Outgoing Chocolat and shy Vanilla were best friends before they came to the Human World. But the competition to see who will be the next Queen of the Magical World has ended their friendship. Worse, Vanilla has embraced the Dark Magic of the Ogres and is now an enemy of all witches.
While trying to coax Vanilla out of her deep enchanted slumber and take her away from the Ogres, Chocolat discovers something about herself. She’s a Filtre–one who has the power to change sickened, black noir hearts to white! Meanwhile, Chocolat’s crush–the Ogre prince Pierre–has infiltrated her school. What is his plan? Chocolat wants to believe that deep down Pierre means well–but how can she?
Moyoko Anno (安野 モヨコ) is a Japanese manga artist and a fashion writer, with numerous books published in both categories. Her manga and books have attained considerable popularity among young women in Japan. Though she primarily writes manga of the josei demographic, her most popular series, Sugar Sugar Rune, (serialized in Nakayoshi) is targeted at primary school-aged girls. In a recent Oricon poll, she was voted the number eight most popular manga artist among females and thirteen in the general category. Her manga Happy Mania was made into a television series in 1998, followed by Hataraki Man in October 2007. Sakuran was made into a movie in 2006. In the movie Japan Sinks, she has a cameo role alongside her husband; their characters were also married. The movie was directed by Shinji Higuchi, who, like her husband Hideaki Anno, is a co-founder of Gainax.
Anno won the 29th Kodansha Manga Award for children's manga in 2005 for Sugar Sugar Rune.
A LOT happens in this volume, so, without giving anything away, let me just say that maybe about three things (minimum) that readers have been waiting for to happen have finally happened!
I really enjoyed reading this volume and thought the bonus chapter at the end was really cute!
This Volume Contains Chapters 29 - 33 + Bonus Chapter Rune 29.) The Magic of Friendship that Shines in the Sky at Night Rune 30.) Vanilla's Two Hearts Rune 31.) Chocolat is a Filtre Rune 32.) Alchimie's Evil Trick Rune 33.) Introducing Sylvia, The Witch of Light! Special Bonus: Christmas Gifts in the Magical World
I particularly liked this volume (the best?) among the eight volumes of Sugar Sugar Rune. The characterization of Vanilla and Chocolat was stellar, and the reader finally gets a better sense of what Chocolat sees in her adversary/love interest Pierre. The art in this volume was lovely and I sped through every panel as if I the story was animated.
Totalmente in fissa!

A bit of a disappointment: things feel a little all over the place to me. Teleporting to the Oscars ceremony? That came out of nowhere!
The manga started with ogres deciding to create a table reserved for the elite in the school cafeteria, only for Chocola and Vanilla to later go through a deep introspection with the help of a movie star who turns out to be a Light Witch we had never seen before… These story elements aren’t bad in themselves, but they follow one another quite quickly.
I also feel that Vanilla and Chocola reconcile a bit too fast, without any real discussion.
That said, the introspective parts are still very interesting, especially when we discover the burden Vanilla carries from having a mother who is the Queen of the Magical Kingdom. It explains her emotional emptiness and lack of self-confidence. This kind of psychological depth in the characters is one of the series’ real strengths.
All in all, the art remains as beautiful as ever, with stunning settings, outfits, and magical details, but the plot feels a little lost along the way. A shame!
Gah!!! There is so much I liked about this volume!!! But mostly, YAY I'M SO HAPPY I also loved the very end... I totally said "awww" at the last page outloud. I also loved Vanilla's outfit in the Christmas special at the end! So cute!!
EEEK!!! Two volumes left!! I can't wait to find out how this all ties up and ends!!
