Disclaimer: I received an ARC of Give Nothing Back from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed Garvin's first book, Take What You Can, but I am questioning that now. The sequel, Give Nothing Back was exponentially better. The fun and somewhat light-hearted Twilight vibe of TWYC left the building. The stakes were raised. The characters were even more fleshed out and relatable. I loved finally getting some more detail on what Josh's problem with Frederick really was. It made up for him being so insufferable (a little bit anyway). The dynamic between Frederick and his father kept me reading long past when I needed to go do other real-life things. Paige also had a lot of growth, too.

Overall, this was an excellent sequel to a great debut novel and makes for a perfect summer read.

What an amazing experience! I am so impressed with this story and its execution. It is packed with fun, adventure, action, drama, family, friendships, and betrayal. You name it, this story has it and it will keep you invested during its course.

Now I am wondering why did I take so long to read this one. The author has done an immense job. The story is fast-paced, there is never a dull moment and the characters have the shade of white, black, and grey. This book is a sequel to Take What You Can and I will recommend reading it before jumping to book 2 (Give Nothing Back). Both the books are available on kindle unlimited.

This is a fantastic sequel to a perfect debut. I totally recommend this series.

Firstly I would like to thank Heather for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really did enjoy the first book, Take What You Can but I definitely preferred the sequel over the first one.
Heathers writing style resonates with me and she really can make a story come to life. The characters moving forward showed great character development and they truly made the book for me, and I loved them. (especially Fredrick :))
I was invested in the plot from the very beginning and didn't want the story to end. It truly was an amazing experience reading this gem and I can't wait to read more of Heather's work soon!
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone and would like to thank Heather once again for letting me have this experience!

Give Nothing Back!

It's always hard reviewing a sequel, you don't want to give too much away.. let's see how well I do!

Paige Lawson and her OFFICIAL boyfriend Fredrick are not your typical couple but trust me when I say... book two had me even more invested in this relationship!

Fredrick has so many hidden secrets and quite honestly is not someone that good girl Paige should be dancing around. However, you can see how much this duo is inseparable. Paige absolutely loves Fredrick and of course Fredrick will go to any lengths to protect the girl he loves.

In this read, you start to see the layers of Fredrick peel back, exposing his past and emotions to Paige, which ultimately brings them even closer together and it's a good thing, they are going to need it! So much danger and chaos comes their way.

Give Nothing Back is fun and dangerous! The ups and downs will have you invest and the characters will have you smiling.

Thanks for reading

in the sequel to ‘take what you can,’ we follow paige and fredrick in their new relationship while they navigate and deal with threats that could put them and their loved ones in danger. fredrick’s father is back in the picture and tries to convince fredrick to get his hands dirty again, while paige wants him to stop involving himself in his group of “pirates.” fredrick feels trapped, and danger is lurking around every corner.

wowowow, i loved this book so much! fredrick is definitely one of my new book boyfriends; i love him so much. i really enjoyed watching paige and him continue to grow closer together, and the light steam in the book was honestly so great! i enjoyed the action in this book, and just like with ‘take what you can,’ i was on the edge of my seat, not sure how the story would end. i think i enjoyed the first book just a little bit more because we got to see so much more of the pirates and what they did as a group. i also think we could have seen a bit more of paige at school since this was her senior year, but i still really, really enjoyed this book and am so glad i got to read it early! i would definitely recommend checking out this duology!

i was gifted a copy of ‘give nothing back’ by the author in exchange for an honest review! all opinions are my own.

I didn’t want this book to end!

Fair warning for anyone going to read this book, you might sacrifice your sleep to keep reading this book. You might also fall in love even more with Fredrick in this sequel, I know I sure did!

I honestly didn’t want to put this book down. It kept lingering in the back of my mind every time I had to step away from it. The storyline is so compelling and the way that it is written from Paige’s perspective is just amazing. She made me feel so many feels!

I loved Take What You Can (the first book), but I think I might even love this one more. Although I might be a bit biased cause I might have a slight crush on Fredrick (by slight I mean, major). But then again that’s only because of Heather Garvin’s great writing, right?

