I thought this was the best of the Emerald books so far. There’s more development involved for all, the antagonist makes his move, and Ruby and Sapphire are back! This one features some good battling and some more positive character development for Emerald, to the point where I now see him as quite a sympathetic, likeable character. Overall, vol. 28 is a fun, entertaining read. I think there’s very little wrong with it, and as the penultimate volume in the Emerald saga, it has done its job very well, setting up vol. 29, the grand finale!
3.5 stars. Emerald was even more annoying to me in this one. He seems to be reaching a point of redemption, but I still dislike him. It also made me extremely angry that he beat a much more experienced trainer (unless maybe that trainer let him win?) and it also bugged me that the other experienced trainer (I know their names, I just don’t want to have to mark this for spoilers) lost to a frontier brain who doesn’t seem all that powerful to me. It was so good to see the Hoen region kids again though, and that made this volume a bit more bearable than the last two.
It has a lot of adventure, but you have to read the series in order. I like the fact that Emerald finally takes a liking to Pokemon instead of just Pokemon battles. I also like that fact that the wish Pokemon, Jirachi, awakens the same day and place that the battle frontier starts and finishes for Emerald.
Bringing back Ruby & Sapphire makes sense, but the Emerald character still is grating. I can now understand why Jirachi fits into the plot with Red & company.
This penultimate volume of the 'Pokémon Adventures' Emerald arc contains chapters 318 to 377 of the series and sees Emerald dealing with his growing attachment to his Pokémon while trying to complete his mission and defeat the Battle Frontier. While he is still probably my least favourite Pokédex holder, Emerald’s character development in this volume is still reasonably good. This volume also sees the full return of Ruby and Sapphire, which I liked as I do enjoy their relationship and characters. The battles in this volume are all very good with Emerald finishing off the Battle Arena before moving on to the Battle Dome and the Battle Palace. The return of Guile also results in some enjoyable action as he takes steps to complete his goal.
The artwork in the volumes remains as good as it always has, with the battles being easy to follow. The translation seems to be okay as well. The volume also includes the usual information on the Battle Frontier, which is quite interesting.
The volume leaves things on a very good cliff-hanger, setting things up well for the final volume of the arc.
Emerald is challenging the brains of the battle frontier and is trying to make his way through the battle dome but has to keep winning in order to face the frontier brain. Meanwhile Ruby and Sapphire make their way to the battle dome to meet up with and help Emerald. However, Guile manages to capture Jirachi and Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire try to help save the pokemon but have to go through trials before getting to Guile.
This was an interesting volume that was packed full of action that really kept the pace of this volume going. While I wasn't a fan of the way Sapphire talked it wasn't as big of a deal. I found the struggles of Emeralds feelings very realistic and warranted. I am hoping for a combined effort from the "pokedex trio" in the next volume.
I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.
Actually a lot better than the last two. I really enjoyed the fact that Ruby and Sapphire were brought back into the story and I was surprised at whom the villain was revealed to be! There were some funny parts in this volume and I can't wait for the finale of the chapter in which the fate of the previous hero's will be revealed.
Emerald has just gotten the gut badge but can he still save Jirachi? Will anyone know the secret identity of Guile? Who will get to Jirachi first? This is a great book for pokemon lovers.
