This informal, user-friendly book is intended to provide a journey for author and reader along some of the less-traveled roads of counseling. This book offers insight into some overlooked aspects of counseling, from subtle considerations of initial client contact to the preservation of the counselor's own vitality in a demanding profession. Topics covered in this journey attention to the powerful aspects of the language we choose to use; the elements of teaching that are integral to counseling; ethical and moral issues of concern; and potential pitfalls of a profession that draws from the essence of the counselor. For practicing psychologists and counselors.
I did not find this book to be insightful or helpful. I feel the author too often presents personal opinion as fact and contradicts herself on the very advice she gives to counselors. The author claims she resents other people telling her how to live her life, yet she has no problems telling other people this is what you should do if you are a counselor.
The author does point out that if you do not agree with her assessment of what a counselor should and shouldn't be then this book will not be for you, she is honest on that point. You might find something useful in this book, I did not.
This is a quick and easy read. It breaks down the counseling process into a very simple understable format. Of course, you still need to read all the other more detailed books to gain the deeper knowledge of all the concepts and theories. However, this one is a great review after you have been through all the training and you just want a quick refresher on the basics.