These two books will definitely be worthy of a reread for me and I will be sure to buy the paperback version of this book once it comes out.

I was an ARC reader, so I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! As much as I enjoyed Heather’s debut novel, Take What You Can, this sequel is definitely my favorite of the two and totally surpassed my expectations! If you enjoyed Take What You Can, you should check out Give Nothing Back!

I normally don’t have a whole lot of time to read, but I had some time off and was able to devour Give Nothing Back in less than a week, which is very quick for my standards. Heather created another page-turner by ending many chapters with cliffhangers, which kept me on the edge of my seat.

This story hit me with all the feels! My heart raced, tears streamed down my face, and I definitely laughed out loud more than once! Paige, Frederick, and the pirates became my friends and I didn’t want their story to end because I knew that would mean saying goodbye to them when I read the last page.

I would also like to mention that I noticed an improvement in Heather’s writing. Not that the first book was bad by any means, but there is a difference in the maturity and development of the writing in this book versus Take What You Can.

As with the first novel, I really enjoyed the story even though I don’t typically read content like this. I also feel I should mention some trigger warnings: cussing (including the F word), alcohol abuse, manipulation associated with alcohol abuse, and feelings of disappointment, frustration, anger, guilt, sadness, etc. associated with being a child of an alcoholic.

First and foremost I would like to thank Heather Garvin for allowing me to be an ARC reader for Give Nothing Back!

After an event filled summer break and the start of senior year Paige Lawson, Fredrick Pryce and the pirates have returned in the sequel to Take What you Can. Give Nothing back is filled with adventure, familial drama and turn after turn of events. Give nothing back will both make you laugh out loud and pull at your heart strings. While I read Take What you Can in one sitting, I had to savor Give Nothing Back, I knew I was going to love the book and just did not want it to end. Definitely two books that will be reread!!

Another page turner from Heather Garvin, I gave this book 5 stars, will definitely recommend and be purchasing a copy for my bookshelf’s on publication day!!

First, I want to thank Heather Garvin for allowing me to be one of her ARC readers for Give Nothing Back. I was lucky enough to have a chance to read her debut novel, Take What You Can and am extremely grateful that I am reading this one early as well.

I never thought I would find myself falling for a pirate, but here I am. Completely swooning over another a dark, brooding, bad boy with a sweet side. I devoured this book in a little over a day. That’s how good it is! I really liked the development of the characters in this one. I loved seeing Paige come into her own and grow as a character, standing up for herself and the people she loves. Give Nothing Back gives you so much; action, suspense, romance, comedy. There were times where I found myself on the edge of my seat and times where I found myself getting choked up. This awesome sequel gets a solid 5 ⭐️s for me!

Check out Take What You Can on Amazon NOW & Give Nothing Back on 5/17/21!

I was fortunate enough to be a BETA reader for this YA story, and let me tell you...what a sequel! I didn’t think I could fall in love anymore with the pirates and Paige, but I just did. With even more action than Take What You Can, this novel shows the progression of Paige’s and Fredrick’s steamy passion. Grab this YA read as soon as it comes out in April!

This book takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride! It gave me all the feels. I laughed. I cried. I fell in love with another pirate. This book has action and romance and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s the perfect sequel to “Take What You Can” and I can’t think of a better ending to Paige and Fredrick’s story. The ending is perfection. If you have a weakness for pirates like me then you must read this book. If you have not read “Take What You Can” then you need to read it so you can fall in love with pirates and read this amazing sequel for the perfect conclusion to the story. Both books are perfect beach reads!

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book tied up all the loose ends that Take What You Can left us with. There was drama, murder, love, and pirates! What more can you ask for in a book?
*TW for talking about sexual abuse in several parts of the book*
I could see the growth Heather Garvin had in her writing between the two books and I’m so happy to be along for this ride! Only problem is, now I want more! I want to see where Paige and Fredrick go from here. What happens next? Will there be another book?!

