Full Wolf Moon: Book I of the Full Wolf Moon Trilogy

Rate this book
Fans of social thrillers like Jordan Peele's "Get Out" will want to sink their teeth into the award winning Full Wolf Moon Trilogy, a relevant supernatural social thriller in werewolf's clothing. Beginning during the era of the U.S. panic that followed Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Full Wolf Moon wraps a suspenseful tale of historical terror around a contemporary warning about history repeating itself. In our present, unsettled times of travel bans and violence against minorities on the rise, Full Wolf Moon's story is disturbingly relevant today. This supernatural social thriller's beginning is grounded in an era when over 120,000 Japanese Nationals and their American born children were trapped in the barbed wire confines of internment camps right on U.S soil, forced to live out the duration of the war in uncertainty and fear. It begins at Tulenar Japanese Internment Camp, 1942: In the wake of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, no one believes a greater evil stalks Japanese Nationals and their American born children than what they are already suffering. Forced from their homes along the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada, placed into internment camps until the end of the war, no one believes a werewolf is behind the grisly deaths plaguing the residents of the camp. Not Captain Maxwell Pierce, nor politico Doris Tebbe. Only Navajo healer David Alma Curar believes. And he has his own reasons for following the beast's bloody trail to Tulenar. Tampa Bay Magazine praises K.L. Nappier's "Full Wolf Moon Trilogy" as "exciting" and "otherworldly." Sharp Writ Books calls Full Wolf Book I "fast paced," and "both believable and fantastical." Geekdom of Gore says "K.L. Nappier takes the werewolf genre and spins it within a historical event," "makes it suspenseful and entertaining," and "[kept] me hooked."

Can The Beast Within Be Tamed?

Full Wolf Moon is a supernatural thriller by K. L. Nappier. As both an author and avid reader, I was immediately struck by the vibrant descriptions that assaulted my senses, bringing the opening scene into high definition, the details drawing me into the tale so quickly I was hopelessly hooked before I finished the Prologue.

Ms. Nappier, by her own admission, loves to explore the human experience, to test the strength of our compassion, our endurance, our willingness to rise above our prejudices. In Full Wolf Moon, Doris Tebbe, Maxwell Pierce, and David Alma Curar are caught up in one of the worst times in our history: the internment of Japanese-Americans and Japanese Nationals living in the United States in 1942. Tebbe and Pierce are at odds from the beginning because Tebbe is the civilian administrator of Tulenar Internment Camp in eastern California, and does not believe the internment policy is necessary. Pierce, on the other hand, is military, the CO of Lakeside Post Assembly Center and believes that it is unfortunate, but indeed necessary. Alma Curar, a man of Spanish descent, is among the vendors serving the internees, but his mission is far removed from that of a vegetable farmer selling his wares.

As the number of bizarre deaths increase, speculation is rampant. All sorts of scenarios are being considered, most of which are aimed at the Japanese internees. However, the truth is much more dangerous, and it will take the coming together of these three diverse cultures and personalities to stop the carnage.

Full Wolf Moon is Book I in The Full Moon Trilogy, a fact I was thrilled to discover! Bitten is Book II. Chosen, Book III, is coming out in the fall of 2012. If the others are as enjoyable as the first, it’s a series in which it’s worth investing your time and money.

First paragraph:
Prologue

Navajo Reservation, Northern Arizona
March, 1942
First Night. Full Moon.

The beast crested the lip of the plateau, the sands of the desert like sharded bone, blanched under moonlight. One mile away the lights of Long Walk glittered, the scents of the settlement dilute at this distance but sorted easily inside an unnatural muzzle, over broad tongue, through scythe-like fangs.

I'm so very glad I picked up this book, looking for something a little bit different from my usual reading tastes. "Full Wolf Moon" is an engaging werewolf horror tale set around a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Doris is the female civilian camp supervisor, the 'Iron Lady' who operates in a man's world, and must put together the pieces of a murder mystery before more innocents die.

Very smart book. I'm ready for part two.

