This thick, large format coffee table book is a retrospective on artist Berni Wrightson.
It was originally printed in 1978.
I remember back then my father would receive this one book catalog where a cloth bound version of this book sold for $60. It was a book I always wanted and around 1995 I was finally able to purchase a soft-bound edition. Good luck finding a copy for cheap.
Highly recommended for fans of Berni Wrightson and premiere illustrators. This guy was so much more than a mere comic book artist.

As far as I know, my discovery of Berni (or, eventually, "Bernie") Wrightson began back around 1977 when, bored, I shelled out sixty cents for The Original Swamp Thing Saga that reprinted the first two issues of the comic. And, while I loved the story, it was easily Wrightson's art that blew me away. I read it, then I read it again, then I would go back and just stare at the artwork, page by page, panel by panel.
I'd never seen anything like it.
Five years later, I rediscovered him with his collaboration with Stephen King on his CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF.
By then, I was an absolute fan, and anywhere I could find something of his, I grabbed it. I still believe his best work is his illustrations for FRANKENSTEIN.
Interestingly, I had, until a few months ago, been completely unaware of this book, until I discovered it in the library of a friend. This book is mindblowing in so many ways.
First, this is literally only the first ten years of Wrightson's output—so he hadn't even gotten to that Stephen King book yet. And second, as I read this, eight years since he passed away, and something like 47 years since this book was published, it's mind-blowing to know what he accomplished after this.
There's so much of his art here! And what's better, almost all of it has some sort of commentary from him...whether what he was thinking, or why he abandoned it (and some of those are wonderful, even only half completed).
Just a gorgeous book by one of the premier talents of my generation.

Now I need to find out what he's been up to during the last 23 years!
This was one of the better art books I've read recently. Lots of text details and a lot of really nice artwork, presented nicely.

Fantastic book. If you're an illustrator, a fan of comic books or simply like staring and learning about great art, this is the book for you. Bernie Wrightson is the master. It's nice to get inside his head and see what makes him tick as an artist. The cool thing about this book is not only the great art, but the fact that Bernie actually takes the time to talk about his work - including his failures, which makes him a bit more human in my eyes.

My favorite artist. The book reaches into his works and lays them bare for all. If you love comics, horror or even just art please try and get a copy of this gem. I plan on being buried with it!

5* for the glorious Wrightson art on display. 3* rating due to general layout and the writer not missing an opportunity to snipe at his former business partner in the text.
