Tyndale Old Testament Commentary

Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah

Rate this book
Nahum's prophecy of Nineveh's coming destruction. Habakkuk's probing dialogue with the Lord of Israel. Zephaniah's warning to Jerusalem's last great king. The texts of these minor but important prophets receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this introduction and commentary. David W. Baker considers each book's historical setting, composition, structure and authorship as well as important themes and issues. Each book is then expounded passage by passage in the concise and informative style that has become the hallmark of the Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series

As are most volumes in the Tyndale series, this book is informative without being overwhelmingly technical. Devotional reflection is also not absent from these three commentaries (as it was from Cundall's work on Judges), which made it a helpful companion for quiet times of Scripture reading.

Unrelated to the content of the book itself, my particular copy is attributed to Derek Kidner on its spine. It wasn't until I checked the publication information to search for the volume on goodreads here that I realized the commentary I'd just read was not, in fact, written by Kidner. So that was odd.

Solid introductory commentary that was readable and useful. I have struggled with some of the Tyndale Commentaries on the prophets that really became word by word studies and dove deep into running arguments with other commentaries. Here the introductions are simple and to the point about who, when, where and why. The commentaries were readable and useful especially on Habakkuk where the Scripture seemed rather confusing to a modern reader.

I used this one when I preached through Habakkuk and Zephaniah. It provides some good depth without getting overly technical in a short volume. It won't address every issue in the text, but it will give more insight than the average "devotional" commentary. Every entry I have read in this commentary series has been helpful.

Good commentary for its size. The author lists numerous cross-references that slow reading unless you skip them, but otherwise this is a fine little commentary. The analysis is sound and the author lists a variety of alternate readings and interpretations other than the ones he chooses.

A decent commentary for these three Minor Prophets. I enjoyed the commentary on Habakkuk the most, while I found Nahum to be somewhat lacking. Overall it is terse, though has moments of elucidation that I found enlightening. Worth having on the shelf. This is the first of the Tynsdale OT Commentary Series I have read, it has definitely encouraged me to look at others in the series.

From my home state of Ohio, Baker represents well. Typical of the Tyndale series, this volume is brief, but strong. Homiletically helpful. I read this in preparation for an upcoming sermon series in Zephaniah.

Great commentary exploring these three, not so minor, prophets. Layperson level and great introduction to these three books.
