plot about the Ravens gang. Eisuke is such a clever and sharp character! The crime cases in this volume were masterfully crafted, even though the solutions felt a little unrealistic at times. My favorite chapter was definitely the one with the dead mother and the child who was in the motorcycle accident, which heavily injured Rena. I was also really into the chapter with the teenage detectives.
2 rather boring cases ( solving the mystery of a dead woman ina house and a dead woman in the snow. We experience the case of a dead woman in a house and she suddenly vanishes. However there is no trace left of her. Heiji is in this one too so even better. Lastly we get introduced to an amazing case where different young detectives compete against each other.

General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
THE VANISHING WITNESS AND THE BLACK ORGANIZATION’S SHADOW Eisuke enlists Kogoro’s help in investigating a bizarre case involving swapped garbage, believing it to be linked to The Red-Headed League. Their search leads them to a murder scene where a young boy claims a foreign woman questioned him about an accident. Conan pieces the clues together and realizes the woman is Vermouth from the Black Organization, and the boy unknowingly witnessed the FBI’s clash with them. Now, the Organization knows Rena Mizunashi is in a coma, raising the stakes in this deadly game of espionage.
THE FROZEN TRUTH: MURDER AT THE SKI RESORT A winter retreat turns sinister when a university student vanishes during a blizzard. When her body is found at the bottom of a cliff, the police rule it a tragic snowboarding accident. But Conan’s keen eye catches an unsettling detail—her missing hat, goggles, and gloves. As suspicion falls on her companions, Conan races against time to expose the murderer hiding behind the snowfall.
THE FESTIVAL'S PHANTOM: A VANISHING CORPSE AT THE TEMPLE During a festival in Kumamoto, a student monk seeks Kogoro’s help to solve a baffling case—a woman’s lifeless body, stabbed in the chest, mysteriously disappears from the temple. The head monk denies its existence, dismissing the student’s claims as delusions. But is the student truly mistaken, or is the temple hiding a sinister secret? With Heiji and Conan on the case, the truth behind the vanishing corpse will soon be revealed.
Definitely a bit of a come-down from all the Edogawa Rampo I've been reading lately, but this is still a fun, light mystery series that proves engaging, if not hugely challenging. The tatami mat mystery (AKA the titular moving shrine room) is the strongest, but all four cases in the book are good quick reads.
