As you can see, a Dubliner all my life. My parents owned a grocery shop in the Iveagh Markets, in the Liberties area of the city and I guess city blood runs through my veins.

As a child I enjoyed reading and telling stories and everyone thought that I end up in a job which had something to do with books and literature. But though I applied for a job in the library all of the job offers I got were in commerce.

I turned down lots of them before my mother accepted one for me (I was on holiday at the time). It was in the Central Bank of Ireland and that’s how my career in financial services began.

I started out in administration and then moved jobs until finally I was working as a dealer in a commercial bank. Eventually I was promoted to Chief Dealer (the first female CD in the country). I traded lots of different things – foreign exchange, swaps, options, bonds…all of the kind of things you read about in the papers and that sound very technical and difficult. Of course once you’re doing it, it’s not half as technical as it sounds.

But I still loved reading and writing (which I did in my spare time) and I desperately wanted to write my own book. I guess I never quite got over the fact that I was never offered the library job! In my thirties I decided that it was now or never and I sat down, stuck Chapter 1 on a page, and started. I wrote the whole thing before sending it off.

I was offered a publishing deal (with no advance) by an Irish company but only if I wrote a different book! So back to the drawing board, I started again. It was another two years before it was published. It wasn’t until I’d written a few books and was offered a contract (this time with an advance!) from another publisher that I felt able to give up my trading job and write full time. So, even though it took a long time, I eventually realised my dream of being a full-time writer.

And now I also write a business column for the Irish Times.

When I’m writing a book I want to do three things:

* Tell a good story
* Make the reader feel like they know the characters
* Make each book better than the last

I don’t write for any particular audience but I suppose I must have people like me in mind – people who have busy lives and who like to escape into someone else’s for a while.

I love writing books. I hope you enjoy reading them.

I like to read a Christmassy, heart warming story in the run up to Christmas, it just helps me to get in the mood. I like to just get all cosy and settle down with the twinkly lights on and read a festive book, I don't normally mind which one.

A Season to Remember appealed to me as it is a collection of stories with a running theme. The theme is that it is set at Christmas (obviously) and that the people involved in the stories are all staying in the Sugar Loaf Lodge.

I have to say that I both enjoyed this book and also didn't enjoy it. I know that sounds a bit on the odd side but let me explain. I loved that the way it is written is all snuggly and cosy and makes you want to block out the rest of the world and just get nestled into the book. For me that certainly filled the brief and the objective. That is exactly what I wanted to do and exactly what I got! It was a nice and pleasant read. You didn't have to think too hard about it at all which was just perfect, you could concentrate on just enjoying the story. Thing is I found some of the stories a little disappointing. Some of them were just a bit too short and I was left wanting a bit more. I also got a little fed up in some ways of waiting for the book to 'get going'. I was constantly waiting for the climax. Maybe I shouldn't have thought like that, maybe I should have just taken it as it was and just gone with the flow. I think I have read one too many 'dramatic books' with lots of action that I was just waiting for the crunch point whereas I should have just enjoyed it for the story that it was maybe?

All in all though I did enjoy it for the snuggly read that it was!

3.5 stars.

I have never read books by Sheila O'Flanagan before. Thus finding this book at The Big Bad Wolf is quite a steal for me to try this author's writings.

I am loving it.

This book is a compilation of short stories and somehow connected to the central premise, The Sugar Loaf Lodge, a beautiful lodge located in Ireland.

This book celebrates life, relationship, ancestry and most of all, love.

But this is love in all senses. Love between families, friends, lovers. This book is quite a treasure. And I do love the short stories inside.

I do love the ghost story the most.

Som en mysig Netflixfilm - så ljuvlig! Kärlek, värme, jul och mirakel - men också smärta, ensamhet och tårar. Älskade den!

Sheila O’Flanagan is a Chick Lit staple, having released 16 novels and two short story collections. So when her third short story collection, A Season To Remember, was released last year I was eager to read it although it’s taken me a while to actually read the novel. Because of its short story nature, I managed to read it over a few weeks, one story at a time, finally finishing it up just recently. Now I must admit, I’ve never reviewed a short story novel before. And I have no idea how I’m meant to do it. (I know, I’m rubbish, right?)

All of the short stories featured in A Season To Remember have one thing in common: They all take place at the Sugar Loaf Lodge, a luxurious hotel in Ireland. Which, by the way, sounds like one of the most magical and enjoyable hotels, ever. Each of the people we meet are at the Sugar Loaf for various reasons over the festive period – meeting their lovers, escaping familial duties, splurging out, or in the case of the Sugar Loaf Lodge’s owners, just trying to keep your hotel running in the midst of an economical crisis.

