Let's see, I live in NC with my wonderful husband and a 6 cats. All were strays. I think there's a sign hidden in the front yard that says 'Stray Cats Welcome.' My husband's been looking for that sign for years.
I really don't consider myself a writer. I'm a storyteller. A writer implies that you know your grammar, sentence structure and punctuation. That's not me. There's probably an error in what I'm typing right now! A storyteller, on the other hand, weaves a story and then gets help with the writing stuff. So, can anyone be a writer...probably. Can anyone be a storyteller...absolutely!
I started my first book in 1999, but a wonderful thing happened. Ballgames, scouts, golf, dance, homework (yuck) and a host of other activities took center stage. And it was great!
Now, with two kids in college, I'm empty-nesting. Woo-Hoo! Even though I can't afford to eat (just kidding), I have plenty of time to write. And read. And write some more.
I couldn’t figure out if I liked this book, or really, really hated it. It was one that left me scratching my head.
I think for me, the biggest drawback was the inconsistency: the characters, the plot and the pacing. Everything was all over the place.
I didn't care for any of the characters. Which made it difficult to empathize with them. While I appreciated Santana's grit, she ended up being more of a irritation than anything else. And I hated Luc from page one. He tried to redeem himself all the way through, but never quite made it.
The plot... Geez. it was crazy. First, it was obvious who the bad guy was. But more than that, it was obvious what was going to happen through the whole book. Yet even then, the plot didn't work to build up toward the climax. There were many scenes that left me wondering why they were there in the first place as they didn't advance the plot. The action was uneven and suffered from "add a whole lot of crap at the end because I need a bigger word count" syndrome. This is emphasized by the blurb which covers the last part of the book. If the book was plotted properly, the blurb should be about the first 3 chapters.
I don't even want to comment about the BDSM element. What a let down. It's obvious the author is not a practitioner. This book in no way should be labeled as BDSM. It's used as an afterthought and I questioned why it was added to the book in the first place.
Remember those old sayings our parents and grandparents used to teach us important life lessons? Like “Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.” and “If it seems to good to be true...it probably is”. Well what happens when you get two such instances at the same time? Hey don't laugh..it happens. As a matter of fact it happened in this very book.
Santana has gotten herself in a world of trouble. Almost dead, she curls up against a horse in a convenient barn only to find herself surrounded by more of the very beings that had landed her there in the first place. At least she doesn't realize it to begin with. We won't even discuss the fact that she is “mate” to one of them. Being the Alpha, Luc is smart enough to keep that little tidbit quiet as well. There is danger nipping close at their heels as they try to figure out who is trying to kill not only Santana but Luc as well.
This book is packed with action, serious sexual heat, mystery and great characters. The world Kitty DuCane has created is so well fleshed out that you feel like you're in it. I've already been to her website and there are two of this series that came before this story (so I bought them!), but each seems to read really well as a stand alone. Get out there quick and get your own ecopy of this book. If you like werewolves and shifter stories this author and this story aren't to be missed!
I was pretty disappointed in this book. It started out ok but the characters and world building developed quite a few holes. Santana became truly TSTL.
New to author Kitty Ducane, but truly liked this book
I was searching for another book on Goodreads a few days ago. Since it's become my go to for reviews. I know I can count on being real about any book in question. I discovered this book. I've never even heard of author Kitty DuCane before. The book was pretty cheap on Amazon and sounded interesting. So, why not give it a try. I bought the kindle version. I was surprised when I opened the book and on the 2nd page found a warning label!? Intrigued I read it. It basically said the book had sexual content and was NOT to be read by person's under the legal age of adulthood in that country. Also to keep your digital book files safe from young eyes. Really! Seriously! First off yes I am an adult. If a child had access to my kindle or digital book files in general of course I'd make sure of that. That's a no brainer. I don't need a warning label for it! I've read ALL kinds of books and NEVER ran across this before. I've read tons of romance novels with all kinds of sex and sex scenes in them. Fifty Shades of Gray didn't have that warning. Anne Rice's (writing as A. N. Roquelaure) Sleeping Beauty series didn't have that warning. If any books needed that warning or the disclaimer that followed on the next page of Santana's Heat. It would be those books. Yes, after the warning label on the next page was an actual disclaimer. Basically saying don't try BDSM without knowing what you are doing. Also, the author can't be held responsible if you do and hurt yourself or others. Ok, I get the legal need for it stating the author can't be held responsible for you trying to do something you may have read in the book. Then hurting yourself or someone else. This did leave me wondering what kind of sex scenes are in this!? Of course I had to read it to find out.