It's the last day of school and Josh drags Paige to a beach party where she meets Frederick. Josh warns Paige to stay away from Frederick because he's 'bad news', but he refuses to elaborate any further and of course Paige ignores Josh because otherwise there wouldn't be a story. In the end, Paige learns that Frederick is a thief and part of a gang, but their love continues to blossom despite that revelation.

I'll be quite frank, I really enjoyed Paige and Fredericks story, which is split across two books (Take What You Can and Give Nothing Back). Paige is my favourite kind of YA character; she's a bookworm who likes older rock music and she's quiet and reserved. Frederick, despite being a thief, is one of the good guys who, regardless of his interesting moral compass, always tries to do what's right. Not only that, but there's a whole slew of well rounded side characters.

However, this book read like Twilight without the vampires. Paige is almost a carbon copy of Bella and if Frederick had sparkled in the sun, he'd be just like Edward.

The secrecy that's explained away in Twilight because Edward is a vampire doesn't make sense in TWYC/GNB. Why doesn't Josh simply tell Paige, his very best friend in all the world BTW!, that he knows Josh is a thief and that he... (I can't finish that sentence because it's a spoiler)? The obvious reason is that if he had, there would be no story. But if he had, the story could have been taken down an alternative route or else there should have been an explanation for Josh's secrecy. Was he embarrassed by what had happened in the past?

Not only that but some of Paige's behaviour doesn't make sense to me. Maybe because of the life I've lived? I can sort of accept her falling in love with Frederick and not outing him when she finds out he's a thief. I'm not sure I'd be able to overlook it but no-one's perfect, and at aged 17/18 maybe dating someone like Frederick is simply so exciting that you can overlook what is in fact quite a serious issue. However, on several occasions Paige is attacked. On one occasion, someone breaks into her house and attempts to kidnap her. Why on god's earth does she not even consider going to the police? And why, when someone tries to kidnap her doesn't she scream the house down and alert her Dad, who she lives with, to the fact that someone's broken into the house?

While the story of Paige and Frederick has it's faults, as I said at the outset, I did really enjoy it. I wasn't happy with the story being split over two books though. I'd have preferred to pay slightly more for a single book split into two parts.

N.B. I have written a single review for both TWYC and GNB.

Sequel to Take What You Can, review for book 1 can be found HERE

Since this is a review of a sequel spoilers to book 1 may be present, although I will do my best to keep them out

I received an ARC of Give Nothing Back by Heather Garvin thanks to the author in exchange for an honest review.

Blurb thanks to Goodreads:

“High school and dating are hard, but even more so when your boyfriend is a modern-day pirate.

Paige Lawson has just survived her most terrifying and exciting summer, and senior year is about to begin. Getting back to her normal life is one thing, but figuring out where the pirates fit in is another challenge entirely.

And sensing Fredrick has more secrets to hide, she’s compelled to find answers—answers she’ll get with the unexpected arrival of Fredrick’s father.

His presence brings new dangers, not only for Fredrick and the gang but Paige, too. Faced with new challenges, she’ll have to decide how far she’s willing to go before she loses herself in Fredrick’s world completely.”

Review:

When the author reached out to me about Give Nothing Back a few months ago, I was honored. I loved Take What You Can and its gang/pirate plot. I loved that while stakes were high, the gang only did ‘minor’ crimes (nothing like I picture a major city’s gang would be like). It also didn’t glorify that type of lifestyle. Regardless of Paige’s feelings for Fredrick, she was not happy with his lifestyle and struggled with coming to terms with that part of him. This arc continued into Give Nothing Back in such a fulfilling way.

While there were moments that I thought Paige was being very ‘teenage girl’ (sorry), that is who she is. She is young and she is very green in Fredrick’s world, which at times makes her conflicts of lesser struggles feel petty. However, I still love Paige, especially her resolve and ability to truly experience emotions.

While the plot of the story was fairly predictable, it didn’t make it any less enjoyable. It also made those twists feel more impactful.

I’m assuming that if you are still reading this review, you have read book 1 and are thinking about the sequel. If you liked the first book, you will love the second. It has that same modern-day pirate vibe that had attached me to the first one and kept me hooked all the way through this one. In other words, I highly recommend the series!

