Eating the Lord

Rate this book
From beginning to end, the Bible speaks of eating the Lord. When God created man, He placed man in front of Himself as the tree of life, and rather than commanding man concerning praise or worship, He commanded man to eat. The Old Testament speaks further concerning the matter of eating in its presentation of the types of the Passover lamb, the offerings in the tabernacle, and the produce of the good land of Canaan. The New Testament also speaks very clearly concerning our eating, especially in its presentation of Christ as the portion of all the believers. In Eating the Lord Witness Lee unveils the great scriptural truth that eating the Lord is simply to enjoy the Lord so that God can impart Himself into man to fulfill His heart’s desire. When we believed in the gospel, a great feast was spread before us, and day by day we can keep this feast by cooperating with the Lord’s inward operation. In this way Christ will be an abundant portion for our enjoyment and for those with whom we share Him.

Witness Lee (李常受, pinyin Lǐ Chángshòu) was a Chinese Christian preacher associated with the Local Churches movement and the founder of Living Stream Ministry. He was born in the city of Yantai, Shandong Province, China, in 1905, to a Southern Baptist family. He became a Christian in 1925 after hearing the preaching of Peace Wang and later became a close coworker of Watchman Nee. Witness Lee moved to Taiwan in 1949 as the Communists were advancing in mainland China. During the 1950s, his ministry extended throughout Southeast Asia and in 1962 Lee moved to the United States, relocating the base of his ministry to Southern California. He gave his last public conference in February 1997 at the age of 91. Many of Lee's spoken messages have been published in over 400 books and translated into more than fourteen different languages. Lee's major work is Life-study of the Bible, comprising over 25,000 pages of commentary on every book of the Bible from the perspective of the believers' enjoyment and experience of God's divine life in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Lee was also the chief editor of a new translation of the Bible entitled the Recovery Version.

I thought I had grasped the concept of eating the Lord early in my college years. I believed that to eat the Lord consisted of eating (pray-reading) the Word and calling on the Lord. And that alone. However, once again, my concepts tend to be shattered and this time, regarding eating the Lord.

Eating the Lord by Witness Lee has brought me into a deeper realization and experience in regards to eating the Lord. Yes, eating the Lord consists of calling on the Lord and eating the Word. However, it is much more than that as revealed in this book. Witness Lee examines the need for Christians to enter into the good land to eat the Lord in a deeper and richer way. Not only should we experience the daily heavenly manna in the wilderness, but also experience the Lord as food in the land of Canaan.

A truly eye-opening book. Highly recommended.

A challenging book, written in a simple style but with deep insight, if a little mystical. It follows the theme of eating through the Bible, and starts in that sense feeling almost bland, but he develops this into a deep theological reflection on what it means to commune with God and rely on Him.

This is a quick and easy, yet provoking book. In simple form and language, it challenges the religious concepts that sneak into our hearts and shape our view of the Lord. “Eating the Lord” may be far different and far more vital to an intimate relationship with Him than we previously realized. I definitely recommend this book to anyone in all stages of their walk of faith.
