Wylde Hearts #1

That Wylde Woman!

Rate this book
A Duke, a Rogue, a bold American woman - a trio destined for a battle of passions.

The wealthy, titled Ton has the uncharitable habit of labeling an educated, unmarried woman as a bluestocking and, therefore, boringly dull. Breaking that bias is the American-born Lady Marleigh, who appeals to all guests with cheerful debates on the merits of horse racing or delivering advice on land purchases and eagerly confirming the enormous profits to be had in the colonies. When a smitten duke requests business advice, she is pleased with his assurance he will use her suggestions. A factory incident steers his reversal, creating conflict, distrust, and wounded hearts.

A sly cousin tries to assume control over Marleigh’s family estate. His attempt foiled, he appears weeks later, professing remorse and requesting family harmony. The apologetic duke writes frequent letters to Marleigh in his struggle to restore their relationship. Marleigh keeps a polite but distinct emotional distance from both men while considering her true heart’s desire.

With powerful emotions and a strong conflict, this Second Chance Regency Romance (Wylde Hearts Series, Book 1) is sure to capture your heart. If you enjoyed Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, then you will love That Wylde Woman!

Favs- hot coffee, chocolate, & a good book.

Historical Regency Romance is where Gloria’s heart found a home. There is something charming, yet imperfect, about the social mores, politics, etiquette, and clothing of the Regency, Georgian, and Edwardian eras that intrigues audiences today.

Gloria follows hints and legends in historical records for her stories to create drama and the possibility of real-life adventures for readers to contemplate. All regency stories have an element of the struggle women confronted daily to be acknowledged as intelligent, thinking humans. The series is about women and men in the 19th century, particularly a man with both faults and a generous nature. Characters can sometimes become more than first imagined by the author. Regardless of one character’s flaws, I couldn’t help but find him a worthy and exciting subject. The fact that all the males learn life lessons from the women they love is purposeful.

Learn more about Robert and the women of his entire family in the Prequel, Knave of Hearts, and Book 1 of the Wylde Hearts series, That Wylde Woman, and in the future, look for Book 3, Wylde Hearts’ Rogue, in 2026.

Even after teaching English word structure and syllabication for years, I continue to be fascinated with the English language. Our language is a gloriously accommodating blend of Saxon, Norwegian, German, Latin, Greek, French, and a few others sprinkled in for good measure. I still marvel at how fluid it can be, changing and expanding over time.

My most pleasurable teaching moments were showing students how a wondrous story can take their imaginations to other times, places, even other worlds.

I started my first foray into publishing with a nonfiction book, *The Sensible Parent’s Little Homeschooler Handbook.*

This book is a most interesting book. You have two possible love matches and a whole number of characters having an opinion of said love matches. Shall I proceed? Alright then. Why is it that high society has to make it their ultimate mission on a daily basis to have an opinion or insert themselves in someone else’s affairs who lives ten streets over? My gosh, Marleigh the FMC- it’s a wonder that she didn’t go running back to America. Well, Marleigh toughened it out and made a fine mark on British Society. I thought her character was very refreshing for the plot. How Marleigh character interacted with other characters really prompted good entertainment. The romance was very flirtatious between the characters. I enjoyed the book immensely. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

American businesswoman Marleigh Barrett finds herself in England to help her father in gaining his title and join the bon ton once again. Bring in Robert Mandeville, the bad guy of the book. Robert is scheming and conniving a way to swindle the title away from the Barretts and take it for himself. What he didn't count on was Marleigh getting in his way. Marleigh takes it upon herself to help her father run his new Estate. There she learns about farming practices, the sheep industry, and even how to run a household. To add on to her already busy schedule, Marleigh finds herself between two "Adonis"s, one light and one dark, and has to decide which one holds her heart. But would Marleigh have to give up her freedom to become a part of the British gentry?

Things I liked:
Marleigh is a firecracker of a character. She is headstrong, independent, and very intelligent. Marleigh has a savvy business woman makes an appearance quite often, and to her benefit! The author writes her character as one for the people, while successfully profiting everyone involved. A majority of her character throughout the book is implementing business practices to her father's new estate. It was interesting to get a character so independent in an HR.
The entire sword scene in the beginning between Marleigh and Swansea
The time spent setting the scene about what country life was like in the early 1800s in England, such as focusing on women's work and treatment in factories
How Marleigh was correct at the third act break-up plot (she is always right)

Things I didn't care for:
There were almost too many plot points throughout the book. It felt like the main romance between Andrew and Marleigh was more of a subplot, and the main focus was Marleigh becoming a manager of her father's estate. There is a lot of detail and time spent to specific farming/estate running practices. There are also so many scenes that didn't seem to positively affect the main plot of the book, such as the almost carriage accident between Marleigh's father and the bad guy or even the secondary love interest's entire plotline.
The continued repetition of "Dark Adonis" and the reverberation of Andrew's voice having a physical effect on Marleigh
Andrew just came on too strong from the beginning in my opinion. It sort of made the relationship seem to come about almost too fast because Marleigh was hesitant in the beginning.

