Faking Perfection

Rate this book
Father Garth Roderick is a priest with a problem. He’s had a fascination with a particular congregant for years. Though he’s never actually acknowledged his sexuality, Garth’s definitely more attracted to men than women. Fortunately, he hasn’t had to deal with making a moral decision... until the night he is caught in the dark and kissed senseless. Now he fantasizes that the kiss was from the one man he can’t forget, Eli Jennings.

For Garth, the man of his fantasies could be his, but how does he reconcile human desire with his vow to God? And for Eli, coming in second best hurts like hell, but how do you ask a man of God to leave the church and take a chance on love?

I rarely do this but... HOLY SHIZNOLIS WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT COVER?!?!?

 photo heartsforeyes_zps6uulfopa.jpg

The lure of the cover was too much to resist.

The words inside that cover... let's look at that cover again. No, seriously, it wasn't horrid. Some reality suspension is required, but the struggle Garth goes through felt genuine, for the most part.

Garth has known Eli since he was a child. Kinda squicky, I know. Watts tows a fine line between ewwwwwww and awwwwwww. When the attraction began is nebulous, so I chose not to dwell too heavily on it. Suffice to say, Garth's been carrying a torch for Eli. He even had an encounter with a kissing bandit/secret admirer three years ago that he's fantasized was Eli.

Guess what?

It totally was!

Eli's been in love with Garth for years and decides to make his intentions known at his sister's wedding. Some flip fucking went down in the vestibule. Did I think it was weird that a virgin priest was down to flip fuck with a parishioner in the vestibule? Uh, yeah. Not half as weird as his fellow priest walking in on their post-coital bliss then REFUSING TO LEAVE!

 photo oFBmlnq_zpsdhgznn4z.gif

For a minute I thought the other priest was going to join in instead he started to give Garth and Eli the hell fire and brimstone business.

So weird.

The angst and Catholicism politics that ensue read authentic where the disconnect occurred was between the two MCs. There wasn't enough on the page to make me believe in their love; they're not together all that often and when they are they're having sex in semi-public places. It should've been hot; I wanted heat between them and what I got was mostly awkward. My other problem was the continuity errors, some of which were glaring and yanked me right out of the story.

Another problem is I continue to have questions. Why wait three years? It's sort of intimated that Eli lives out of town which has prevented their contact, but he's at the church regularly over the next few weeks? Who takes a few weeks off for their sister's wedding?

Not a bad read, but not memorable one either.

This book had a lot of potential. It tackles quite a number of taboo topics, namely homosexuality and Catholicism, breach of celibate, teacher/ student romance, sex in a church… all this simply calls ANGST! CONFLICT! CHARACTER GROWTH!
Sadly, the story didn’t live up to its promise.

I found the character of Garth well-drawn. He’s a priest who is nevertheless a man with natural urges and needs, and discovering his attraction to Eli pushes him into a sheer agony of inner turmoil, conflict and crisis of faith. Yet, Garth deals with these issues in a halfway realistic way, by going through the classical process of denial, refusal, processing and acceptance. Personally I can’t entirely imagine that such a devoted servant of the Catholic church, particularly at Garth’s stated age and length of service, would reach the point of acceptance that soon and with relatively little self-flagellation and guilt. After all, the principles of sin, guilt and atonement should be deeply ingrained into every Catholic, even more so into a priest. But then again, people are different. I liked Garth, and so I didn’t begrudge him the absolution his sister granted him, thus enabling him to forgive himself.

But I absolutely couldn’t stomach Eli, Garth’s love interest, who was a selfish, manipulative prick most of the times. So he got it into his head that he loved his priest, and of course Garth must love him back, no two ways about it. He’s such an irresistible guy, isn’t he, the church and Garth’s lifelong devotion pale in comparison to being Eli Jennings’s lover. Eli is lucky enough to find his homosexuality widely accepted, so who cares that Garth can’t expect to meet the same acceptance if he came out? Garth doesn’t jump at the occasion right away? Eli catches him out, seduces him and then hauls ass as Father Merrick walks in on them and things go south.
At one time Eli muses if he didn’t come on too strong and might perhaps scare the unexperienced priest away. In my opinion, Eli is a stalker, plain and simple, and I rooted for Garth to realize that and send Eli where the sun doesn’t shine. He didn’t, unfortunately, and the love affair carried on, becoming sweeter and sweeter until it ended in sheer saccharine. Well, perhaps it’s only my teeth that hurt, others might adore the ending. After all, it’s original, and sexy, too.

Ok this book is hot. I mean like Smoking. Not only do you have the taboo issue of a gay priest wanting a parishioner but to have sex in the church. I was reading this at my desk at work on my e-reader hitting the enter button on my computer keyboard trying to turn the damn page. Whew!!!!

