Isla's ability as a Seer has made her a life-long captive of a paranormal crime lord. Fae assassin, Ransom, offers her a chance at escape, but when she touches his hand she sees only blood, horror, apocalypse. What reason can Ransom have for wanting to rescue her, and can she possibly trust a man who deals in death?
**If your copy ended in the bar office rather than with another vision, you DO NOT have the most current version of the story.**
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. She believes in love, laughter, and that tacos are the world's most perfect food. When she's not writing, reading, working the evil day job, or wrangling family (both the two-legged and the four-), you can find her obsessively watching The Great British Bake Off.
The GOOD: The story was very intriguing, it actually kept me wanting to read, if your into paranormal reads then this would be a book for you. Ransom is a contract killer of the worst kind, who is feared, he is the strong and quiet type. You get a sense of a very bad man but I also sense a good in him. Isla has been held captive for 20 years by Bael, who keeps a tight watch over her because of her powers of touch to see the future. Ransom works for Bael at times but sees an opportunity to rescue Isla to take her to the underground who are a group that fights against people like Bael and many others, Ransom has his reasons in wanting to rescue Isla as well as giving her to the underground group. I loved it and wouldn't mind reading about this world of paranormal as it really takes you away to another world when your reading, Ranson and Isla chemistry was good granted you didn't get to see much of it. I haven't read anything by this author, I also see that there are two books already written regarding this series including Mick who the author introduces you to towards the ending of the book.
The BAD It's was over so quickly. This was the worst and most wicked teaser, just when you want to know what will happen to Ransom because he was hurt it was over, why because we will have to wait for the full length version of of the book called Revelation. I look forward to the series Mirus and will try to get my feet wet with the other books.
Oh Isla, how I didn't see you coming :-) I had thought we'd be getting some Drakyn action but I am fine with being wrong on that front. The little girl that Mick couldn't save is presented here and I was filled with excitement to see all these characters tales finely woven together. Not that I was worried it wouldn't make sense but I was curious to see how it was going to work out. I know this is the freebie that most people are picking up first but after reading the other two novellas and in order I have to recommend you try them out. Nolan's got a style all her own and it's kicking ass. Loved this teaser and cannot wait for more.
I downloaded this short story as a freebie for my Kindle. It is a lead in or teaser story, but wraps up with enough closer to allow the reader to breath in a non-panicked fashion and wait. Ha ha.
** Please note - this short ends with a final vision involving Isla and Ransom. If your file ends with Isla in the office of the bar, you do not have the updated file. Swing back to the retailer you got it from and ask the customer service to send you the most recent file.
This story is pure fantasy and paranormal goodness. Vampires, Seers, Wraiths, Faes oh my! The opening chapter is a kick-butt action scene. It was quite unique and I loved it.
I enjoyed all the characters. The story premise is just getting under way and sounds like loads of fun. Ransom and Isla make a perfect sexy couple. Sparks are flying already and I am looking forward to the actual fireworks.
Kait Nolan has a wonderful knack of writing movement and action. I have no idea how she can give the reader such tingles with simple words like: through the tunnel or we need to leave. Amazing. I can image that reading an entire novel written by Nolan would be great fun.
Blindsight is a nice sample of this storyline and these characters. I look forward to reading Revelation once it is released.
This is a short from the author's 'Mirus' paranormal series. I haven't read any of the other books and used this as a taster.
As a story, it works quite well. For me, there are too many elements. It has werewolves, vampires, dragons, goblins, seers, assassins and warriors and is set in a world that appears both contemporary and imagined. I admit I found it a little too much. However, the story carries well and there is enough intriguing action to tempt the reader on.
The characters are well drawn in the main. Pacing is handled admirably. And I suspect there is an element of romance hidden in there somewhere. That's something that will be more apparent to readers of the genre, but there were flags that signalled romance was a possibility.
I am undecided about whether I'll read more from this source. I suspect it depends whether I can find time and whether I discover other books with more content I prefer. But, for lovers of the genre, I imagine this will be a good series to sample.
I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but Nolan's a master of the craft. If you're a fan of her Mirus stories, you can't miss this enchanting little bite of that world. Not only does it feature Nolan's lean, descriptive prose, it manages to both tie together loose ends even as it expands her Mirus world's horizons in multiple exciting ways. Absolutely worth it and an exciting taste of things to come, I hope! Oh, and can I just say I love the cover? Is that shallow? Because I do.
Nice characterization. Great writing. This is the first story from Kait Nolan that I've read and I went online and bought 2 more immediately. She's one of those writer that I'll buy her entire backlist now that I've discovered her, and for me that is rare.
In Blindsight we meet Isle, who is psychic and has been abducted and forced to work for a rather unsavory villain. The hero is Random (gotta love that name!) and he's got all the right 'bad boy' elements that make him both sexy and dangerous, an irresistible combination for Isle. There is a lot of action and really skillful characterization in this story, which is a sign of a talented author when you consider how short the story is. I highly recommend checking out Kait Nolan's series and Blindsight.
I read this book as part of a read-a-thon fundraiser for At The Crossroads, an outreach program rescuing runaway and homeless teens from the streets in San Francisco. You can check out or sponsor my read-a-thon here.
I am not the world's largest fan of short stories; I find them particularly hard to review since very little growth character wise is ever brought into play. This is not true for this book. More even than character development I find I love the world the author has created and fluffed out sufficiently for the readers sake to seem foreign enough and familiar still. What I liked most about the book is the fact that the author said enough to make me wish it was not a short story but rather the beginning of a full novel. I am sure to be looking for the next two books in this series since I really enjoyed reading this short story. I am sure most of you will agree once you read the story.
