Sydney Laine Allan is the alter-ego of erotic romance author Tawny Taylor. Like Tawny’s books, Sydney’s stories are sexy, and sassilicious. The only difference-- Tawny’s characters get to play in dungeons.
But that doesn’t mean they get to have all the fun...
Did this book have potential? Yes. Did it achieve ANY of its postential? No.
Hailey owns an animal rescue agency in California. She ran away from her life in Michigan until it caught up w/ her in the form of Rainer Hartmann, a hunky doctor who hunts her down from Detroit to tell her terrible news: her estranged twin has leukemia. Hartmann needs her to donate blood marrow for a stem cell transplant.
Is there enough animal-rescue plotline? Is a dog pivotal to the plot? Is the writing bearable? No. No. No. The one thing I will give the book is that the sex scenes are HOT (all of two of them). I read that the author wrote this under a pen name, and writes white-sexy-hot romance novels under her real name. So... this explains the hot sex, w/o being too graphic, which is good.
All ends well, of course. Once again, if an e-book is recommended FOR FREE -- you get what you pay for. What a way to end 2019.
Jerky writing style. Faster than realistic timeline, mmm is pushy and manipulative but its all ok for the fmc. Semi ok backstory. It is an ok fast story but also just kind of ick for lack of better words.
This story has all the right elements, the right formula -- all the right ingredients, the right recipe. But the chemistry won't ignite and the final product falls flat. Lots of interesting back story to the characters, and somehow they still feel flat - I can't figure out why. I found myself reading along for something to do, but my mind wandered and I even skipped one of the steamy scenes -- it just felt like silly words on the page because I was too distant from the characters. I was often removed from the story by the author's portrayal of the characters thoughts, like when Reiner would see Hailey and the narration read, "How she made him want her!" I couldn't get into that out-dated and almost formal narration. Unfortunately, even after nearly quitting twice, I did eventually stop reading 3/4's of the way through this book, when even the mystery of her sister's survival and the possibility of the twins switching lives couldn't keep my interest piqued. That said, I do recognize all the pivotal requirements for a great love story, and I can't put my finger on what's missing... And all this leads me to believe that this author is very, very close to success. It's like the author is trying to get it right, and even though it so clearly flops, I can't quite instruct her on what magical elements are lacking. While this book is definitely not a keeper for me, I would be interested in a later book by this author. Maybe practice will make perfect in her case! (and I agree with previous reviews: a better editor would have greatly helped my desire to stay with the characters instead of getting distracted by omitted words and missing quotation marks)
Personally, I felt the book had potential but failed to deliver. It was a cute story, but nothing about it was memorable. The plot was very weak and at times I questioned what the point was. The pace was fairly average too. But I think that was due to the tangents that the characters went off on. It seemed rambly with useless information.
The characters were okay but, again, not very memorable. And there were 2 I really had a problem with… namely Hailey's mother and sister. I hated those two with a passion, and Hailey's constant drive to seek their approval was frustrating and annoying. There were times I wanted to throw the book. I also didn't buy into Hailey and Rainers (wth kind of name is that?) relationship. It was very contrived.
Overall though, despite some issues I had, this was cute enough and engaging enough for me to enjoy. But I'm happy it's over. The ending was too sweet though, how everything works out perfectly but there's a huge disconnect when it comes to the 'how' it came to that conclusion. I recommend it to someone who is very bored and comes into this story with low expectations and nothing else to read. While it was okay enough, I wouldn't read this one again.
I wanted to like Rescue Me by Sydney Laine Allen, but I ended up really disliking the book. The author made out that Hailey had done something incredibly wrong, something that was unforgivable and that just wasn’t the case. The only thing Hailey was guilty of was being an immature idiot who ran away when she was unhappy with her life. She was immature and just when it seemed like she was starting to figure things out and mature a little she would regress to the point of irritation.
I found that the book description of Rainer was perfect “a man who mistakes overbearing control for helping.” He was so overbearing and controlling that he was unlikable. Through the whole book, I couldn’t understand why Hailey or her sister Heidi liked him, let alone why they would fall in love with him.
As for Heidi, she was supposed to be the character you commiserated with because Hailey betrayed her, and she was fighting cancer. I found her depth of anger toward her sister misplaced and off putting.
Overall, I really disliked the book and thought it was a waste of time reading it.

This story idea was a good one but for me I'm not sure the dialog and story between Hailey & Rainer worked. I can understand the part of him fighting his attraction to Hailey but something was missing. I finished the book and would probably try reading another book by Sydney Laine Allan.