”There's no magic. That's just what happens when you make something with love.”- Heather Garvin(Give Nothing Back)

If you are in search of a book with a perfect fusion of action, drama and romance, then pick up this series tout de suite.😍 I am spellbound reading this gem.So it’s GBN i.e. Give Nothing Back. It is the sequel of Take What You Can. I have a review of this book too so just check it as well to get the brief idea about it. As the 1st part of the series was a cliffhanger, I was dying to read GNB. I feel fortunate to read the ARC. Now all my anxious questions are resolved.

Give Nothing Back is about friendship, family, love, betrayal and forgiveness. It focuses more on Paige & Frederick’s chemistry. They have already fallen in love and their steamy swoony bonding gives butterflies in the stomach. Frederick is more upfront and Paige is more solicitous. Frederick is all ready to leave his pirate group to lead a normal life but he is stuck in the murk because of the despicable deeds of his father. The sudden entry of his father in the Pyrce family has created havoc. Meanwhile, the pirates want a better leader which makes the situation more problematic. Frederick is in a dilemma. What is his future now?
The Father-child relationship is different for both of them. The intense family bonding of the Pryce family is one of the promising parts of the storyline. In addition to all, I loved the pirates more except for the ”new one”.
The character development and authentic plotline are commendable. The duology is engaging with unpredictable plot twists. The writing technique and storytelling is exquisite and immersive. I would be willing to read it over and over. It's so good.
I am genuinely a fan of Heather. She is such an amazing person and it reflects in her work too.
Thank you so much @heathergarvinbooks for gifting me this ARC.
Give Nothing Back will be out on 17th May 2021. It is highly recommended. Grab it for summer asap.

Ps: Frederick has made a place in my list of book boyfriends.❤️

Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of these books. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Publication date: February 14, 2023

I grabbed these two books from NetGalley after having read Heather Garvin’s Crossing the Line (which I loved!!). I didn’t realize that these were previously published and reintroduced with new covers. I also didn’t realize they were a YA collection but honestly, they didn’t disappoint!

This is a duology told in the pov if Paige Lawson. The first book focuses on the summer leading into senior year and the second book continues through her last year of high school.

Paige is a wholesome, girl next door who lives in a suburb in Florida with her equally down to earth dad. Paige loves to read books, spend time with her close knit group of friends, especially her best friend Josh.

At the end of school/beginning of summer beach bash, Paige meets Frederick. A handsome teen with a dark past and an even darker future. Paige knows she should stay away from him but is drawn to him every time they cross paths.

As the summer wears on, Paige and Frederick build a relationship. As she learns more about what activities are keeping Frederick away from her, Paige fights with all her love and strength to get him out and into a brighter future.

I really enjoyed Paige and Frederick’s story. Heather Garvin’s ability bring these characters to life and really feel what they’re going through is incredible. Both of these are 4 star ratings for me! I would label these for older teens/young adult. There are some trigger warning for assault and violence but the romance aspect is fairly clean. I can’t wait for Heather Garvin’s next masterpiece!

I want to thank Heather Garvin for allowing me to be one of the lucky ARC readers for this fantastic book! I loved the first book, Take What You Can and Give Nothing Back did not disappoint! There is even more Fredrick than the first book which is the biggest plus for this fan. It took me just over a day to read this and afterwards I was left with a MAJOR book hangover, that now three days later I have been unable to pick up another book. I'm just not quite ready to say goodbye to my Fredrick, Paige or the other pirates! Normally in a series you have your favorites and your least favorites, well in this 2 book series I think they are equally wonderful and I NEED a 3rd book, even if there is no story left to tell, I would be happy with a bunch of filler. The romance between Paige and Fredrick was a slow burn in the first book, well Garvin had me squirming even more in Give Nothing Back and it brought me back to my own days with my husband when we first started dating! This reminder of our early dating made me even more attached to the characters and the story. Fredrick has come a long way thanks to Piage and seeing his growth and his desire to be everything she deserves gives this romance a Pacey and Joey from Dawson's Creek vibe that I absolutely ADORE! Just imagining Joshua Jackson's deep voice and his gorgeous face as Fredrick left me swooning after every encounter and had me parroting Fredrick's own words... "Paige, What. Do. You. Want?" Because girl, if it were me, I know what I'd say!! HA! Pick up this book! Read it and review it! It is worthy!

