Christopher Allwyne, Duke of Bellwood, stood to inherit a vast fortune. Still reeling from the loss of his parents and most recently, his Aunt Polly, the Duchess of Bellwood, the young noble found himself traveling in the dark of night to oversee Her Grace's funeral proceedings and to attend the reading of his aunt's will. Along the way, his carriage suffers a devastating accident, and a dark stranger comes to his aid and rescue. The Marquis Evan de Lombard, rich French nobleman, takes an instant interest in the handsome Christopher. Sharing a wicked encounter shortly after meeting, things look promising as love blooms between them. That is, until the Marquis reveals his true identity and purpose.
Once Christopher knows the truth, will he ever be able to forgive Evan and love him, despite the man's indiscretions? Torn apart by dishonesty, can love win out over betrayal and rise to the occasion, reuniting them for a lifetime of happiness? The cost for true love could be a price neither one is willing to pay.
I loved this book!! I haven't read a historical for a while and realized just how much I have missed it.
I like that the writer took poetic license and made marriage between the two male characters legal.
The rich characterization of Evan and Christopher made me fall in love with their journey to complete their lives together. I'm a little in awe of Evan, he took control and knew what he wanted from the beginning.
This book had it all for me, adventure, romance, hot sex, family conflicts and the ultimate betrayal. It also left me wanting more of Evan and Christopher and I didn't want the book to end.
I was very curious to read this mm/historical book because the author decided to put aside two very important factors. First, that being homosexual was unthinkable and punished by death and second that a man born out of wedlock could inherit a title. A kind of alternate Georgian time period.
Well in my opinion it was a big mistake ! It led to the most flat and boring story I have ever read. I am not saying that it is badly written, only that it robbed this story of any danger, excitement or interest.
Another major problem is that I didn't feel any true chemistry between the two men, lust for sure, and if you add the fact that they jumped into bed much too early, bad beginning. The story was very predictable from start to finish, no surprises at all.
The character of the Marquis Evan de Lombard was not so bad and rather believable, but Christopher Allwyne, Duke of Bellwood, was spineless, unable to decide anything and I couldn't imagine him, for one minute, working as an attorney. Many times I thought he could have been replaced by a female character; once or twice his reactions and behavior felt simply wrong for a man. The fact that Evan could put a claim to the title despite his birth made the story much too easy.
I really enjoyed the preview I was given of this book. The characters were developed in a way I felt that I really grew to know Christopher and Evan as I read. The storyline flowed well, drawing my emotions from one extreme to the other and back again. There are twists and turns, ranging from an accidental meeting, moving through family background, to romance, hot sex, secrets, and betrayal, among other things, which kept my usually poor attention span glued to this book. If you enjoy beautiful men intertwined in the rules of nobility and the challenges of a blossoming romance, tinged with a secret that can destroy everything, this is a good read to pick up.
I had the opportunity to preview this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story line is sweet, sexy, mysterious, exciting... everything I look for in a good read. I adore the characters and thought they were very well thought out and developed. I thought the premise was very unique and original. It didn't read like an idea that has been written and rewritten, and kept me entertained until the last word. And, did I mention that it's quite sexy? Would absolutely recommend!
I loved this book and how this talented author used fantasy to create a world where it was legal and acceptable for two men to marry. I love historicals anyway and because I read almost strictly M/M, it's very hard to find a regency novel. I thought it was wonderful the way the men fell almost instantly for each other and Ms. Hunt scripted some very hot love scenes. I have become a great fan of this talented author and anxiously await the next installment from her.
(Contains mild spoilers in the paragraph regarding Evan.)
Set in an alternate England of 1792, A Wicked Encounter is the story of Christopher Allwyne, the Duke of Bellwood, and Evan de Lombard, a Frenchman, who has come to claim the same property that Christopher believes he might inherit from his recently deceased aunt.
Evan and Christopher had already encountered each other and things go awry when Christopher finds out why Evan is in the area. It remains to be seen if they can work things out.
Let me start off by saying that I liked the book overall and it provided a nice reading break. While I would have liked to see more character development and a meatier storyline, I really enjoyed the author's descriptiveness and vivid writing.
Having said that, I do have a couple quibbles with the reading.
