How to Read Foucault's Discipline and Punish

Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish is one of the best-selling works of critical theory and a key text on many undergraduate courses. However, it is a long, difficult text which makes Anne Schwan and Stephen Shapiro's excellent step-by-step reading guide a welcome addition to the How to Read Theory series. Undergraduates across a wide range of disciplines are expected to have a solid understanding of Foucault's key terms, which have become commonplace in critical thinking today. While there are many texts that survey Foucault's thought, these are often more general overviews or biographical précis that give little in the way of robust explanation and discussion. In contrast, How to Read Foucault's Discipline and Punish takes a plain-speaking, yet detailed, approach, specifically designed to give students a thorough understanding of one of the most influential texts in contemporary cultural theory.

-يقدم فوكو في كتابه (المراقبة والمعاقبة) تاريخا للتغيرات في القوانين والعقوبات الجنائية لاستكشاف سبب انتقال المجتمع الغربي من عقوبة التعذيب الجسدي الى عقوبة أكثر إنسانية للمسجون. ويقول بأننا لم نتوقف عن تعذيب الناس لأننا أصبحنا أكثر استنارة واحتراما للحقوق الفردية، بل على العكس يجادل بأن قوانين أو مدونات العدالة تمثل وتجسد دائما السلطة الاجتماعية. الفرق بين المجتمع القديم والمجتمع الحديث أن العقاب(الجسدي) في أواخر القرن 18 كان يعبر عن المصالح المهيمنة على المجتمع حيث كان من المفترض أن يتمتع الملك بسلطة مطلقة، بينما يتم تطبيق العقوبة في المجتمع الحديث بشكل مختلف (نظام السجون) لأن المجتمع الحديث بورجوازي، يسيطر عليه الطبقة الوسطى، ولهذه الطبقة أجندات /أفكار تختلف عن الملكية.
-من أهم الأفكار في الكتاب هو رفض فوكو لفكرة (المعرفة الموضوعية) المنفصلة عن علاقات القوة حيث يرى أن أشكال المعرفة الحديثة وأشكال القوة الحديثة متشابكة أحدهما يعمل كشرط للأخر، ويتحدى أيضا فكرة وجود ذات أصلية تعد ملاذا من عالم السياسة والسوق، حيث يرى أن اختراع الذات فخ، مجال محفوف بعلاقات القوة
- يرفض فوكو فكرة أن العقلانية العلمية والتنوير الإنساني يقفان خارج السلطة
- يرى فوكو أن السلطة ليست حالة يسطر فيها طرف على الأخر، بل هي نتيجة متنقلة تبعا للعلاقات الاستراتيجية.

A brilliant book for people who find it hard to read original works of complex philosophers/thinkers such as Michel Foucault. The book makes it a simple and easy read, breaking down two of Foucault's most important concepts to the field - Discipline and Punish.

As someone who doesn't have much of a background with philosophy, I often find it a bit intimidating to dive into some of the main thinkers and get the right interpretation of their work. I had to read Discipline and Punish (along with other Foucault texts) for a legal theory class, and this book was the best accompaniment to the D&P. I read it before reading D&P and I feel that it gave me an adequate context and explanation of Foucault's work and the society that he was addressing at the time. The authors give the proper background that Foucault takes for granted that the reader knows, and they also point out common misinterpretations of certain parts of D&P. I will definitely be looking into more books from this series for other philosophers I plan to read in the future.
Not to mention that it's really interesting and a quick read!

Very readable, and filled with useful insights. The only caveat I can give is that Schwan's reading of Foucault is closer to Marxism than most scholars', which, while not all that problematic in relation to Discipline and Punish, runs against a lot of Foucault's later thought.

感觉不如直接读原著，福柯很明显的忽略了“社会主义国家”之中的规训，虽然列宁很喜欢美国的泰勒制，并据此可以归因为“社会主义规训的本质还是资本主义规训”，但规训在一个社会主义国家里如何以不同于资本主义的方式运作？尤其福柯所论述的一系列理性的、科学的、经济的规训方式，也许更类似苏联的秘密警察，但绝对会被chairman mao称之为“白专路线”和“苏修路线”，毕竟中国的“中心化+去中心化”的“毛主席领导下的群众路线”既要上曾对下层的规训，也要群众的互相规训，互相凝视。
