bell hooks is foundational reading for feminist theory. When viewed through the lens of a "primer" for the non-feminist, I can see the book's value. I found some sections repetitive, but the structure of the book is like a textbook, and I could see why the repetition needed to be there.
For myself, the book is only 4 stars because I am not the core audience. The repetition described above was necessary, but I personally found it grating. There were passages I highlighted because they explained ideas I have struggled to articulate when speaking with laymen.
Reading this book helped me crystallize ideas I felt but couldn't speak. It is a helpful and necessary book, but readers need to approach it with an understanding of its purpose.