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

So despite anticipating this book for a while now, it was a slow start for me to really get wrapped into the story. However, once I finally got re-hooked, I was fully invested in reading to the end.

Character wise, Garvin continued to build upon the characters and relationships from the first book. Josh, who I really enjoyed in the first book, annoyed me more in this story. This however is due to his feelings toward Fredrick and how he let it affect his relationship with Paige. They had their ups and downs in this book for sure. My love for Leah grew in this book, she is just such a happy, bubbly person and is a great friend to Paige. Fredrick is still your bad boy, but I did really enjoy getting to see more of his sensitive side when it came to Paige. He is also fiercely protective.

With out giving too much away, this book had lots of ups and downs. As a reader, I would start to feel as though life was going smoothly for Paige and Fredrick and then Garvin would throw a twist at you. These ups and downs kept me reading and wanting more, because I'm a sucker for a happy ending and I did not want the story to end otherwise. I loved watching Paige and Fredrick grow and support each other through all the twists. Overall, I loved this story and would recommend it to those who enjoy YA's with some suspense and romance.

This series had me hooked after the first book, and I was excited to see how this story as I quickly fell in love with the story and the characters in the first book. I tend to find that I typically like the firsts in series the most, but this was not the case in this series. The second book somehow not only lived up to my expectations, but also exceeded them and then some. Garvin is an exceptional writer who truly knows how to hook readers in and then make them fall even deeper in love. This series as a whole felt like something that was simultaneously so familiar, but also so unique and unlike any other stories I have ever read. I tend to have a harder time with YA books (not because I don't think they are good, but because I feel like they are no longer relatable for me) but this was not the case with this story. Even though some of the characters were still in high school, I truly felt like they were complex and well developed, multilayered characters, who while they may be flawed still pulled at your heartstrings. I wish that this series continued, but I also was completely satisfied by the end of this wild ride which is usually rare for me. I could not ask for a better summer read, and even though Heather so nicely gifted me an advanced copy of her book, she is now on my auto buy list because I enjoy her writing and stories that much. I will say that there are tougher subjects such as abuse and ptsd covered in this series, but I also will say that I think they are touched on in a way that seems to fit within the storyline and it's not done carelessly. I tend to be a bit stingy with five star ratings, but this book in my opinion deserves every single star and then some. Truly a unique and fun read.

I absolutely LOVED this novel. When I discovered Heather back in August, I devoured her debut novel, Take What You Can, in one weekend. I was heart broken when I learned the second half of this duet hadn't been released. I waited impatiently, slightly stalking her Instagram, for updates. She teased me with pictures of her working on the story. It was evil.
Finally, she opened her list up for ARC readers and I jumped on the opportunity.
I pushed my own book aside to read this one because I needed to know what happened.
NO spoilers here, because I don't want to rob you of the experience. I will say that Paige and Fredrick get their happily ever after, even though his methods to make that happen grated my nerves. Love Fredrick to bits but that man needs to learn how to communicate!
In the end, my only complaint is that I wanted more.
5 fantastic stars for this contemporary romance.

Sequels are rarely better in my opinion… I typically feel like they tell a story you already felt wrapped up enough or you run out of excitement. That was definitely not the case for Give Nothing Back. I loved Take What You Can but I think I LOVED this sequel even more. It was non stop drama in the kind of way where you can’t stop reading.

ALL the characters developed so much from the first book and the story progressed perfectly-despite one scene leaving me in tears 💔💔 That’s all I’ll say so I don’t ruin anything.

If you love the show Outer Banks, read this series.
If you want to switch it up and read a unique YA, read this series.
If you think you don’t like YA like I was convinced, READ THIS series!