Overall it was a cute story that read more like historical fiction instead of historical romance. There were a lot of different plotlines happening in this book, which made it confusing to read at certain points- it felt like there was no plot just a million of them happening at the same time. But it was generally interesting and the FMC was a thoroughly enjoyable heroine.

At the heart of the story are three compelling characters: the smitten duke, the scheming rogue, and the bold Lady Marleigh, an American-born bluestocking who defies societal norms by engaging in cheerful debates and dispensing advice on topics as diverse as horse racing and land investments. Oh, and let’s not forget she is quite a fearless adept at sword fighting. Accustomed to society’s rejection of strong female characters, readers will be delighted to find that The Ton is intrigued by Lady Marleigh's intelligence and charm - almost too accepting and admiring to be remotely believable, but it makes for an unusual story. She is admired instead of vilified.

The storyline is complex and intricately woven. It was lively, humorous, and fast-paced from the opening scene, where a sly cousin puts in motion his plan to control Lady Marleigh's family estate. This was a very humorous beginning, and the resultant turmoil is a complicated thread throughout the book.

As if that weren’t enough, when Lady Marleigh offers business advice to an enamored duke, she sets in motion a chain of events that leads to a factory incident, causing conflict, distrust, and wounded hearts. And though, of the two strong suitors, we quickly choose our favorite. I was happy to see that a debutante can have choices. This, too, is unusual and refreshing.

The author masterfully creates vivacious and humorous characters, making the reader genuinely care for their fates.
I would have given it a solid five stars if it had been better edited. The POV was at times confusing, and little mistakes like quotes not closed or inconsistent names and misspellings were a distraction. Despite these flaws, the fast pace, intricate plot, and engaging characters kept me riveted and genuinely caring for the characters.

It's a Regency romance filled with passion and intrigue, making it a very good read for those who appreciate well-drawn characters and a captivating storyline.

A Spirited Romance

Diving into "That Wylde Woman!" was like stepping into a Regency romance with a delicious twist. Lady Marleigh is not your typical demure debutante; she's a firecracker with a sharp wit and a will of iron, making her one of the most engaging heroines I've encountered in a while.

The dynamic between Lady Marleigh and the Duke is electric. Their banter is charged with a mix of antagonism and undeniable attraction, creating a tension that's as frustrating as it is addictive. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, with moments that had me sighing in frustration and others where I couldn't help but cheer them on.

What sets this book apart is its blend of traditional Regency charm with a dash of modern spirit, courtesy of Lady Marleigh's unconventional upbringing and bold disposition. Her determination to rebuild the ancestral estate while navigating societal expectations and her own desires is both inspiring and relatable.

The supporting cast of characters adds depth and color to the story, from loyal friends to scheming foes, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Lady Marleigh's world. The ancestral estate, with its secrets and history, is almost a character in its own right, providing a gothic backdrop to the unfolding drama.

If there's any critique, it's that at times the story's pace feels hurried, with so much packed into the narrative that some plot twists seem to resolve a bit too conveniently. But this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable read.

After both his elder brothers died mysteriously, William Barrett returned to England with his daughter to claim the title of Earl of Wylde. Being born a third son he made his fortune in America.
Capable, emancipated and very independent, Marleigh Barrett finds adjusting to English society rather uninteresting. She’s only here to get the family estate up and running. Instead she finds herself dispelling rumours and ducking fortune hunters.

Serving the Crown and the War Office in France, Andrew Crofton returned after the war and inherited the dukedom of Pangbourne. Hiding from the clingy ton mamas at a ball, he observes a young woman bravely fence off an overzealous suitor. Quickly assessing the one detail she missed, he makes sure the cad doesn’t get any ideas.
And thus the unlikely friendship between a very English duke and an outspoken American heiress begins. He’s immediately smitten, but she proves quite immune to his dukish charms. Or is she?

📚 Lots of funny banter, plenty of romance, land management, female empowerment, a misunderstanding, thievery, a kidnapping and a mad dash for Gretna Green. The gentlemen in this book are charming. The lady is maybe a bit much. But all in all it’s an entertaining and interesting book with a lot of side stories. I’m curious to see where they’ll go in the next books.
📚 American heiress/new duke, cultural differences, he falls first, friends to lovers

This is the first of the Wylde Hearts series and my first experience reading something by this author. Marleigh is an American businesswoman and she has come with her father to England to help him claim his title. Marleigh is an intelligent woman, and while in England, she learns a great deal about running an estate. During her time there she meets Robert, who is a scheming man trying to snatch the title out from under Marleigh's father. Then there is the Duke, who was completely captivated by her. It is up to Marleigh to decide who to give her heart to.
There were a lot of other plots intermingling with the story, which my guess is will probably play out in future books. It was interesting to see how the romance advanced, although I would have liked to have seen more romantic scenes, but overall it was an entertaining story.

