Not Everything Brainless is Dead

Rate this book
When Captain Rescue's city is overrun by man-eating zombies, he and his arch nemesis must band together to thwart mankind's undealiest threat!

The adventure begins after Dr. Malevolent knocks off the most prominent bank in the city. The super villain gets far more than she bargained for, and over the course of the ensuing shenanigans, zombies are inadvertently unleashed. The outbreak spreads like crazy, and arch enemies embark on a journey to discover who, in this universe or the next, would commit such a dastardly act.

Will Captain Rescue and Dr. Malevolent find a way to put a stop to this apocalypse, or will the undead eat them alive?

"Not Everything Brainless is Dead" is the hilarious entry to Captain Rescue's absurd misadventures, and the first book of a series that is meant to feel like a novelized comic book. A second adventure, "Past, Future, & Present Danger", is also available.

Josh Price is an independent writer and the mastermind behind Captain Rescue, a series of ongoing (and quite humorous) superhero adventures. In these wonderful works of literature, Captain Rescue fights to save the world from a multitude of evil forces, from his nemesis, Dr. Malevolent, to hordes of flesh eating zombies.

The man behind this absurdity grew up in Texas, but now spends his days in Missouri, where he has no real life friends (but oodles of internet ones) and hardly leaves the house. In his spare time, which he has an awful lot of, he writes, plays video games, listens to music, and hangs around the house naked. In that order.

Cut to scene one: The evil Dr. Malevolent is out to rob The Bank and only Captain Rescue can stop her. Well, kind of. Hilarious antics ensue as Dr. Malevolent is taken down. However, this is not your usual Hero vs. Evil Villain type of story. Once the evil master mind is taken down, the true fun begins. As a curious police officer (and not so bright I may add) drinks a vial of unexplained green liquid, he becomes the first zombie of the zombie apocalypse. There you have it folks, Heroes vs. Zombies! What can be better? In this tale, good and evil join up to rid the world of man eating zombies. Meet the team: Dr. Malevolent (an evil genius), Boris (evil sidekick by day, giant blue bunny on nights and weekends), Captain Rescue (our dimwitted super hero), Freight (a policeman known for his violent behavior), and Stubbs (a zombie that not only talks, but doesn’t crave human flesh). This team comes up against the unexpected as they come up against not only zombies, but a T-Rex, a genie in a lamp, and even Bigfoot. This list doesn’t even scratch the surface of the things our team of misfits encounters on their way to save the world. Not to mention it’s littered with references from books, movies, and other pop culture. It almost becomes a game of spot the reference as you read through the story.

Joshua Price is an artist with words as he paints a picture in your mind of each and every scene in the book. As you read, it’s as if a movie is playing just behind your eyes as you visualize each movement the characters make on their way to saving the world. I’ve never read a book before where I can picture absolutely everything so vividly. I applaud the originality in the tale, as well as Price’s ability to bring so many fictional creatures and crazy antics into a story without making it feel jumbled and thrown together. I really love the use of lackeys in this book. We all know that lackeys are in the movies to die, so why not use them in the book too? Every time the team is in trouble they kill a lackey. The lackey may be thrown in front of a hero to keep a zombie away or forced to test the floor for booby traps. There are a million and one ways to kill a lackey and Price attempts to make it through quite a few.

My only complaint about this book is that there seemed to be quite a few grammatical errors, repeated words, and various typos throughout the story. I would be in the middle of reading some grand moment of death and heroism when my mind would begin to stumble over poorly formatted words. Grammar aside, I loved every moment of this book and hope Price writes more about our team of misfits.

My Rating: I’d read it over and over and over again.

From Lilac Wolf and Stuff
Great cover, but I don't remember any zombies coming out of the ground. The first part of the book is pure wackiness as Captain Rescue dashes in to save the day when Dr. Malevolent decides to rob the Bank...yes The Bank...biggest bank in town...actually from the way it sounded the ONLY bank in town.

Captain Rescue is a complete idiot...like Batman without the brains...or stacked body. Dr. Malevolent can't believe who she has to work with. It takes nothing to put him in their truck and head off. But even a broken clock is right twice a day, and somehow he gets lucky when the truck crashes at the police station.

