Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Barbara was traditionally published for many years, then formed her own publishing company FOG CITY PUBLISHING in 2011 and has since sold over 10 million books! She has published 75 novels ranging from mystery thrillers to romantic suspense and contemporary romance.

Her book SUMMER SECRETS was a #1 New York Times bestseller! And twenty-five other novels have also appeared on the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists. She is currently writing two ongoing series, a contemporary romance series set in Whisper Lake and a romantic suspense series: Off The Grid: FBI Series. She is also known for her bestselling Callaway Family Series, which offers up fourteen books and two novellas.

When Barbara isn't writing or publishing, which isn't very often these days, she is playing tennis, hanging out with friends and family in beautiful Lake Tahoe or reading books!

I'm sometimes leery of contemporary romance/chick lit because I feel like characters in many of these novels are self-absorbed and just generally whiny. That's why, when I happen to come across a book like Golden Lies, I breathe a sigh of relief and tuck in for a good read.

The narrative begins with Riley McAllister and his grandmother: Riley takes her to an Antiques Roadshow-like gathering and they discover that the dragon Nan Delaney found in her attic could possibly be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Antiques dealers are suddenly coming out of the woodwork, and Riley is put in the position of trying to protect his beloved grandmother's interests.

One of those antiques dealers is Paige Hathaway of the super-elite and prestigious The House of Hathaway. Her father, an expert in Chinese antiquities, is demanding that Paige acquire the dragon At All Costs, so Paige persists until Nan agrees to bring the dragon in for authentication and evaluation. But once the dragon is brought in Paige's father David inexplicably decides to take the item out of the store. Unfortunately, he's attacked and the dragon is stolen, leaving The House of Hathaway responsible for the loss of an antique that is possibly priceless.

David was mugged after taking the dragon to Chinese-American artist Jasmine Chen, his lover, because he knows she is haunted by images of this item in her nightmares. But this meeting doesn't go well: David fathered a daughter, Alyssa, with Jasmine, and his refusal to publicly acknowledge his child and the shame this brings on Jasmine has been devastating.

As Riley and Paige start to unravel the mystery of what happened to the dragon they discover Alyssa, and how the Hathaway, Delaney, and Chen families are connected. Worse, they discover that the dragon lies at the heart of it all, and that the very people who need to give them answers have been telling lies, and these lies have cursed their family to experience tragedy unless they are exposed and the dragon is returned.

I found this book to be a compelling read: I liked the way the city is used as a supporting character throughout, how discoveries happen at a measured pace that maintains the flow of action, and the way characters feel authentic in their confusion and search for answers. Also important is the exploration of the Chinese in the Bay Area, a relationship that anyone familiar with California history knows is a social snarl far more complicated than it looks at first glance. These aspects of the novel make the story feel bigger and situated in a realistic family tangle. Riley, Paige, and Alyssa all feel like the others have had the better lives and upbringing, and their insecurities illustrate how people value different things and the cages we create and imprison ourselves within.

If I have one complaint about the book it is that it introduces a mystery involving the mother of one of the three main characters and then doesn't really do anything to resolve this subplot. This is a story where the author resolves, or seriously addresses, almost all of the plot threads, and this one sticks out for me, especially because of the character it involves. I would have appreciated an epilogue of some sort, especially because this is a stand alone novel.

As a further note I will add that I received this novel as a free Kindle download, which is a large part of the reason why I read this book by a novelist I had never read before. I find that I like the way Freethy writes and how she constructs her narrative. I have the feeling I will me reading more from her in the future!!

You know what they say about judging a book by its cover. Anyway to be fair to the author it was not a bad read. I suppose “love story with a bit of intrigue” might sum it up. It is a story about a beautiful rich debutante whose family owns a large and exclusive antiques business. She becomes involved with a handsome young man who runs a security firm, not as you might expect though his business with her family’s store but because his grandmother finds a rare Chinese antique in her loft, “now how often does that happen?” about every week on the antiques road show. Anyway under the supervision of her grandson, guess which store they take it to be valued! You guessed it, and here the love story begins along with the intrigue when the precious antique disappears. It took a while to finish this book simply because was one you could put down. I would like to add however that the author conducts dialogue between the couple very well but a little more intrigue and less of the obvious romance angle might have been better.

What begins as an attic find that gets appraised as a rare and valuable antique dragon, quickly turns into mystery with countless twists and turns. Sure, handsome man meets beautiful woman, but various complications turned it into a compelling read that kept this reader curled up. While offering a peek into family dynamics, the story continually unveils hidden secrets that intrigue the main characters -- who are often at odds albeit physically attracted to each other. For me, it was the interesting secondary characters who heightened my interest as much as the mystery surrounging the valuable antique dragon. Using San Francisco as a supporting character made the flow of action more fun and I loved history lessons about one of my favorite cities.

