Rate this book

In Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner! award-winning historian and author Colonel Lochlainn Seabrook sets the record straight in this easy-to-read, well documented handbook that confronts the North's many falsehoods about the American Civil War - important facts the anti-South Movement has been suppressing for 150 years! Divided into convenient chapters, such as "Cause of the War," "Secession," "Slavery," "The Abolition Movement," "Jefferson Davis," "Abraham Lincoln," "The Emancipation Proclamation," "The Union and Blacks," "Yankee War Crimes," "Prisons," and "The Confederate Flag" (among many others), this bestselling exposé of Yankee anti-South propaganda has the power to heal hearts and change minds. For in reeducating the world about Lincoln's War it will give Northerners a better understanding of the conflict itself, while making Southerners, of all races and political persuasions, proud to be Southern.

As a European reader of academic books on the American Civil War, mr. Seabrook makes we wonder about the state of ACW education in American high schools. Is the conflict really presented as oversimplified as 'Honest Abe vs. the Evil Empire of Slavery" ? If so, many of the "falsehoods" are worth bringing to the attention of the general public in an easy-to-digest format.

- Lincoln's suspension of the habeas corpus , the relocation plan to Liberia and his very moderate stance on abolitionism are lesser-known aspects of what a Belgian biographer deemed "a political genius". This sobriquet cuts in both positive and negative ways.
- The material devastation caused by a war primarily fought on Confederate soil is a universal consequence of invasion that shouldn't be disregarded for any war.
- Racism was not the prerogative of the South. It still is not. The primary motivation of the Blue soldier - insofar as he gave thought to the 'why we fight' dimension of the wider war - was to preserve the Union. (See Glory back in '89 - this 2012 book comes a bit late with that particular factoid)
- With slavery on a plantation level limited to the upper 5% of the Southern population, the boys in Grey were equally unmotivated to fight 'a rich man's war' (hint: ALL wars are) and many upon capture declared "I's fighting 'cause you's down here"
- Fun with facts: nothing like a debate over the nomenclature "Civil War / War between the States" to remind us that there's two sides to every conflict, while history is written by the victor.

That being said, revisionism seldom manages not to overstate is case and Confederate writers are no exception. Especially the "truths" about the benign reality of slavery are suspect.
- Whipping was exceptional ?
- Slaves given their freedom stayed on out of affection and loyalty ?
- most 'slaves' were more akin to indentured servants, with relatively wide legal rights ?
- these realities explain why the mass flock north as intended by the Emancipation Proclamation never materialised... Hold on !

The virulent attack on PC history taught as part of a "liberal-socialist conspiracy" equally overshoots its mark. By the time I made it past the introduction I knew this was going to be a bumpy ride. This book would be shown the door to Dixie if it did not have some obscure facts to offer.

I am undecided on the extent of the black contribution to the Confederate war effort. Apart from the "occassional darkie [scuttler] with a cart of oysters" and the officers' servants, mainstram ACW history only mentions a few black units mustered in Richmond at the very end of the war that never saw combat.

This book is pure propaganda, utterly divorced from reality. It should be shelved under fiction and reads like a parody of debunked "lost cause" narratives. If you found this book "mind opening" then you were played. A completely useless book that can only set back the scholarship on the era. If you read this book, you know far less about the Civil War than before you started.

Here are some of the most absurd points this book claims to make. These are taken directly from the publishers website:

• Jefferson Davis adopted a black boy and freed Southern slaves before the North did
• true slavery was never practiced in the South
• Lincoln started the Civil War, not the South
• the South fought to uphold the original Constitution, not to maintain slavery
• it would have cost ten times less to free the slaves and reimburse their owners than fight the War
• the Northern armies were racially segregated, the Southern armies were racially integrated
• after emancipation 95 percent of all blacks voluntarily remained in the South
• between 300,000 and 1 million African-Americans fought for the Confederacy
• Europe would have supported the South but she was scared off by Lincoln’s war threats
• the original Ku Klux Klan was an anti-Yankee organization with thousands of black members

Now, I'm not going to bother taking these all on because they are absurd on their face, but lets look at what I think is the most absurd: "Between 300,000 and 1 million African-Americans" fought for the confederacy is a common theme in the lost cause narrative and has been totally debunked again and again. Also, how can this seem like a convincing argument when there is a 700,000 person margin of error? If there were 1 million blacks fighting in southern armies don't you think that would be a prominent aspect of the stories and images of the war? It's estimated that maybe 1 Million served in confederate armies total. So were they all black? Or were there supposedly twice as many soldiers as that and 50% of them were black? It's utter bullshit and it takes 10 seconds of critical thinking to blow it wide open, you don't even have to know anything about the subject. So no, southern armies were not "racially segregated" either.

The author of this book is either a lunatic or a propagandist. I suspect both.

Born and raised a Yankee, this book was a mind-opener. To be honest, I was ready for another point of view and Lochlainn Seabrook delivered, full-throttle, no holds barred, with conviction. I had previous inklings of a different truth while watching the PBS series, "The Abolitionists," which made obvious that Abraham Lincoln was not the emancipator he has since been hailed.

The historical truth of his reluctance came out when Speilberg's film, Lincoln, was released. So many of the historians and scholars I admire were lamenting and refuting the premise of that film that I had to take a second look at our 16th president.

Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner! lifts a dark veil obscuring this period of our history and reveals a tragedy that is being perpetuated on our country with relentless energy. We can never be healed without facing the absolute facts of this tragic and criminal event.

If you intend to make the so-called 'Civil War' the background for your novel, please don't perpetuate the tissue of lies and call it history.

I recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in studying American history.

I think the book could of been a wee bit shorter, often there was repetitive information. Other than that, it does not take away from the information therein. It was nearer to the truth than the pushed narrative which by design is meant to cause contention. We must never forget it was the white man who gave up 100,000's of lives for the price of ending slavery.

The facts were great and well documented. The attitude was very bitter and angry. The man needs to acknowledge the truth about what he wrote, but get in on with his life. Coming to Christ would be a good beginning.

5 Stars pending primary source verification and secondary source review, but much of this I already know to be true from my own research, so I am inclined to believe the parts I am unlearned about.

With all the propaganda and misinformation from the Left, failed public school teachings, and BLM activists, this is the perfect read on the FACTS of the Civil War.

I think that there is a lot of good information in this book, but it must be approached with an open mind and caution. I don’t agree with a lot of the assertions by the author and more research is definitely needed to determine if some of the data is correct. However, there is enough information that is correct, and in contrast to the National Narrative of the United States, that the curious, and those who value the Constitution, should read it,