This book was only 99 cents so I feel a little guilty giving it such a negative review; but it is just that bad. The dialog is very old fashioned, the female character actually calls a kitchen appliance a "do hickey" and refers to a male co-worker as a real doll. I felt like I was reading the script from a cheesy 40's movie. We are dealing with identical twins, and yet people say things like: "you look so familiar". I don't think familiar is the right word, I think the word is identical. Our female lead also gets falling down drunk after two glasses of wine and the result is a hangover that lasts 24 hours. She totally shaves her 2 foot long hair off and no one seems to notice, except one comment from our handsome lead..."Oh you cut your hair" Seriously? I do have to say the one perfect thing is the title. I can't count how many times I was reciting it as I struggled through this book.
I liked the main character. She was flawed and had an imperfect relationship with her family. All of that was very well done, as was her connection with Rainer. But sometimes I found the characters a bit hard to pinpoint, they shifted around too much. The sisters were supposed to be twins yet they had different hair colours? Did I read that correctly? I also know they were trying to release themselves from particular 'emotional patterns' and heal. But I just couldn't feel completely clear on it, on the path they were taking. It lacked some consistency. And there were some odd contradictions, like Rainer saying he had a negative impression of her based on what her sister told him and then later saying he didn't have any details on what happened between the sisters, because the sister wouldn't talk about it...so how he got that negative impression he mentioned?
I was really looking forward to this book, but I can't lie it disappointed me. There were good parts and very touching parts, but there were also slow parts and some parts that just didn't keep my attention. I absolutely LOVE dogs so I was thrilled with Hailey being an animal lover and having a rescue. In general Hailey's character bugged me quite a bit. Like anyone Hailey has some issues, major issues actually and the way that she handled them and let them manifest into other issues and shape her life really bugged me. In the end thanks to Rainer she faced the issues head on and made some changes.
Rainer seems like a really sweet guy with a great heart, but at the same time he's a bit weird and I just didn't love him. Overall, it's a decent book. The storyline was really good, but it just didn't hold my interest very well.
I should love this book. It's got an animal rescuer heroine with a sexy doctor as the hero. There is a twin which complicates the storyline, but I didn't like it nearly as much as I felt like I could have. I liked the heorine but the hero annoyed me and we all know the true weight of a romance story lies on the hero's shoulders. He was too perfect, in an unbelievable way. His character flaw being that he cares too much about people. Really? That's a flaw? Maybe it could be, the author made references to other women feeling like he meddles too much but somehow that's not near the tortured soul character flaws that the most memorable heros have.
I finished it, because I do love a HEA but I'll be honest and say that this story is not likely to remain in the memory bank for too long. Even the HEA felt too contrived.

I can't do half stars in the rating section, but I'd put this at 2.5. It was an okay story, but seemed a bit rushed. I liked the idea behind it, just wished it were more fleshed out. I wanted the animal rescue aspect of Hailey's life to have a bigger presence in the story. Also, her twin, after harboring such horrible feelings for SO long, just suddenly has a change of heart....why? Just didn't mesh all that well.
On a side-note (but definitely related!) I'm finding as I read more and more Kindle-only fiction, that what I've said above is often the case. The plots have merit, a good idea going in, but just doesn't get fleshed out enough to be satisfying. Not sure if I'm the only one feeling this way, but so far, my experiences lead me to this opinion!

I saw this book on the Kindle Store for free and so I thought I would give it a try. I thought that this was a rather cute/sweet story, when I read what the story would be about I thought that I would really enjoy the book but sadly I was left disappointed :/ it wasn't the sort of book that I will remember, the characters aren't very memorable either. The story is well written, some of the dialog between the characters didn't really work or flow very well.
Nice idea of a story of love and forgiveness. Some words did not fit in context and beginning quotes were missing in places. I really wish I didn't feel like I was hanging at the end. Not a bad story but had many issues. Could have been better.
I quite liked this one, the story was a good one in theory and one that I'd not read before! I didn't find myself engaging with the characters as much as I can do and for me that's why I didn't rate it as highly as I could have done!
2.5 Stars I kept thinking it would get better, but it just kind of plodded along. The story had so much more potential to it. The author should submit it for a Lifetime movie of the week. It would make a good one.
Ahhh... nothing throws a kink into a perfectly good plan like family. This is a great drama about growing up and learning that people really can change. And that Love can find you when you least expect it.
As many others have said about this book, it had all the right elements but was missing something. I didn't connect with the characters and I read swiftly through the romance. It did nothing for me. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Really this was just a poorly written book. The plot was jumbled and the dialogue was stilted. That being said, I think it could have been saved with the help of a good editor.
Very cute book, and a very quick read. It was hard to put down, and brought me back to the days when I was a pre-teen reading Sweet Valley High, although this is an adult version. Really enjoyed it!
This was a great book. The characters were great. It was a light read and many different emotions came to mind. Some of the characters I could relate. Great read.