Set during WWII in a Japanese internment camp on the western US coast, this story focuses on several grisly murders. The responsibility to solve the problem and bring the killer to justice falls directly on Doris Tebbe, the Center Administrator, and Captain Maxwell Pierce in command of the local Army detachment. The appearance of a Dineh (Navajo) healer, David Alma Curar adds to the mystery.
Through twists and turns of the story, it becomes apparent that the killer isn’t human, but a werewolf. Time is running out, and they must stop the ravening supernatural beast before it chooses a new host.
The characters are excellent, and the plotting overall is good. There are several minor issues with the book, but I don’t let that stand in the way of an enjoyable story:
-- The pacing starts off slow, but builds up in intensity.
-- There are several typos.
-- The book can benefit from reformatting since there are strange widow / orphan gaps at odd places and the entire text should be justified.
All in all, Full Wolf Moon is a good read. Enjoy!

For me, the book started out a tad bit slow, but after about 10-12% it picked up, gained momentum, and then the next thing I knew, I was holding on for dear life! The characters in this book touch you; they make you feel their pain, their fear, their hunger…If I had to pick one favorite character, I could not do it! From Doris-who always has to show control and never let her real emotions show to Max- who I went from dislike at the beginning of the book to compassion by the end; the characters will work their way under your skin and so will the situations they find themselves in.

Just to let other potential readers know-this is not one of those “Twilight” feel-good books where the werewolves start out as Indian Gods with bulging muscles and Adonis faces who turn into wolves that fight the bad guys and help save the day. In K.L’s story, the werewolves are the creatures of old that should be feared, not slept with! K.L.’s werewolves are the type that cause panic-induced praying, as the characters who encounter them know that their lives are about to end…painfully.

I also liked the “tension within tension” that Nappier created in her work. There are the problems that come from the Tulenar Internment camp and the anger that the reader feels about that whole situation; there is much tension between characters in the book that had me yelling one second and close to tears the next, and then the fear of the wolf itself and wondering what it will do next. This book brings about so many types of emotions and, to me, that is one of the signs of an awesome read and a talented author!

I don’t want to write too much as I will eventually give something away and I want everyone to GET THIS BOOK! You will not regret it! I give it 5-stars (more if I could!) and I have already downloaded the second book in this trilogy, “Bitten”.

**I received a copy of this book for an honest review**

Taking place in an internment camp during WWII in California, The story follows the camp director, a Native American healer, and an Army officer as they search for and survive a menacing threat stalking and killing residents at the camp.

Full Wolf Moon is the first of a trilogy. Overall the book makes for a suspenseful read full of twists, engaging characters, and exhilarating action. The author also throws in some romance which is not done in a heavy handed fashion and adds to the characters involved. There is also a good dose of blood and gore, but again it's not over done so those weak of stomach should still feel quiet at home with this read.

The only complaint I have with the book, is the fact that I encountered several typographical errors. I haven't seen these mentioned in other reviews so it could be a printing error; so these will not be factored in my final rating.

K.L. Napier takes the werewolf genre and spins it within a historical event and makes it suspenseful and entertaining. I'm not a history buff by any means and this book still managed to grab me and keep me hooked.

Full Wolf Moon is set in the early 1940s and takes place in and around an internment camp where Japanese Americans were being brought at the start of WWII. This story has mystery, paranormal suspense, and a little romance woven in. Through it all, there is the underlying feel of history and what the time was like for both the people forced into the camps and those running them.

Despite some editing issues, this was a well-written, fast-paced story that kept me involved to the end. I enjoyed the mixture of historical fiction with the paranormal.

I don't generally read horror novels, but this one I found fascinating, both because of the historical perspective and because of the vivid characters. The close look at the Japanese Americans forced to leave their homes and be confined within guarded camps during World War II was eye-opening. The characters were compelling because they were so very believable and realistic in their combination of good and evil traits. The supernatural elements never jarred but rather illuminated the strengths and foibles of human nature that we recognize all too well and with which we can readily identify. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

Full Wolf Moon really stands out among the werewolf books for the way that it's written, the characters and the fast paced plot that had me guessing until the very last page. I loved the unusual setting of World War 2, which added another exciting dimension to the plot. I was over the moon to realise that the story doesn't end with this book - there are 2 more in the trilogy, which I need to read right away!

This was a good story but for me it was a little slow going. Overall I enjoyed the story but there was something that kept me from plowing through this quickly. I am generally not a fan of werewolves. But prejudices aside, I would recommend this book especially if werewolves are your cup of tea.