This is romantic and sexy and Garth as both a priest and a man is everything you'd want in both. I loved Eli for his tenacity. It's about faith, having it in love and having it in forgiveness.

Hit the spot. I've been having a mini rewatch due to Hollyoaks Favourites of the John Paul/Father Kieron storyline so my gay priest kink needed to be fulfilled!

Sorry but this book kinda squicked me out. A priest getting caught with a dick up his ass in the church vestibule? Um...I'm not even a little religious but ewwww. And wanting someone for years but still feeling so conflicted, I guess since I'm not a church goer maybe I just don't get it. It was more annoying to me than anything. I will say the writing was very good just the story was wrong for me.

Review for Hearts on Fire

At the beginning of the story, Eli’s sister is getting married and Garth is performing the ceremony which brings Eli and Garth together for the first time in three years. Three years prior, Garth had been at Eli’s sister’s graduation and had an encounter in the dark where he is kissed by a mystery man. Although Garth did not see the man, he has fantasized that it was Eli.

Eli confesses to Garth that it was him in that encounter in the dark and that he has been in love with Garth for years and felt compelled to tell him – even if Garth does not feel the same. He realizes that Garth is already “married” to the church. Garth does love Eli but is torn between his vows and his feelings for Eli. An incident occurs after the wedding that is discovered by another priest that forces Garth to take time away from church and Eli to determine his future. Eli, while insisting he doesn’t want to pressure Garth, of course really hopes that Garth will choose to be with him. Garth does his best to reflect on his feelings and his future and finally takes a sabbatical away from everything to gain clarity and perspective.

I thought this story was well written and conveyed the depth of the internal conflict that Garth was experiencing. Garth’s reflections and realizations about his choices in life and what he wants in a future are the focus and strength of the story. For those that might have strong religious feelings about the Catholic priesthood, this might not be the best choice in reading material. This was the first story by Mia Watts that I have read and based on the strength of this story, I look forward to reading more.

OK. I'll admit it. The temptation of a priest is one of my very favorite tropes. It's so forbidden, so angsty. This book ratchets that up another notch by serving up that temptation in the form of another man. And holy wow, was it hot.

Father Garth is a man devoted to his faith. But a stolen kiss in the dark with another man turned his world on its ear three years ago. He never knew who it was that kissed him that night, but in his fantasies, it was Eli, a man from his congregation. He's never allowed himself to really explore his feelings; he's just repressed them over and over.

Of course, the man was, indeed, Eli. And now, he is coming forward with his feelings to Garth, hoping they can have a future. This puts Garth between a rock and a hard place (*snicker*) as he tries to figure out his true feelings about Eli and the church.

When these two get down to business, it is scorching hot. Stomach-clenching, face-flushing, slap-your-mama hot. Hell, even the prologue is hot in this book. There were a few moments where things were a little too heavy-handed, mostly when we got into the rights-and-wrongs of intolerance in the Catholic faith. I understand why it was there, but it was the only part of the book that didn't sing for me.

Faking Perfection has great sexual tension, believable emotional conflict and damn fine sex. (*fans self*) A little more than 4 stars.

Um...well...it's not what I expected actually.
But this is Mia and erotic.
Unlike one particular book about Priest, even I'm still stinking it was too soon to have sex the first day you met someone who kissed you three years ago, and got caught, I'm glad that Garth still have his 'priestly soul' inside his heart.
He's willing to repent for his sin.
But he have to choose between Church and Eli.
We all know how the story end. But I still hope Garth will never leave God for good.
It's a short story, felt a little rush at the ending, and I hope this one was a longer story.

Esa portada deja caer bastante información, así que me esperaba mucho de lo que iba a pasar en la historia. Sin embargo, Garth y Eli me han sorprendido mucho y me han parecido una pareja muy bonita. Esta historia merece la pena ser leída.

5 Intense Stars!!What a lovely way to spend an afternoon... A Priest, who succumbs to desire. When I read the synopsis, It appealed to my more salacious side. I mean who doesn't love when a man gives in!!!! This author is new to me, but it won't be my last read by her. From Page 1 you are pulled in to this intense story, and you won't turn away until the very last word.

Personally, I LOVE stories about Priests who give in to carnal desires, and especially with another man!!! The heat was scorching between Garth and Eli. This author creates all the delicious reactions while reading... best not to read it in public!! haha :) This was a fact-paced, perfect length story. In a matter of a few pages, the author keeps you riveted with her words. You will feel the intensity of passion between the characters, some desperation that will tug at your heart-strings, sympathy for a situation that you wouldn't envy anyone in, and a little heart-pounding.