There’s a bit of something for everyone in the novel and there are stories I preferred over others for sure, whereas some just plain felt unfinished. That’s the trouble with short stories – they can seem unfinished and that’s definitely the case with the recurring characters from O’Flanagan’s earlier novel Anyone But Him, featuring Jin, Cora and Andie. They make an appearance in another of O’Flanagan’s short story collections (Destinations, if I remember correctly) and they’re back again in A Season To Remember, but it’s not really necessary. I mean, nothing happens during their little story, nothing that could further their previous story, it’s as if they’re there for the sake of it than any real reason. For me, that was the most disappointing short story but thankfully that’s the only disappointing one.

There are about 10 different stories in the book, and one that touched me in particular was the one about Louisa. You’ll have to read it to know about it and although it’s not necessarily a straight-forward tale, it’s one of my favourites. In fact, I’d have loved for it to have been even longer! Overall, I found A Season To Remember to be a quick, warm read. I’m not necessarily sure how memorable it was, but there are one or two stories that will stick with me, and I definitely think O’Flanagan could expand the Sugar Loaf Lodge hotel into a bigger novel if the need ever arised. Though with a proper plot I mean, not numerous short stories! O’Flanagan is an accomplished short story writer (and I do think it’s harder than it may seem to write a short story!) and this is another nice collection.

This book is not Sheila O’Flanagan’s usual offerings and is more like a collection of short stories all brought together. This book opens at The Sugar Loaf Lodge and we meet the owners Neil and Claire. They are suffering in the economic crisis and are worried that at the beginning of December they still have many rooms available. Thankfully they appear to have a Guardian Angel and surprisingly all of their rooms are eventually booked.

The Sugar Loaf Lodge has a number of rooms and each room is named after a mountain, and so too is each chapter. Each room and chapter tells us a different story about its occupants and how they ended up at the Lodge for Christmas.

We meet some really interesting characters and it’s surprising just how much we learn about each of them and their situation. That’s not to say that each person has a happy ending but it definitely gives you an insight.

I have personally found myself wondering what various people are doing and how they came to be at a certain place. Although normally in my situation it is when I am killing time in an airport and trying to work out who is flying where and who is married to who. This is what in one respect drew me to the book. Usually I am not over keen on short stories but this seemed so different.

The book focuses on the place but then integrates everybody’s story and take on the situation. The characters were also fantastic and were an eclectic mix of people which kept it interesting. We meet a young girl who is heartbroken and trying to move on, a young coupled looking for peace and quiet, and a family group as well as others. The family group that appeared in this story were actually the family that appeared in Sheila O’Flanagan’s book ‘Anyone but Him’.

Although not a hefty book like hers usually are, this was still a decent size read at 320 pages. The title indicates along with the timing of publication that this was a Christmas themed book. I must be honest and say that this was a wonderfully light and easy read for any time of year. Sheila O’Flanagan has still produced a great book with her absorbing style of writing that fans like me love.

There is no predictability to this book as there is no real depth to the linking of characters and we only see short snippets of their life, but in my opinion this is what stands this book apart a little bit. It was very refreshing to read something where you don’t wait for the linking of characters to come together and you are just finding out about each characters life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think it would make a lovely present at this time of year!

This book wasn't what I expected at all....but in a good way.

We find ourselves at Sugar Loaf Lodge, a luxurious getaway set in the rolling hillside of County Wicklow, Ireland. Run by owners Claire and Neil.
They are determined to make this Christmas the best ever...

Who keeps leaving helpful notes on the 'bloody computer' and is Claire's voice of reason. Who is whispering Merry Christmas to visitors...

A Season to Remember is a mix of short stories from different families who are dealing with various family matters from divorce, affairs to Lotto winnings, but they all have one mission in mind...a happy, peaceful and stressful Christmas. This is where the Sugar Loaf Lodge comes into its own.

Will Hollys Christmas romance go smoothly....
Will Bridget be able to forgive Andrew...
Does Andie find happiness at Christmas...
Does Grace have all that she ever wanted....
Will Jim, Laura and baby Kirstie have a peaceful Christmas...
Does Alex really make plans...
What is Michelle's secret....
Will Patrick always be uncle Scrooge....

Then we have Louisa, will she find what she's been searching all these years....

