The fifth edition of “School Counseling Ethics and Law” is a casebook based on actual situations school counselors have encountered. The landscape of legal and ethical behavior changes frequently as courts, government, school boards and public opinion weigh in. The more than 180 case studies will generate a lively discussion among practitioners and school counseling candidates alike. Cases are designed to assess principles of law as established by courts, federal and state statutes, and school board policies. Legal and ethical analysis is needed to address each case, and all cases are based on reality. This edition addresses recent court rulings affecting the profession, including cases involving school counselors and child abuse, good-faith reporting, judicial bypass for abortions, transgender youth, social media, negligence in suicide, dating violence, peer-to-peer sexual harassment, undocumented students and more.
This is the best school counseling law and ethics book I have read! It provides great examples, specific court cases, and tells you where you can find more information for your state. There are a few topics I wish it had covered and a few places where I wish the author would provide more information. However, it is, hands down, the best book I have read on the topic. All school counselors should read this book!
I love how this book book broke down the ASCA Ethical Standards to show when exactly to use them. It was also great to read through the scenarios and see exactly what should have been done and should be done. The language of this book is also very easy to read, it's not theoretical.
