A native Virginian, Sara sold her first published romance novel, FLASH OF DARK, an urban fantasy romance pitting vampires against the Fae, in 2009. Since that fateful day, she's published over 20 books in various sub-genres of romance, been generously honored with several awards, and saved the world from evil chocolate chip cookies.

Though she may insist otherwise, Sara loves the places her mind conjures and has always been fascinated by the strange, the unusual, the twisted and the lost (tortured heroes are her personal favorite). She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this geekiness, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story.

Heat Rating: Flame - Needed to find toys while reading.

Tired of dealing with bad guys? Tired of always being the one in control? Selene is a tough Planetary Deputy Chief Marshall. She deals with criminals every day. She needs to decompress and the only way she knows how is to frequent a BDSM club, Tawse. She keeps searching for that Dom who can make her fly into sub space. She’s not a painslut nor is she extremely submissive. She’s looking for a Dom who can top her.

Since this is obviously a fantasy story with sci-fi elements, I chose to ignore the bar serving alcohol to those just about to play. I don’t expect fiction authors to teach people the facts of BDSM clubs, but the alcohol mixed with a scene is a pet peeve of mine. As in, I don’t allow it. I digress. The club is upscale and could be considered a GlitterKink category since it’s obvious only the rich can afford membership to this club.

What holds me back from the GlitterKink category is the exquisite play between Vaughn and Selene. Selene finally meets her match with Vaughn. She cannot top from below with Vaughn. He’s an experienced Dom who puts her through her paces. He does a bit of mind fucking to keep her from seizing control. This one scene they played in this very short story was hot. It had me aroused and ready to play. I particularly liked the nipple clamps attached in a way I’ve never read or seen. I’m wondering if it is possible and want to try it in real life. The scene isn’t heavy into pain or filled with complicated toys. Instead, it’s a strong D/s play which clearly demonstrates who is in charge. Wowza, I want to submit to Vaughn. Still, as far as BDSM stories go, I would consider this light. This is a great book for new to BDSM readers who want a bit more than just handcuffs, a slap and a tickle.

This is the second BDSM story I've read from Sara Brookes and I plan to read many more. Not only does she explain the BDSM lifestyle throughout the story, but she also develops the characters extremely well. There was never a moment of info dump. It all worked together and made for a great, HOT read. I can't wait until the next Sypricon Masters story is released.

a very short story that drops you in to a moment in the life of Selene as she makes a visit to a frequent haunt of hers and pines for Master Vaughn, rightly so. I only wish this were a full length story because it definitely left me wanting more.....Please!?!

Impulse Control is a very short sci-fi erotica novella of merely 28 pages, the first in Sara Brookes' Masters of Sypricon series. The story starts off with an in medias res beginning: we jump right in the middle, no introduction, no gently easing into the story, the first scene is already taking place at the fetish club. Selene is a Deputy Chief Marshal and due to the very dominant aspect of her job she is in need of relinquising control and being the one put into submission for once. She couldn't think of a more ideal candidate for the post than Vaughn, a highly coveted Dom of the club and a man Selene has had her eye for some time now.

Vaughn takes over the reins and wants to show Selene how to be a submissive, but his strategic education executed in various steps made the seduction fractured to me and disconnected me from the emotional, sensual side of the scene.

Of course due to the length limitations there wasn't much time for character development. Vaughn repeats several times how Selene is always opposed to having her boundaries stretched but we don't see any proof or example of that.

Verdict: Impulse Control is a story more about control and dominance than erotism and sex. And though the ending came around a bit unexpected and rushed, Impulse Control was a short novella I enjoyed. Sara Brookes introduces an interesting new world and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

Impulse Control is the first book in Brookes’ Sypricon Masters Series. It’s short and serves as an introduction to the sci-fi series but leaves you just wishing there was more. Brookes grabs readers with one of the best first lines I’ve ever seen: “Today was the cherry on top of a shitty week sundae”; and then moves you quickly through a BDSM exchange worth reading. Overall, it was a good read. For my full review, go to www.theromancereviews.com/rpoma72.

3 1/2 stars for HOT D/s story telling and a delicious Dom. Vaughn is pure yum. I don't have a problem with the shortness of the story, stories come in all lengths, but in the abruptness of the ending. I don't know what I expected for the end but would have liked a bit more. Won't stop me from reading the next in the series, however.