I am so bummed that this ended where it did! I wanted to read more and find-out if Ransom will be okay and what happens with Isla. A fantastic short story with a frustratingly abrupt ending- You've been warned.
Just wrote something which I had to delete because it's a spoiler. Damn. And it was a really cool way to illustrate the fact that Kait reinforces her characters' paranormal attributes in a modern, believable way. Oh well. You'll just have to take my word for it.
Isla: a captive seer. Ransom: a Hunter, an assassin. Both wonderful characters. Their lives tangibly linked. This introduction to Isla and Ransom is powerful. I feel compelled to investigate the series further and think that you will be also.
More like 3 1/2 stars, but GR doesn't let you do that, A rockin' swords-and-sorcery story. Good dollop of mystery, good action, excellent pace. Characters are paranormal/fae and yet presented in a way that allows the reader to slip into them nicely. The plot relies a little on conveniences (a bit too easy to escape a highly guarded locale, throwing knives more deadly than bullets requires some suspension of disbelief) but Nolan knows how to kick up the tension which makes up for it. The antagonist needs a bit more fleshing out - why so powerful, what his place is (petty mobster but then why so powerful?) but that's probably a limit of the vehicle (short story). I'd read more if it stays on the adventure track, not sure if this series will veer into the paranormal. Definitively a writer I'll keep an eye on as her writing is of high calibre.
This is a free short story to introduce you to the author and her world. It features a seer, Isla, who's been kept in a gilded cage for the past twenty years by Bael, a man who wants to use her only for her powers. Ransom is a skilled Fae assassin who only wants to free her.
This was a gripping read from beginning to end and I was very disappointed to finish it. I immediately went online to look for more from this author. Her characters are engaging, the world is interesting and the plot was entertaining. Everything about this short story was superb.
Though I spent the night after reading this dreaming crazy scenes, the story sucked me in and didn't let go. I was awake even later, wondering about details of a world where psychics, fae, and werewolves operated like the darkest underbelly of any crime syndicate. I am absolutely anticipating good things whenever Nolan releases Revelation.
In the meantime, for those on the same, tight, Christmas budget as I am, this is free for who knows how much longer, and paints yet another unique and intriguing supernatural world.
(3 stars = I liked it.) This was just a tease of a story, but it peaked my curiousity enough about the leads, Seer Isla and Assassin Ransom, that I went looking for the continuation of their story, Revelation - it isn't out yet. Blindsight gave only hints at what might be an interesting world with a mix of paranormals - werewolves, vampires, and fae - and the promise of a romance viewed through one of the heroine's visions.
Highly enjoyable read, with vivid descriptions. There were a few points that were a bit heavy on the telling, but I'll definitely move on to reading the rest in the series.
EDIT: The aforementioned abrupt ending was edited, with another scene added that wraps things up better and leaves you ready for the related (not-yet-released) book.
Free short story downloaded from Amazon. I had no expectations but was pleasantly surprised. The action was fast paced but I didn't feel like anything was rushed. Isla and Ransom were both intriguing characters and I'm definitely going to read their continuing story in Revelation.
3.5 stars mostly because this felt more like a sample than a complete story. That doesn't mean I didn't like it, and it did it's job as I was left wanting more.
The world is very interesting, I liked the characters, and there is a setup here for a very good action-romance.
Nolan has a good narrative voice and I'll be checking out more from her.
Summary: Isla's ability as a Seer has made her a life-long captive of a paranormal crime lord. Fae assassin, Ransom, offers her a chance at escape, but when she touches his hand she sees only blood, horror, apocalypse. What reason can Ransom have for wanting to rescue her, and can she possibly trust a man who deals in death?
This story was really great, unfortunately it stopped with a sort of cliffhanger that made me run to my notebook to look up if there's a second one. Turns out it's still in the writing - argh! Anyways, an urban and slightly apocalyptic aproach on a seemingly great plot. Can't wait for more. I need to know how the underground fight will commence. GO Writer, write!
This installment in the Mirus series disappoints in only one way. It is too short! I am greedy and want to read more about how my two favourite couples, Mick and Sophie and Ransom and Isla are going to save the world. More powers converge in this novel, obviously preparing us for the battle to come. Bring it on! I'm ready.
Review: Okay, at first I thought this short story was boring and a little confusing for me. But when I can keep on reading I want to know what happen to next. Did Ilsa really did have feeling for Ransom or he have feeling for her? How come Ilsa did not noticed when Ransom realize what just happen she touch him where his heart is? I don't mind reading this series so I can know what going on.
So I really liked this short story. Interesting world, great characters, only problem is that it was too good and now I'm kind of annoyed that it ended so abruptly and I didn't see a continuation of Isla and Ransom's story anywhere else! Bummer.
I fell for the Mirus series with the first one and this one is just as good but... too short! The story kidnaps you and drags you in, making you feel for (and with) the characters. The ending is a cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more. I can't wait to read the other novels of the series!
Received this short story free from Amazon. Read this in lightning speed it was that good. Can't wait to continue reading the story of Isla and Ransom in the full length novel Revelation. He can be my rescuer any time!!
An absolutely wonderful short story. Finally an author who can plot a realistic, complete story in such a short space. I definitely want to read more of the couple, Isla and Ransom, and am off to buy more by this author.
I would give it 5 stars but the ending was a bit disappointing. However, as a short story it was well executed and managed to keep my attention till the very end. I'll definitely check out other pieces written by this author.
I liked it. I thought this was a great teaser to the rest of the series. Not that I have any of the other books yet, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for them.
Characters were interesting, and I found myself wanting to know more about them.