This was an original story that shows how most people have their own insecurities, despite their social/financial status. This story also teaches that we must accept the past in order to move forward.
It was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more of her novels.

Golden Lies is a nice cosy read. Just add one large glass of red wine and one bar of Dairy Milk for the perfect evening.

It has love, lies, intrigue, mystery, betrayal and family secrets.

I was kept guessing as to whether the two main characters would end up together, or whether the chips on their shoulders were simply too large.

Most of the characters had skeletons in the closet, which made the story all the more intriguing. There was much to be revealed throughout the book.

The only thing that prevented me from giving this book five stars was the lack of surprise at the end. I felt that the build up that kept me intrigued throughout the book had been a little misleading. Although interesting revelations had occured throughout the story, the ending seemed a little flat and predictable. But I have based my four star rating on the enjoyment factor for the vast majority of the book.

By chance I brought this book to the beach, having never read any of Barbara Freethy's novels before and I was wonderfully surprised. She will be on my list of authors to look for in the future. Golden Lies was a page turner, kept my interest and the dialogue between her characters was great. She is a super storyteller. This book involves three families and the how they are brought together. There is history,mystery/suspense,family secrets and romance in this book, what more could you ask for.

To escape the enemy during WWII, two soldiers and a local Chinese man devise a plan to smuggle ancient artifacts into the U.S. After a mysterious fire, the artifacts are lost and the men part ways. Now, more than 50 years later, the sins of the fathers have come to light and it is up to their 3 grandchildren to make things right.

Another good romantic suspense from Freethy. Lots of family emotion and Chinese lore. Freethy always includes a list of book discussion questions. Similar to Kristen Hannah orBarbara Delinsky.

This was just OK for me. I felt it was loaded with unnecessary detailed descriptions of actions and situations that made the events in the book slow-moving and the story a bit cumbersome. I liked Page. She is a very well-moulded character and very likeable! 🌟🌟🌟

I read books like this when my brain is tired from thinking and just needs a break, or when I am not sure what book I really want to read and just need something to get me through until I decide. I consider books like this one filler books. Not horrible but not terribly great either, rather predictable. This isn't the first Freethy title I have read, and it won't be the last because I always need filler books. :) But also Freethy doesn't write badly and in this particular book she even includes a bit of a mystery to break up the predictable lust story.
Paige Hathaway and Riley McAllister are introduced through his Grandmother's find of an ancient Chinese dragon in her attic. What it is doing there, how it got there, is anyone's guess. Paige's father acts oddly upon seeing it and it disappears from his possession upon a visit to Chinatown. Thus begins the search for the dragon and why it's so important. In the process of trying to solve the mystery of the dragon Paige, Riley, and Paige's newly discovered half sister Alyssa learn things about their parents and grandparents that explain much of their lives. I probably don't have to spell out what is also discovered between Riley and Paige. That's the lust part of this story. When all is said and done the dragon ends up revealing important parts of each families histories and their ties to one another.
It was a decent enough filler book, truthfully the intrigue part around the dragon saved it from being 100% predictable.

I really enjoyed this book!!! I have never read anything by the author before and I was very impressed and please with my first read. This book brought romance, mystery and even some family drama. I love how the Hathaways , the Chen’s and the McAllister families were all twined together. This story is about the Hathaway family who has money and owns a museum of sorts and the McAllister family comes to them to praise an artifact. The artifact gets stolen and in the process of trying to solve the mystery we get introduced to the Chen family. The Chen family are Chinese and live in Chinatown in San Francisco and as the story unfolds come to find out Mr. Hathaway had an affair with a woman from the Chen family and had an illegitimate child with her. After trying to hide the secret for years it comes out in the process of solving the mystery of who stole the dragon artifact. This had a beautiful ending!!

Barbara Freethy does a good job of introducing a variety of settings in her books. This one had a lot of Chinese art information, life in Chinatown in San Francisco. Yet it's not just boring information, but information woven into the story line. The one warning I have after reading three of her books, she's an excellent writer with an interesting story, but seems to include several unmarried sex scenes in her stories and they are all the same. I think she just changes the names of the characters in each book. So great writer, but I'm not planning to start another book by her since there's lots of good books on my 'want to read' list. My one complaint about owning an e-reader, I download books that I'm not able to flip through the pages first & get well into the book before I realize it's not really my style.

My Rating System
3 stars - A good book that I enjoyed reading
4 stars – Struck a chord with me, made me think or question
5 stars – Something about the book haunted me or stayed with me long after I finished it. Unforgettable.

Multi-layered contemporary that revolves around the discovery of an ancient Chinese dragon....that happens to carry a curse.