The first one is that, even though the author has stated in the foreward that the storyline is set in an alternate England and France where same sex marriage is allowed during the late 18th Century, I found myself going, "But, but, but...." during a good portion of the first time I read the story. Part of that reaction may come from my habit of reading the last chapter first before reading the story from the beginning. I actually like having that kind of a reaction during reading because it usually makes me evaluate whether it's just me or whether it is something that the author intended. Another part of the reaction, however, may be that, while the author does state in the foreward that marriage is acceptable between a same sex couple though rare, I would have liked to see some of the history of why and how it came to be accepted within the storyline itself. Was Christopher, as a lawyer, part of the movement that made it so? Or did it come to pass before he was even born? If so, how long before and what event acted as the impetus for the movement?
A second quibble I have with the story is Christopher himself. For someone who is, essentially, billed as the head of the family, he comes across as a bowl of quivering aspic and one that isn't entirely well set either. While Christopher is a member of the ton, and a certain different set of rules may apply (never mind the different era), I have had teachers who are/were practicing lawyers in different disciplines and having different personalities and, to me, they were of a stronger character than Christopher.
Another thing that stood out for me is Evan. Or, rather, his name. First, well, his first name. From what the reader finds out during the course of the story is that his mother (who is assumed to be French as her heritage is not mentioned) is married to a Frenchman and has an affair with an Englishman. It is worked out by all parties that the French couple will raise the son and that his English parentage will not be revealed. Now, it may just be me, but wouldn't a name like Evan raise some sort of flag? Then the last name. To my the best of my knowledge, the "Lombard" portion of the name has Italian connotations. I would have liked to see some sort of backstory to explain the history of the name within the story.
Aside from these and a couple other things that are due more to my own personal quirks, I really did enjoy the story provided in A Wicked Ecnounter though not everyone might.
If a reader is looking for a nice, quick read, then A Wicked Encounter is great.

I loved this book! It was a little bit fantasy, a little bit reality, and a whole lotta hot lovin'!
I felt the real pain of Evan and Christopher as they came together and found the beginnings of love, but were then torn apart by what Christopher deemed as betrayal. I can see it happening in real life. Its easy to meet someone and have that instant connection that leads to falling into bed together. Its happened to me before. The hard part is when we find out something about the other person that doesn't meet with our preconceived expectations and hopes about his or her. It happens all the time in reality.
The thing is, can they find their way through the problems and wade through those challenges to figure out they belong together? And that their love is real enough and strong enough to carry them? I think that was the overall lesson that impassioned my heart while reading this book. That true love can overcome all challenges, and that it draws true, loving hearts back together. We all crave a HEA ending in real life, not just in the books and fantasies we indulge in. This book really delivered that.
On top of which, I enjoyed the depth of emotion created in both main characters. They were both very good men deep down at heart. Also, there was great imagery created, some snarky humor, some very hot and tender love scenes, and the cover art really created a strong image in my head of what the main characters looked like. Mmm, yum! Such hot, sexy boys. I don't know why I love hot boys together as much or more than hetero stories now, but as an adult, I find it less boring and common that traditional romance. For that reason, I loved the twist on this, with just enough fact woven into the fantasy to make it all believable. And yes, the author does explain in the Foreward that she has taken poetic license and created a fantasy alternate universe for her story. I liked that. It was fun and different.
In fact, I wasn't ready for the story to be over when the book ended! That's the sign of a good writer for me, when the story leaves me wanting more. And this book was superbly well written and edited. The writer is a talented person and I would give anything this person writes a try just to see if I like it. Definitely a fun and romantic read. Highly recommended! :)
For me its a one star but I defer to a two star as I'm sure others enjoy this.
Truly a cliche romance, and really a badly executed one. This is love at first sex, seriously they meet have sex and say they love each other in less then 24 hours. Now that's not the only problem of this book, but it's probably he worst of the bunch. Next you are to believe that ,even though they are madly in love, each can draw anger and insult from a misunderstanding. To the point that they leave this new love and move on. You have a chapter of this misunderstanding continuing and than suddenly" poof" sex makes it all better and the end.
It was painful to read. the writing is bad but not terrible. The author has that. pov change from one character to th next with no breaks to help the reader. Usually the mc name will just appear with a thought to let you know.
I was very disappointed in this book. It was not good. It felt more like an outline or sketch of a story than the actual story, the characters were totally not well-drawn, and overall it was not what I'd hoped.