**Actual book content review starts here **
I truly did enjoy this book. The author writes well. The characters were well thought out and believable. The book is well paced. The storyline is interesting and you want to actual read it. The only thing I didn't like was when she would mention the female lead, Santana being turned on. She would write about her "womb clenching", and other stuff related to her womb. Ummmm, yeah no thanks. Reminds me too much of period cramps. Not interested in that happening, while turned on. No offense meant just my opinion. I did enjoy the story line, liked the characters, and wouldn't mind a sequel. It's kind of set up for one. No cliff hangers and a HEA in the end.
There are a couple sex scenes that do involve light BDSM and sex toys. Nothing that I thought warranted the warning and disclaimer. Though I get the legal need for the disclaimer in general. It's worth a read for sure.
Santana’s Heat was one steamy roller coaster of story. Luc is clearly smitten with the human who ends up on his property, and while he’s in the middle of taking care of pack business, he’s not blind enough to let her beauty and passionate nature go on the way side. He realizes some danger is lurking for her and can’t just allow her to leave, though she tempts the beast out of him.
Santana is a smart and strong woman who isn’t going to let one attack rule her life, if only she could figure out why someone wants her dead.
She fights off multiple attacks on her life that tie into the sexy man who’s playing host for her.
When she meets a young boy she’s taken back to the past, to a young life she’s not able to save, and will do whatever it takes to make sure this one is okay, even if it means her plans for escape are foiled.
High packed action and white hot passion fill the pages of this story. Things are clearly not what they seam and the answer lay somewhere in the unsaid, in a past repressed and not forgotten for one. Tempers will rise, fighting will ensue. In one instant of clarity it’ll all come together to show the future of the pack and an unconditional love unencumbered by an assassin.
Ms. DuCane has written a really exciting tale with lots of action and some extremely hot love scenes. The plot has a lot of depth and Santana is not what she seems. Santana is a particularly sympathetic character. She is smart, sexy and has a tragic past. Her wolf is pretty much her only friend and Luc has a lot to overcome to get past her protective walls. The author has thrown in a few plot twists that will surprise and intrigue the reader, making this one of the best werewolf stories I have read in a long time.
Not only is this story about two people who are mates unwillingly, but it is also a clash of the old and traditional with the new and creative. As leader of the North American werewolves and of the council that adjudicates them, Luc was under pressure to marry a pureblood werewolf rather than continue in a relationship with poor, underfunded and non-aristocratic Santana. She is also plagued by her own insecurities and self-doubts. The story of their mating and subsequent experiences is also very revealing when prejudice is allowed to determine one's actions. A very good paranormal romance.
Did like the story, but this one really is all fiction. I also am not impressed with how the author wrote the scene regarding Luc and Santana riding out on his stallion. Yep, as a horse rider I am really critical of that stuff. Yes, that is a small part of the book, but that is what bothered me the most. The other small things are that the Santana is too good at "everything", stripping, handles guns, tames wolves, etc... I know this is fiction and it is about shape changing, but she really is too good at that stuff to be true. I did like how Ms DuCane handled the Luc/Dom/Santana/Sub situation she put them in. Luc's character was all about Santana's pleasure and protection.
I've read it so many times I lost count.. the Hh are both so well thought out, it's easy to lose yourself in the action & be burned from the scorching heat of there love & hot sex!! The heroine her relationship she has with her pet wolf was bonus! Absolutely loved the story.
intrigued by the title, I loved this story from beginning to end. I found the plot well structured, beautiful and believable characters. while talking about a theme that is used as the werewolf, this story is original and is very pleasant reading.
Excellent book. The characters are bigger than life, the story is intriguing, the plot complex. If you like shapeshifter books and strong heroines, you'll love Santana's Heat.