No one is super smart, or strong, or even coordinated. Everyone is normal. Dr. Malevolent's father was killed when she was a little girl, and in her mind it was a big faceless corporation that took him out (ignoring the fact that he was a street vendor and probably just hit by a car). And Captain Rescue's parents were killed by dolphins, he swore to protect people from the dangerous mammal and grew up to meet this goal only to discover that they are actually quite docile. LOL And his cave? Under a urinal cake factory.

So the police confiscate all the evidence and Dr. Malevolent and her crew are put in jail. The guys inventorying the bank goods were not any better. One of them actually drank a dangerous green liquid, and yes that's what started the zombie apocalypse. I about died when Captain Rescue realized what was going on and unlocked the jail cell, shut the door behind him and then threw the keys outside the cell. Actually thought Dr. Malevolent was going to kill him.

So they band together, along with a psycho police officer named Freight and a talking zombie they nick-named Stubs (ok that was Captain Rescue) to save the world. Dr. Malevolent realizes that there has to be a world in order to take it over.

This book really tickled me. It was absurd, farcical, down to earth, and occasionally realistic (when that was an absurd concept). You will never find a zombie apocalypse this hilarious! And you know Dr. Malevolent has a large group of lackeys to take on death for the rest of the heroes - once Freight even throws one through a door to make sure it's not a trap - LOL.

This novel was humorous and kept the reader in stitches. When an evil genius, an overweight superhero, and a determined cop are mixed together the result can only be hysterical. The cop is in love with his gun, the "Dr. Evil" is really just a woman who thinksthat the lab coat complimented her spandex, and her henchman is an 8-foot tall plush blue bunny with a "magic pouch". The reader will soon be introduced to Stubbs, a newly turned zombie who thinks nothing of his current predicament. The story is hysterical and takes the reader to meat a minotaur on a pogo stick, dragons, dinosaurs, etc... The only negative comment I have about the book is that I found many grammatical and spelling errors that made it choppy and hard to read in places. I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy humor with a side of zombie.

JOSHUA PRICE'S "NOT EVERYTHING BRAINLESS IS DEAD" (REVIEW)

A fantastic story of Captain Rescue and his rival Dr. Malevolent! This story is unique and extremely humorous and you can just see the story unfold with the way Joshua Price writes! I found myself laughing out loud at some of the antics. It starts with Captain Rescue being captured by Dr. Malevolent after trying unsuccessfully to foil her plans to rob a bank. Eventually they find themselves working together to rid their world of zombies!

If you're a fan of slap-stick humor and a comic book type-setting turned novel you'll love this book!

This book has many components that drew me in: superhero, swarms of undead, weird, bizarre happenings and a twisted dose of humor. A few scenes that really stuck out for me: . A few things that pulled me out of the story: pacing slow in parts, humor very hit and miss (some chuckles, some groans), the ending wasn't climactic enough.

Overall, a curious effort that has an almost Mad Magazine feel at times. I sort of wished there were comics to go along with parts of the book. The author could be onto something here and glad to see he's not making this a one and done effort.

The story begins with riotous, kitschy humor but at times becomes repetitious and a little dull. But keep reading...you will laugh out loud! There is a great cast of characters and inventiveness and the plot never stagnates. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Silliness ensues as heroic yet idiotic Cap't Rescue tried to vanquish arch nemesis Dr Malevolent. If you just want someting silly to read then this book is for you. It is well written and sometimes laugh out loud funny. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

I think males would like this book. lots of zombies, blood and guts, blowing up things. The title really fits in. Captain Rescue is a super hero not very bright at all. Dr. Malevolent is master crimanal that leads to blowing bank apart. after her gang is caught in local police jail. A cop tastes a strange green liquid and turns into a zombie and little bit later all the cops are either dead or zombies. lots of blood and gore are all over. Captain Rescue, Dr. Malevolent and gang plus a big cop team up to rescue everyone. more zombis, bigfoots, genies and dolphins all mixed in and none too smart. lots of characters who I wouldnt want to meet.

This book by Joshua Price is an absurd misadventure of Captain Rescue. It is titled tht way and the read is exactly that way. It is so absurd that it is comedic which is what is aimed for in the book. Sometimes it is a stretch but it will keep you interested throughout.
