With fourteen fingers, blue hair, and a name that sounds like a sneeze, Mrs Kachunka's no ordinary school dinner lady. She has a strange eyeglass that makes her slitted eye seem to grow and grow, putting people's minds in a spin - even the headmaster's. And what does she mean by 'Everything'? Mrs Harries does NOT approve. Theodora thinks she's great, but Thomas won't have anything to do with her. Mrs Kachunka, however, is a being with a mission, and no one is going to put her off, not even mean Mr Buckley.
This is definitely a book I'll be buying for my granddaughter when she gets a bit older. Enid Richemont is one of those authors who know what young readers like. This is a delightful tale of a school dinner lady with an unusual appearance, a sense of humour, a deep feeling for justice and a magical ability to help people get things in perspective. Children (and their parents) will love Mrs Kachunka, whose name sounds like a sneeze.
The writing is engagingly rhythmical and the story bounds along with not a word wasted. Kachunka! - this one's a hit with me.
