Like reading a modern, Canadian Faulkner novel. Disturbing and wonderfully written. The beginning was a bit slow for my tastes, which is really this book's only flaw, and why I dislike that this website doesn't allow half-stars.

This is the second of Hannah's novels I've read, but it is the first one he wrote. Neither leave any doubt as to his story-telling abilities. As soon as you begin reading your attention is caught by such realism that it's more like watching real people live real lives than reading a book. What a wonderful talent this writer has.

The setting is small town New Brunswick on Canada's east coast. The authour was raised in the area and knows it well, so local details are plentiful and accurate. A Maritimer myself, I love reading books set in my home province.

The story follows four main characters as their lives gradually become increasingly tangled up in each other. There is Margaret, a middle aged single woman, survivor of abuse, living with her sister, Minnie, one of the most annoying (and familiar) characters I've ever read. Then there is Gloria, still living at home with her parents, working as a house cleaner and trying to get her three brothers home for a family reunion none of them want. Chaleur is a teenage boy agonizing over his girlfriends decision to get an abortion and in a strange twist later finds himself the victim of unlawful confinement. The perpetrator of this crime is Sandy, an aging, tortured man living alone after the mother he'd nursed for years passes away. Sandy is.....odd.

All of these characters and many others are portrayed with all the gritty reality you'd ever want. Nothing is romanticized; all the sad, sweet, mean, funny and horrible things human beings do to each other are a part of this story. This is about as real as it gets and I love that about Hannah's character's. I love that I recognize them. I don't love all the cursing or the weird sexual stuff. I realize those things are part of what makes these characters and their stories so real and I know I'm very old fashioned when it comes to these things, but there you have it. I'll never get used to it because I don't want to, even if it does reduce the enjoyment I get out of reading some really great books. Like this one.

The thing I enjoy most about Don Hannah's writing is its naturalness. In both The Wise And Foolish Virgins and Ragged Islands it's as though instead of just writing them he breathes the stories out There is an even rhythm that you never have to stop and think about; for the reader it's a lovely experience.

All in all a great story and great writing, with the one caveat of strong language. My favorite line from the book? "A shining future was behind him." A sad fact of life for so many of us and a perfect example of Hannah's capacity for poignant authenticity.

סנדי וויט זקן תמהוני, ערירי ובודד מאז שאמו נפטרה חי לבדו בבית
שפעם היה סמל לכסף אבל היום זקוק לשיפוצים נרחבים. הוא אומנם
פעם יצא עם מרגרט, אבל בסתר ליבו הוא הומו המסתתר בארון.

גלוריה, היא המנקה שלו. היא מארגנת כנס להשיב את אחיה הצעיר
מהגלות שגזר על עצמו רחוק מהמשפחה. רק מה, אחיה הצעיר ריימונד
מגיע יחד עם חבר שלו אל ומסתבר ששניהם חולים באיידס.

מילא איידס, שהיא מחלה ערמומית שניתן להדבק בה דרך השירותים,
אבל ריימונד מתנהג בצורה מאוד מוזרה וגורם לכולם לחשוב שהוא מאבד את שפיותו.

דני וג'וניור הם אחים של גלוריה, שני אלכוהליסטים, משועממים,
שנפרדו מהחברות שלהם. להבנתי יש להם תפקיד מרכזי בסיפור אבל אני
לא מגלה לכם כי זה החלק שקראתי מהסוף להתחלה .

מרגרט, עובדת ב"קו החם" נגד הפלות. אביה נהג להתעלל בה מינית
ולאנוס אותה, עד שהתפגר אי שם באירופה כאשר נשלח להלחם במשהו.
אמא שבצעירותה נהגה להעלים עין ממעשי האב, מתה לפני מספר שנים
ומאז היא חיה יחד עם אחותה מיני שאת ימיה היא מעבירה בבליסה מול הטלביזיה ובניסיון למנוע ממרגרט לצאת עם סנדי וויט.

שני הטיפוסים האחרונים הם שאלר, שהכניס את חברתו אנט להריון
ובהיותו שיכור נילכד ע"י סנדי שהחליט שהוא מאוהב בו ולכן הוא
כולא אותו. ואנט שמתלבטת אם לעשות הפלה ונעזרת במרגרט לשם
התייעצות מבלי לדעת שמרגרט עובדת בקו נגד הפלות.

למרות שהכתיבה רצינית וטובה הוא נמרח, יותר מידי תיאוריישן
ותמונות נוף ופחות מידי עלילה. במצב הדברים, בו שאלר לכוד
אצל סינדי המטורף, זה מוציא את הקורא מהדעת.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Found all the characters fascinating and sympathetically portrayed. Interesting undertones of religion, class, sexuality, age, life and death. It's initially a slow-burner but really draws you in - I couldn't put it down. Nicely structured, flicking between narratives of main characters. Keeps it interesting and makes for some sweetly amusing irony. Yeah, good stuff.

This was my bedtime story for the past month and I finally finished the last 2 chapters last night, feeling really satisfied.

It's a simple but great story on the messed up lives behind every individuals who seem to be normal on the outside. The Canadian and Christian settings were relatable, while the conflicts between each characters were nicely described and linked together at the end.

Definitely did not expect a good book like that on a $1 clearance book sale!

Meandering.

This book should have a trigger warning. It includes very explicit descriptions of pedophillic rape from a father on a toddler, and one character kidnaps and then molests, and neglects a underage boy. Again this is in explicit detail.

Overall the book has some interesting bits though I found it far too real to enjoy. It's has some interesting explorations of family, and notions of how our past traumas and imaginations of family can define us, but also traps us and hold us back.