The side characters were perfect accompaniment. There is some religion mentioned in the story, but it doesn't feel like you are participating in a Sermon. The mentions were perfect for the situation. There is some laugh-out-loud humour as well. All in all, a very well-rounded story. This is a story that I would re-read when I needed to get out of a book funk. Fun and Frisky!!!

I found this to be a really heartfelt and touching story even though at the same time it was hot and sweet. Oddly, I've never seen the attraction to priests, but I connected to the characters and their trials in this book.

Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down, I had to know if the man in the dark was truly the man Garth wanted and if he was.... what then?

I really felt the hard choices that were being deliberated over and the impact they would have on Garth's life.

The story was short and it was perfect that way so that the important, impactful statements weren't hounded upon or drawn out.

As usual, another home run for Mia Watts.

Faking Perfection had a lot of things not going for it. Head hopping – in fact in one section, I almost got a headache because I wasn’t sure if it was from Eli or Garth’s POV and had to re-read three pages over and over before I finally gave up trying to figure it out, boring sex scenes, and information that just seemed left out for some reason.

That said, I liked the book. Garth is a priest in the Catholic church. He’s never consciously thought of his sexuality before, but one stolen kiss three years earlier makes it hard to concentrate on his calling…especially when a man he always imagined as the kisser comes back to town. I wish the anguish was more intense. As much as I’m not a fan of angst, I never got the intense anguish that should have accompanied Garth’s pain as he tried to decide between his job as priest or his feelings for Eli.

Eli, I’m a bit torn about – there isn’t a lot of depth to his character. All we really know is that he loves Garth and even in that, I was never quite sure if he loved the man or just had a fetish for the man of the cloth.

I must admit, I wish it had been longer and there had been more depth for both characters.

This is an erotically laden romance that also deals with faith—a rare combination indeed! I liked this dichotomy of sex and faith but didn’t understand why Eli would have such a visceral love for Father Gareth. I had to just accept Eli’s powerful insta-love for Gareth to enjoy the romantic tension. And wow was the romantic tension dirty! Eli’s brash sexuality hits Gareth and readers for an extremely erotic romance. The only break in the eroticism was Gareth’s meditations on faith and love; this seemed slightly jarring to me, but worked in the context of who Gareth was.

I do, however, have to mention my own squeamishness with how Eli and Gareth meet: Gareth is Eli’s priest since puberty. This doesn’t sit well with me personally as it builds an intimacy that later turns sexual and feels slightly exploitative. I think the author recognizes this danger and has Eli be the aggressor but it still left me a little icked out.

It was good. It was great. Until it wasn't.

The foreplay was really sexy. All that agony and tension and guilt.

But then when it got down to the actual sex, they, like, became different people. Well, Garth did. Eli was kind of the same person as before, in that he was kind of the same flat-ish character from before. (thing that means same thing as "froop-dee-doo" but for some reason that's all I can think of).

Of course, it turns out that somehow, magically, Garth becomes all okay and stuff while Eli is suffering from self-retributional stuff and whatnot.

Yeah, it became stupid.

I mean, the rest of it may be great, but I'm just sitting here feeling supremely cheated. It's not exactly the story it claimed to be, you know. Or maybe it's not the story I thought it was. Either way, I couldn't get through it. YMMV, though.
This time I admit it was probably mostly me.

I thought Eli and Garth were great together. I just about choked when I read the part where another priest walked in on them having sex in the church vestibule! Even though it was a source of angst, I liked how it wasn't an easy decision for Garth to choose between the priesthood and Eli. Garth had a lot of big decisions to make and he definitely thought about things from every angle and didn't take things lightly. I also applauded Eli's courage in confessing his love for Garth in the first place and then his determination in pursuing Garth.

Reviewed by Markie: This book could be described as one man's journey to discover himself, and for Father Garth Roderick, upon meeting Eli Jennings some years later after their 'kiss', it comes down to that alone.

This book kept me turning the pages. I cared about both characters. I wanted everything to turn out good for them. The writing is excellent. Ms. Watts has done a wonderful job with every aspect of this story. It's a story with lots of emotion and if you like this along will well place drama, this book would be well worth your while

As the others books , in Faking perfection the writer description a love story in tenderly and delicato mode since that Garth is a priest and Eli un boy that him ha catechized in the past. But if also the argument is seriously ,in the plot not there's judgment but sincerity and authenticity of feelings...naturally the sex scenes are hot too .

A priest faces the temptation presented by his attraction to a former member of his congregation and winds up questioning his entire relationship to the Church and his right to individual happiness. The religious dilemma presented is here is done especially well. (And the sex is smokin'.)