The perfect end to this duet! I'm left wanting more while being content with the ending as well. Paige and Frederick are definitely put through it in this half of the duet. The continuation of their story is beautiful with such an inspiring ending. Throughout this half of the duet, Paige is living through her senior year, directly following the summer she spent with Frederick and the pirates. There are definitely a lot of tense and emotional moments throughout the book following the cliff hanger of the first. Tears were definitely shed, and not just from the characters. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and again, stayed up reading it all night!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

Fredrick and Paige are together, although it doesn't feel like it to Paige considering she rarely sees him. To make matters even more confusing, Fredrick's dad is back, and Frederick doesn't want him to know about Paige, for good reason. Also, more history is slowly revealed as to why Josh hates Fredrick so much. In the meantime things are getting more intense with Fredrick's position with the pirates. Typically Paige is pretty easy going, but will this be too much for Paige to take? Or will she be able to trust that Fredrick knows what he's doing? There is only one way to find out!

First of all, I’d like to thank the author for gifting me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Second, I LOVED THIS BOOK. It had everything. Humor, pirates, gangs, fights, love, and some steamy scenes between Paige and a certain someone. I loved the first book, “Take What You Can,” but this one really answered all of my questions and wrapped everything up nicely for me. Paige is a lot more relatable now that she is a little less naive and sees Frederick and his group for what they really are. I highly recommend this one!

Oh my gosh, I don’t know where to start. I loved Take What You Can, but I think I may have loved Give Nothing Back even more. I was caught by surprise more than once by brilliant plot twists, and there were times I was literally grinning as I was reading because I loved the witty banter just so much. This book has everything a teen drama needs and so much more. This is the kind of series you just want to snuggle up in a blanket and read with a tea to get lost in the drama and young romance for hours. I love this series. 5/5 all the way.

I was an ARC reader for this novel and I want to thank Heather for the opportunity.

The sequel to Take What You Can is nothing short of incredible. Of the two books, this one was my favorite. We get to continue on the path with Paige, learning more about her experiences with Frederick and the Pirates. The nostalgia of 2004 is weaved throughout, being reminded of what life was like before smartphones, and it was one of my favorite parts. I have to say, the book brings more drama, more fire, and way more sensuality than the first. I couldn’t put it down. I strongly recommend this book.

A must-read for this summer! If you loved Take What You Can, you’re going to be just as obsessed with Give Nothing Back!

I love these characters so much, it was great to have this resolution for them (but I could also go for a third book!!! 🙋🏻‍♀️). The ending in particular was so good! And I was so nervous reading it the whole time, I was so concerned where it was going and how it was going to end!

I was so excited to receive this sequel to Take What You Can as an ARC from the author. If you haven’t read either of these, definitely add them to your list this spring/summer.

Sometimes we devour a book. Sometimes they devour us. I'm not crying, you're crying. Okay, yes I'm crying annnndddd I may go out and get a compass tattoo with a sparrow on it. Considering my fear of needles that says a lot! Judge me if you must. I'm left in complete book hangover and I'll probably re-read this series a hundred times because it's that great. I'm not one to brag unnecessarily but this book deserves all the rave. I can't believe the book is over... actually over. I need a book 3 PLEASE. I can't get enough of this hottest couple Fredrick and Paige.

This was even better than Take What You Can. It’s another perfect YA read - my god, I would have been trash for these books as an actual teenager. There’s just something so gripping about the angst and the relationship between Fredrick and Paige. I actually feel like I could be doing with one more in the series?! There’s something so nostalgic about it as well with it being set in the early 2000’s - no mobile phones or social media, calling on the house phone, genuinely not knowing where people were… it really adds to the romantic tension 🙃

Overall, it was the perfect summer reading, that I enjoyed so much. Vibes of this book were light, sunny and cute, and it gifted me sweet emotions while reading. It is a sequel to Take What You Can. “She wants to be with Fredrick…” and omg, he was amazing, adorable and he is absolutely one of me fav book bf. I definitely didn't want this book to end. I definitely want to buy a physical copy of the book for my bookshelves so that I can re-read it later and get the same wonderful emotions again