Reading Golden Lies is like sneaking into a chocolate factory and indulging in every kind of treat imaginable....sweet, bitter, or mellow, it's all yummy.

I especially enjoyed the unexpected connections between the characters. While we all like to think our grandparents are special and can do no wrong, the sad truth is, they're just as prone to lapses in judgment as the rest of us. This was a painful discovery for the young people caught up in the intrigue.

Excellent book about complicated family relationships that evolved after 3 unlikely men became friends in WWII while stationed in China. One man was a native Chinese, one a wealthy scion from a prominent family, and one a poor Irish American. What happened in China, when the 2 Americans were shot down and were rescued by the Chinese man, has had a profound effect in the family members of all 3 men more than 50 years later.

I've yet to read one of Barbara Freethy's books I don't like.

Not her best, wasn't convinced that the love story got the attention it deserved. Plot over-reached and as a result was never fully developed. She did, however, capture an honest portrayal Alyssa, the character who grew up torn between being half-Chinese and half-American. Shades of Amy Tan and the Joy Luck Club, but again, underdeveloped plot.

Riley McAlister's grandmother finds a Chinese dragon in her attic and takes it to an Antiques Road Show to see what it's worth. A lot! And everyone wants to examine it. While it is being evaluated by the leading San Francisco Chinese art authority, who removes it from the premises, it is stolen and he is injured. His daughter, Paige Hathaway, is trying to save her father's reputation and helps Riley investigate. But this brings to light her father's illegitimate daughter, Alyssa Chen. Three leery people work together to find out what is special about the dragon and who has stolen it. Each has a troubled background and lots of angst fills the pages. A little too many interior thoughts. Lots of denial and lack of communication when it counts. I thought it dragged. Not her best.

Paige Hathaway is from a wealthy family, Riley McAllister is from a middle class home that had more than their fare share of rough times, and Alyssa Chen grew up in China Town outcast from her own family with only a secretive mother to rely on. Three very different people who all share a part of their history with each other.

This is a wonderful novel with very strong characters and a plot that will keep you guessing to the end. Ms. Freethy is a talented writer who wrote a very original story that captures the reader and makes her novel a hard one to put down. I was not disappointed in the least, and will recommend this novel to anyone and everyone.

Another Winner!

I am a Barbara Freethy fan. This book is a good example of why I am such a fan. She brings her characters to life and tells their stories in such a believable way. Paige is the female lead character in Golden Lies. She's been brought up in a wealthy family but tries her best to not let that define her. This is an interesting storyline with other interesting characters. I will continue to read a Barbara Freethy book anytime I can. And as always, I will recommend have books to others.

Three families tied together by a secret pass that is about to come out by the discovery of an ancient relic. Rley's Grandmother finds a dragon statue in her attic and decides to take it to an antiques tv show. This unleashes a mystery decades old that involves Riley.s family and the families of Paige Hathaway and Alyssa Chen. As the 3 struggle to solve the mystery of the dragon they also find out things about themselves. This is a great read and typical Barbara Freethy with its twists and turns

This book had an interesting premise that I felt ending up lacking overall. It also feels like I know this story from somewhere else, but done better… The representation of the Chinese culture feels rather stereotypical (though I am obviously not an expert), and the connotations were rather negative. The love interest relationship is pure lust and feels very unearned even then. This is a book that killed some time but never really grabbed my attention – however it was also more memorable than other books I read this holiday and which I rated more highly – so take from that what you will.

Golden Lies and a curse

I was hooked the minute I started reading this mystery. The pieces fall into place as Riley and Paige start to investigate the disappearance of a golden Dragon, that Riley's grandmother brought in to Hathaways's to be appraised, and the attack on Paige's father, who took the Dragon to Chinatown, which left the Dragon missing. To say more would ruin the HEA.

Good story line

I enjoyed this story as it was different from a !it of mystery romances I have read read recently. As a result think I will look into more of this author's other books & series. Just a note however nothing g to do about the story line ----- wish all author's would rethink about drinks--- why do they ALL seem to think "diet" soda is a good thing? How about a change to seltzer with added citrus flavor- no sugar added at all!!!!!

This is a very interesting mystery wrapped around Chinese curses and dragons. Paige Hathaway met Riley McAllister when his grandmother discovered a very old sculpture of a dragon in her attic and had it appraised and that is where the story begins. Three families become involved in this twisted mystery and the journey is fascinating. Great story

Oh my. There is The Song That Never Ends--my kids drove me a bit crazy with that one. Well, this is The Book That Never Ends. This was twice as long as it should have been. So dragged out. It would have been quite enjoyable if it was a lot shorter. Characters were good for the most part, although the horn dog was irritating.
