I really enjoyed this book! I should have been reading my book club book, but I found this one hard to put down. Fast-paced and suspenseful, with a strong heroine and a rather charming Hitchcock-type hero (like Cary Grant in North by Northwest): the "regular guy" who unexpectedly finds himself thrown into an adventure or intrigue.

I note that it's the third book in a series, although I hadn't read the first two and didn't feel lost at all.

True Shot, Trudeau Sisters #3, by Joyce Lamb
Grade: B

“If it hadn’t been for the pallor of her face and the stark whiteness of the bandage at her shoulder, his brain would have gone right to sex, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars, do not stop until the world ends in bright, explosive colors.”

Mac Hunter needed a vacation according to Charlie and Alex Trudeau, sisters and two of his closest friends which is how he finds himself in their family cabin just outside of D.C.. A a journalist at their father’s newspaper in Lake Avalon, Florida and the sole guardian of his little sister, Mac is in need of some relaxation and a break from drinking. He never expected to find Samantha Trudeau, the long lost sister who ran away fourteen years ago, shot and running from spies in the bathroom of the cabin.

Samantha Trudeau left home fourteen years ago and made the biggest mistake of her life. Every day she goes to work for the FBI as a spy to try and make up for that mistake. When she stumbles across a horrible government secret she goes rouge and the only person who can help is the sexy journalist mac Hunter. Together they must uncover the truth about Samantha and who is out to get her before they take down the family she has spent years protecting.

Let me start by saying that I am not a huge fan of suspense romance especially when a main character has amnesia but this book is a major exception. I found myself lost in the story and I couldn’t put it down until I had finished the entire book in one sitting. I loved the way the characters and the story were written and Mrs. Lamb has made a fan out of me.

This is the third book in this series about three sisters with psychic abilities and I loved that I could jump right into this series and not feel lost at all. Samantha and her sisters all have some major family issues but Sam is the only one who ran away from home and stayed away the entire time. As we learn more about the events around Sam during her teenage years my heart just broke for her. She never got annoying or whiny about the cards she was dealt in life, instead she did what she had to do and what she thought would keep her family safe.

I liked Mac a lot but I had an issue with his previous relationship with Sam’s sister Charlie. Maybe if I had read the previous books I would feel different but for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way and made me feel like he just wanted a Trudeau sister and didn’t care which one. I also had a hard time believing he would let himself get caught up in running from government spies when he had his sister to take care of. Mac was the one part of this book that bothered me and is why I liked it instead of loved it.

I really enjoyed this book and plan on going back and reading the rest of the series. I hope that there are more books involving these sisters and that the series continues.

True Shot is a romance and suspense/thriller with some dark themes. Certain elements of the plot (what Sam’s boss is trying to do to her) and her boss himself are a bit on the florid and overly eevil side. It’s clever, but feels over the top. I’m sorry I’m being vague, but since Lamb strings that revelation out a bit I feel I shouldn’t give it away in the review.

Sam and Mac make a nice pairing. In particular I love the way Mac gets a little too snarky when he gets scared. It isn’t shown as him having unlikely composure in the face of adversity–it’s something he does to cope with being afraid. He felt like more of a point-of-view character than Sam, which is unusual; it was easier to relate to him than to Sam the super-spy.

There’s some nice action and definite suspense (particularly early on as Sam and Mac try to elude their pursuers). There’s danger and some sexually dark material. The relationship is fun, and there’s some very nice sex. Overall it’s an enjoyable book with good characters.

I have have contradictory feeling on this one. I loved the hero, Mac, from the minute we meet him. He has a great streak of common sense and plus natural intelligence and the ability to place other people's needs before his own and he is actually rather modest -in short a very refreshing change from the standard alpha males of Rom Susp. More important I loved how his delightful is essential to Sam being able to recover from all the nastiness she has been entrapped in for the last 14 years. I like Sam fine too, she is fallible and reasonably likable and capable and vulnerable and it works well with Mac. But I really got tired of her passing out, refusing to eat, enduring gunshot wounds, headaches, flashbacks, near rapes, and the climactic scene and what "Dr. Evil" was going to do to her - well it was just too much for me as a reader. But you can see it's a pretty exciting story! Just not going to be one of my favorites I guess,

True Shot wraps up the True Trilogy with Sam, the sister of Charlie and Alex. She has used her empathic ability as an agent for the government, but her boss has been using her for experiments in creating empathic soldiers. Sam accidentally meets up with Mac, Charlie's former lover, and finds love for herself. The story was interesting and tied up some loose ends in this series, but not nearly enough. Many issues from this story as well as previous stories in this trilogy were never address or addressed insufficiently. Another book was in order, but its's too bad we didn't get it.

I felt like there was something missing in this book. The relationship between Sam and Mac didn't seem to be really fleshed out to me and the pacing was a little slow all things considered. The temporary memory loss seemed more annoying than anything although I suppose it was placed to show some of Sam's vulnerability. I just felt like it all could have been better paced and a little more fleshed out in terms of the relationship/interaction between the hero and heroine.

True Shot is the third book in a trilogy about three sisters. I have not read the first two books, but I don’t feel I was lacking any critical knowledge by jumping right in to this one. I, however, do plan to go back and read Charlie and Alex’s stories after getting little glimpses or their struggles.

Sam is BAD ASS!

Another of those nice, predictable easy reads. Girl stumbles into guy, guy helps save her life, they fall in love and manage to beat the bad guy with the help of her sisters and their partners that the first two books in this trilogy were about. Sorry if I spoilt it for you....

I'd read more by this author, it was competently written but seemed a bit
juvenile in spots.

A great premis but I thought the pacing wa a tad slow for the genre. Given all the action that was going on - I'd have liked it more fast paced.

The first book I've read from this author. I think it just wasn't for me.

I liked the characters, but I just couldn't get into the plot.

I'd give the predictable premise an "ew," the tidy ending a "gross," and the 2D filler in the middle a "wtf's the point?"

Worst in the trilogy but not the Worst Thing.
