So you're now a carer. Your elderly parents need you as never before. Nobody's ever trained you for what comes next, yet you re the unofficial project manager.
Emily Ackerman looks at practical and emotional issues like finding time, coping with pressure, the sandwich generation, cutting apron-strings, memory loss and caring from a distance. Underpinning it all is helpful advice from the Bible, for isn't it God who calls us to honour and care for our parents?
The author shares generously and sometimes humorously from her own experience, acting as a wise, sure-footed and sensitive guide. This book will be useful to all who care for elderly relatives.
A very practical book, probably better suited to reading by those who are actually in the position of caring for elderly parents than those, like myself, who like to read these things pre-emptively. I found some of the theological background to the book seemed a little "thin" and broad-brush, but that's probably intentional, as it's such a practical sort of book. Lots of checklists that look like they would be very useful, and a good discussion of the various different sorts of forms that caring for elderly parents may take.
As someone who in the last year has found herself taking on the role of parent-carer, I've found this very helpful - full of practical advice and encouragement. My main takeaway from it so far is the need to strengthen my support network, and I'm sure that as Mum's health deteriorates there will be other useful things I can apply from the book. I only wish I'd read it before now!
