Grade: A

Highly recommended. Pearson's work is influenced primarily by Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, and this book is an expansion of The Hero Within , written by Pearson 3 years earlier. Sometimes an expansion is superfluous and unnecessary; in this case, the expansion adds depth and practicality. Quite simply, this is the most transformative (and potentially transformative) book I've ever read. Amazingly, this book was written in the early 1990s, but Pearson is so forward-looking--especially in discussion of gender and patriarchy, race, sexuality, and cultural diversity--that it easily could have been written this year (2014). Awakening the Heroes Within is a book I will be returning to again and again in order to glean more wisdom and personal application.

I'm not sure whether it's the "self-help" genre or Depth Psychology, but I find one or the other less and less compelling—at least, personally.

There are certainly some insights to be gained here and the book is an easy-to-access resource for archetypal thinking and the ways in which certain stories we tell ourselves impact our psychology, and ultimately, everything else around us. The prose can be vague and slip into "deepity" territory, but I think it will resonate with or benefit people with certain temperaments.

I push back against its portrayal of the Hero's Journey as a universal trope or the notion that Depth Psychology has an ontological or fundamental reality (this is not to say it doesn't have a nominal reality or impact on people). Also, I find the reification of ego to be similarly off-putting. Still, these 12 archetypes can be a fun way to explore how one orients in the world and open up some insights into richer ways of employing narratives.

If it helps somebody to overcome some existential challenges, then great! If you find it bland or unaffecting, then don't be discouraged; there are plenty of other resources out there for coping with our social and psychological realities.

I found the beginning of this book fairly hard to wade through but about mid-way, I started to get into it. She has a lot of insights into archetypes and made me want to read a lot more Jung. I was particularly intrigued by her sense of the movement from one archetype pattern to another in the course of a lifetime. I'd just skip the intro, if I were you!
I wasn't floored by it - but the little chunks that were insightful were insightful enough that I forgave the more banal stuff. Also, this is really a quibble - but at one point she makes a statement about the Fisher King's wound "always" being in his genitals and everything I've ever read has talked about the wound being in his thigh or his mouth. I know, I know, it's a silly thing to get annoyed by but I'm such a big mythic geek that I simply couldn't let this go! It drove me crazy for a big chunk of the book!
It's good though - not sure it will "transform our world" as the title will suggest but it might just give you some insight into patterns currently operating in your life.

I have not read the entire book, but I have taken part in the exercises found within the book. After doing the exercises and reading the parts of the book that best applied to the results from the exercises I can certainly say that the author has done some impressive work with this book. I have certainly seen the elements of the various Archetypes manifest in my life in profound ways that the results of the exercise said I would have seen. The book also talks about the resolution of conflicts between certain Archetypal Figures operating within ones life as well. The book is certainly worth the read, and I will most likely be returning to this book in the future to complete the parts that would not have necessarily applied to me as directly.

Awakening the Heroes Within by Carol S. Pearson, is a book you return to again and again. It is one you keep on your shelf for reference, because it is THE best guide for the journey within. Expert and authoritative, while lovely and wise, this book offers a template within which to assess the stages of a spiritual quest. It is like having a friend walking beside you, teaching and sharing. Loads of helpful information presented in a beautiful format, Awakening the Heroes Within safely nurtures awareness of one's spiritual path through the symbolism and engagement with the archetypes that guide our way through transformation.

This book is fascinating to me. It's basically Jungian in that it posits twelve archetypes which people/communities/cultures move through in a spiral fashion throughout their lifespans. I love paradigms of this sort; they appeal to the way my mind works.

Apparently, for what it's worth, I am strongest in my Magician archetype, closely followed by Creator, Sage, Ruler and Lover. I could use some work on my Orphan and Destroyer archetypes.

We were only supposed to read about the first four (including Orphan) so I have yet to learn exactly what this means ;-P

This book helped me to understand Dr. June's work better. This is a great vehicle for self discovery, self improvement and insight. The readers can easily understand and recognize the interconnection of archetypes.

CP "The three stages of the hero’s journey—preparation, journey, return—parallel exactly the stages of human psychological development…."
KMW "Not only did these authors’ exemplary work completely change how I view and plot my own stories, it also changed the way I view my life. Recognizing and studying all of these archetypes (and identifying which journey I am personally working on in my own life) has proven to be a profound initiatory experience.
If you have studied character arcs with me before, then you already know the essence of any character arc is change. Archetype, as noted in the quote above, adds the element of changing the reader—or at least, by its very nature, offering the opportunity to do so."

Women’s journeys often differ in style and sometimes in sequence from those of men, but the hero’s journey is essentially the same for both sexes.
More than that, every single one of these arcs is important, in its proper order, for every person, regardless of gender. Generally speaking, the feminine arcs begin in integration and move to individuation, while the masculine arcs begin in individuation and move back to integration. Both are necessary for wholeness and growth, each leading into the next.

Long story short (tsiteerides autorit):

This book was a weird but interesting introduction for me atleast into Jungian psychology. I’m not sure if I got what I was supposed to get from the book but it did help give me insight into some things. My understanding around archetypes and the way they manifest into our lives is still very skewed. I can’t tell if the book try’s to portray the archetypes as actual things or as like metaphors. I think if you look at this book through a lens of trying to avoid the mysticism aspects you can definitely get some helpful pieces of knowledge. For me anyway I think that’s how I read the book. Most of the book focuses on the archetypes themselves and I think because I didn’t really understand them that well the book didn’t really correlate with me. The parts of the book where androgyny and gender in society are explored were interesting to me however and I think they helped me to change my beliefs in these ways. Overall the book is just a good way to rid yourself of ignorance around certain topics. Reading the book with an open mind is definitely necessary and I think I would recommend (:

This book is about 12 archetypes! The first 4 are about ego, second 4 about soul, and the last 4 for self. The author believes that development is not a straight path, and it's spiral path. We start the path with the innocent, and finish our journey with this archetype.
Also, the author mentions that how our lives are affected by age or gender, and how we need all of them, and how to raise all of them in our lives.
It could have been shorter! Sometimes, sentences and contents were just repeated.
At first, I found this book really hard to follow! The first chapters were excruciating! 😬 But then it becomes more and more interesting.

I'm not as much of a fan of Archetypes as I used to be, so that part of the book I just skimmed. It's also an older book and much has been written since then about patriarchal (and white) influence on the process of creating mythologies, but it still does a decent job of encouraging us to look beyond the stereotypes and to find our own mythology. I have 64 highlights on my e-reader, so there was some value to be found for sure.

5/5 - it was amazing

At first I was skeptical and thought this is just another spiritual self-help guide, which I am not very fond of. At the end I found this to be a wonderful examination of the underlying archetypal themes of the universal narrative of the human experience. I also enjoyed the lengthy connection to gender and cultural identity. It is an empowering book.

It's a bit touchy feely and cheesy at times, but overall it was an interesting read. The last few chapters, where she drew it all together were very useful & made me think.