"That Wylde Woman" is a compelling and well-written historical romance novel that transports readers to the enchanting world of the Regency era. The narrative revolves around a resolute heroine and a determined duke, weaving a tale rich in romance, intrigue, and surprising turns of events. The author skillfully captures the essence of the time, immersing you in the societal nuances and complexities of the Regency period. The strength of the novel, however, lies in its well-crafted characters, particularly the independent and spirited heroine, whose journey is both empowering and captivating. The dynamics between the characters add depth to the storyline. The plot is carefully constructed, blending elements of love and suspense to keep you engaged throughout. Overall, the book is able to bring historical settings to life while delivering a compelling romance. It offers an immersive experience filled with passion, resilience, and the timeless allure of Regency romance.

That Wylde Woman is a loving and sweet offering by Gloria Goldsmith. This Regency Romance has all the trademarks of the genre, and places a strong and independent female lead as the main character and focus of the romance plot.

Marleigh is one strong woman and I loved her for that. She comes from high aristocracy, yes, but that does not take away her accomplishments and drive in coming to Britain to help her father with her estate. I enjoyed her witty remarks and intellect throughout - quite the head turner and unconventional character for the genre.

The romance runs deep and ramps up as the book progresses, and I was genuinely absorbed into the pages. The duke warmed to me quickly and I could see the appeal in him. The wit between him and Marleigh had me laughing and gave them an authentic feel. The ending felt natural, with the closing words being apt given the writing style and humour throughout.

This book follows the story of an American woman whose father returns to England to take his rightful title after deaths in the family. In found it hard to get into this book in the beginning because of the many changing view points. I also felt there was just too much other stuff going on in this book for me to stay very interested in the romance portion. I was was hoping for a little more romantic scenes between the main two characters . I found it hard to keep my interest until half way through this book. I felt is was much more historical fiction with a splash of romance, so if that is what you are looking for a more day to day look at the main characters life I think you would enjoy this book. Thank you net gallery and to the publisher for providing a copy of this book for me to read.

Gloria Goldsmith has given us a regency romance filled with romance, intrigue, and heart. The book is written in 3rd person, which I actually enjoy. The lead character of Lady Marleigh is a great twist on a leading female character. She's smart, feisty, and not afraid to put her foot down.

The plot was different enough to be interesting, with the romance subplot being very exciting. The main male lead, Andrew, was handsome and charming, as any good regency romance lead should be.

The chemistry between the two characters sizzled, and I was rooting for the two to get their second chance. Fans of Sabrina Jeffries and Nina Jarrett will enjoy this series.

I had to DNF this book at 40%. The plot at that point had mostly been about estate maintenance and upkeep, which was less boring that it could have been. I love how much agency Goldsmith gave the leading lady. What made me have to give up the read was the childish and cringy references to anatomy in the saucy parts. It was very jarring and seemed completely out of character for Marleigh.

It's the first book of a series and you can tell, mostly because this book has so many plots that didn't add anything to the main story but i know that would serve for future stories, the chemistry between the two main characters is good

I give this a solid 3.5. There is some head hopping, the plot is a bit convoluted, and it could've used some more intensive developmental editing, however, I thought the main character was delightfully brash and there were some fun moments. I'm always game for a heroine who can wield a sword.

American raised heiress and half owner of a shipping line, Lady Marleigh accompanies her father to England for him to claim his newly inherited title as Earl. A distant cousin has spread accusations of treason against the new Earl, attempting to gain the title for himself. When this does not work, he sets his sights on Marleigh and her fortune.
Marleigh meets Andrew Crofton, Duke of Pangbourne, at a ball and he is immediately enthralled by Marleigh's self-confidant, brash, out-spoken demeanor, so different from the proper miss of the ton he meets in droves, all dull duplicates of each other, not a single original thought amongst them. But when he suggests to Marleigh, a relationship more than just friends she balks. She never intends to give up her independence to a man, she likes working and is good at her job. Andrew sets out to court her hoping to convince him of his sincerity in saying she can keep her money and her independence if she will only accept him.
I enjoyed this story, I did not like one part of it, but I will not dwell on that because that is just me and may be fine for everyone else. But Marleigh is a strong, brash talking Lady unlike any the ton has seen before!! She gains the attention of many of the young men of society. This story takes you from London to the English countryside, and has some elements of a thriller along with the romance when it comes to cousin Robert and his exploits. All in all it is a quick paced read that holds the reader's interest and moves along at a nice speed. Nothing too heavy in it, just fun!!
