Again, I couldn't find a lengthier biography on Taylor in the library, so this one had to suffice. For being a bio for young readers, it summarized nicely Taylor's life and main accomplishments. I did get a lot more detail of his time in the Mexican American War in my last bio of Polk. I do think it interesting that the American people at this time wanted war heroes for their presidents. The fact that Taylor had never voted before or was associated with any particular party before he was elected president was amusing. He was also an example of someone who was raised and then owned slaves himself but believed that the practice would destroy the country. This seems to be the view of all but a few presidents since the birth of our nation. This bio does a good job of stressing the quickly building tensions of Congress and the nation as a whole over slavery.