I really enjoyed the short stories and how all the character's worked and were gently interwoven through the story.
It's a true heart warming read, and I'm sure that most of us can relate to son do destroy, I know I certainly can.

If you want a "feel good" easy, cosy read, this is a book to choose. I was attracted immediately by the setting of a luxury hotel preparing for Christmas. Each chapter focuses on a guest or group of guests and relates their story and how they came to the hotel, so very reminiscent of Maeve Binchy's style of writing. It kept me interested to the end, with inevitably some chapters/guests having more appeal than others. I was particularly struck by the story of Jim and Laura, stressed out with their mothers competing over who was to host the first Christmas of their new baby granddaughter. Ghost stories usually leave me cold, but the story of Louisa was very touching. Very enjoyable.

A low three stars for me. It was well written, the characters appealed and it past a pleasant hour or two. The only thing that stopped this being a full three stars for me was that I felt some of the stories were a touch short: I wanted to know more and felt a bit unsatisfied after I had finished. I also think this is definitely a Christmas book - perhaps I would have enjoyed it more in the run up to Christmas, rather than the middle of January.

This book is so endearing, uplifting, comforting and festive. I love how every chapter focuses on different families and highlights the difference between everyone's lives. I especially love the chapter about the little girl who was finally seen. Very heartwarming book and lovely to read over christmas.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the fact it was set in a hotel over Christmas. I loved that we got the story of each of the folks who'd booked a stay, room by room. Gentle humour and nicely observed insight. Particularly loved Louisa.

I've read a couple of these type of books by this author before.
The short inter-connected stories are something you can just dip into, and not necessarily have to concentrate on too much.
All in all a good read.

'A Season to Remember' is not the type of book I would normally read. It just looks at relationships, and usually I like a little more story. I don't know where this book came from or why I had it, but I found it among my books while I was looking for something else. I had been reading some heavy books lately, in subject and in the time it took me to finish, and I thought this would be OK to read as something light, silly and festive.

The book follows Neil and Claire, the owners of luxury hotel the Sugar Loaf Lodge. It sounded wonderful - I'd definitely want to go somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Ireland, with a spa, under-floor heating in the bathrooms and a sunken bath, massive beds with lots of plush pillows, and presents, chocolates and cards from the owners. The Lodge has a wonderful reputation of knowing exactly what the guests want before they thought to ask - maybe the room is too cold, they want more chocolates, or might like an extra blanket.

The story takes place at Christmas - Christmas Eve until Boxing Day (26th) - and each chapter follows the guests in different parties and shows why they ended up coming to the Sugar Loaf Lodge for Christmas. Each story is quite different. I suppose it is more like a collection of short stories than a novel, with all the guests being present in each other's perspectives, adding to the tapestry of "other guests". There were characters like the divorced man whose wife had an affair, the four widows, and the young family who want to get away from arguing parents, all with their own reasons for wanting to get away from it all for Christmas. There is even a chapter about the ghostly presence at the Lodge. At the end, we circle back around to the owners to bookend the stories.

I suppose the book did give me a cosy sense of the warmth and happiness we all wish for at Christmas. The Lodge provided free hot chocolate and somewhere to toast marshmallows. It was all perfect. The book was a total cliché, really, with predictable and convenient outcomes, but it was all harmless, everybody lived happily ever after, and it was something fluffy and light to read before embarking on a more serious book. It was sweet, but I can't really give it more than three stars when there was not much substance to the story, only warm-hearted vignettes.

So many characters! I wonder how the writer was not confused! Had a hard time remembering all of them.
I like reading about the different lives of all the characters though. It's like reading many books at the same time. It's not as cozy as it is described unfortunately, it's just that the setting is in Christmas time. Nothing particularly which is good, just a normal story.
Even the family relationships which supposed to be touching didnt bring me to tears. Clearly did not meet my expectation.
But still, I've always admired people who can write books , and being who is not blessed with that ability, I guess that's as far as I can go with the criticism.
It's the second book I've read by this author, probably won't try anymore. Although the stories can be said original and interesting enough, the writing style doesn't lead to the emotions readers are expecting.

I was so looking forward to reading this but it was just disappointing. It was more like a book of short stories than a novel. I liked the first two chapters where we learned about the people running the Sugar Loaf Lodge and a woman hoping to spend Christmas with her married lover but after that each chapter was about the life of a different family but the stories never really came together. I wanted to read about Christmas not adultery, redundancy and death. The little girl ghost helping to run the hotel was the last straw. Close to DNF but forced myself to finish it.
