A boy reaches puberty at around thirteen years of age. If he is one of the few, born with a caul, he will hit Magolescence by the time he’s considered a man. That’s when things can get really difficult.Dr. Obenweiser’s guide to Magolescence.Magolescence is a magical puberty, a stage in a magician’s life where unexpected things can happen while the brain prepares the body for life as a magician. At eighteen, Shane has more than enough to deal with besides disapproving parents, a weird doctor and an evil magician who wants to recruit Shane and his two lovers, Joel and Will, into his coven. He is going through Magolescence, too. Lord help him!
I live in Melbourne, Victoria, in the land of Oz. According to my own Teenage mis-adventures, I am just an ordinary guy with a penis which likes to get me into trouble…a lot. I’ve seduced trees, copulated with watermelons, and had nice old ladies pick ants off my naked body. Yep, that’s me. Mark Alders. All round nice guy and with my brain firmly in my pants, exactly where it belongs!
So what about the here and now? Well, I am a mild, mannered post office worker by day. I have a mortgage to pay and a partner named Lee who I have been with for *cough* twenty one years *cough.* At night, my muse, the bitch, forces me into bondage and makes me sit at my computer and type out stories about men having sex with each other…all the time…over and over…in varying degrees of WTF, too!
I mean, I have stories out there about alien spiders needing humans to nourish their eggs, red-skinned aliens whose balls glow when they are sexually excited, beings who cock dock with their victims to drain them of their life force, and a young man who discovers puberty is just the start of his problems as he comes into ‘magolescence’ on his eighteenth birthday and his penis turns into a snake!
Ah, the life of a story teller. The fun never ends.
Today Shane turns 18. His life path is totally directed by his parents who plan for him to become a lawyer like his father, get married to someone of their choosing and have 2.5 children.
Today Shane turns 18. He doesn't want the life his parents have planned for him. He wishes that he has the courage to stand up to them and take what he wants.
Today Shane turned 18 and his best friends Joel and Will kissed him (okay more than kissed they kissed enthusiastically everywhere). This is the best birthday ever!
Today Shane turned 18 and he started going through Magolescence.
This is a really great introduction to a new series. I couldn't help but laugh at the strange changes that Shane is going though. Each chapter starts with a quote from literature on coping with Magolescence and all of them written by Dr. Obenweiser whose only patient is...you guessed it, Shane. Loved the magic marker toting villain. There is something about Mark's villains that are such a joy to despise. I am going to love following this series.
I liked this one a lot. I always freak out when I read a menage, but Mark's books are always sweet and hot with no angst. So they never bother me at all.
This one was hilarious!! Every time some body part of Shane's would alter, I cried from laughing so hard. And every time the navel was mentioned I would crack up again. So funny!!!!
4 stars because the ending felt too rushed IMO. Can't wait for another book in this series.
While there were a few moments worthy of laughing, and yes, some hot sex scenes, the overall story left me cold. Sure, the scene with Alastair annoyed me some but even there, there was no real depth in the drama. I felt the story in general lacked substance and depth in the way of an actual storyline. It was too easy for me to just skim lightly over the text without it making any impact on me, as if my eyes were disconnected to the rest of me, taking the text in but not reacting to it. In short everything was so vanilla, somehow.
I felt like the characters were too flat overall and (I never thought I'd say this...) too accepting of everything that happened.
I would've liked a bit more darkness or at least conflict in the story, something to convince me I was reading about actual persons and not some cardboard figures just taking everything with little more than a shrug.
What a promising start of a wonderful new series. I love Shane and his friends. Shane has a roller coaster birthday! There is so much happening in the course of one day, it's almost dizzying
Shane finds new love but he looses his home, stumbles upon a creepy enemy and an unexpected ally. He can draw power trough love and magic! [image error]
I'm happy this is just the beginning and I hope the next part won't take to long!
After I read the second book of this Magician’s Coven series, I really want to read the first chapter of Shane became a magician who has two beautiful young man as his coven. Hmm, not bad. It’s quite simple-love-in-a-fantasy kind of story.
The book is started by cliche situation where Shane isn’t suppose to be gay. His parents disowned him right after he is caught standing naked at his room with another two naked guys laying on bed. This situation is a common situation all over the world, though, for some countries which already legalized gay-marriage, basically homosexual is unacceptable.
Like his life isn’t miserable enough, Shane must face some strange events. Such as losing his navel, his dick is gone and became a snake, and he has 6 nipples at the end of the day. Oh my! Fortunately, now he has Joel and Will, two beautiful young guys who support him so much. But, the question is, what’s wrong with him? Thank God, he found Dr. Obenweiser so he could know that he is having magolescene.
“Magolescence is the development of a magician’s magical abilities,” said Dr. Obenweiser.
WHATT? He’s magician? Of course, at that moment, Shane is shocked. After that, he has to accept his fate to be a magician. And, with Joel and Will by his side, Shane hopes he can fight over the Dark Magician, Alistair.
He now knew why he wanted both Joel and Will. They were Shane’s Ying and Yang
It’s a fantasy/paranormal book so I have to open my mind widely because the magolescene symptoms are hardly to believe. But, I am happy that there are lot of HOT scenes here. According to this book, magic and sex can not be separated because power of magic is improved by making love. So, let’s imagine, there will be a lot of ML scenes every time the magician needs to gain its power, right?
So, by adding 0,5 star from the Book #2, I give 4 out of 5 star to this book. Yes, there are lot of ridiculous part on this book but there are lot of HOT scenes too, haha… By the way, I love this line:
Love, like magic, is a funny thing. You do what your heart tells you, dear fellow. You don’t want to spend your time living in regret.
This is the first book in this series. It seemed this story was more set up than anything. There was a bad guy to get rid of but the thrust of the story was more on the three boys and the setting up the background for the readers. I really enjoyed it. I wish it was a little longer so we could get more of Shane figuring out his magic and life but this is a first book. Now I can't wait for the next.
I think this is a fun start to a great new series! I loved the characters and I loved all the crazy things that was happening to Shane as he went through the Magolescence. Definitely looking forward to more with these boys!
Wow! Now I know what other reviewers meant when they said that Away Team was a lot less naked than Alders' usual fare... The main characters in Magolescence spent about 75% of the book in the nude, even during the non-sexual action sequences. This book is definitely firmly planted in the erotica category for me. I'm not complaining; I'm just putting it out there, so you know what you're getting into here.
The overall concepts regarding magic, limited though they were given the large amount of text in such a short piece that was devoted to sex, were quite interesting. I hope that Magolescence just scratched the surface of what Alders has in mind for this world and its characters, as the novella served as a good introduction to these elements, but not too much beyond that. This installment doesn't get much into the how and why of the magic, beyond its link to love, presumably of the romantic and sexual variety. I'd like to find out more; hopefully, the rest of the installments in the series will deliver on this front.
There were still some action stopping editing issues in this piece, but overall they were much fewer than in Away Team, making it much less frustrating to read. This made me happy. I also have to admit that I didn't fall as madly in love with the main characters Shane, Joel and Will as I did with Ely and Emerson in Away Team; however, they were still adorable and endearing. They may just grow on me yet...
I'll definitely have to move on to Covenation soon!
I read this book for Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Fanatic's July 2012 Dusty Bookshelf Challenge.
An entertaining, fun, fast read about an eighteen year old teenager by the name of Shane, who on his birthday discovers that his body now has a mind of its own. He is going through Magolescene, a magical puberty where the body prepares itself for life as a magician. Shane will need the support of his lovers Joel and Will, and a wacky White Magician to navigate the first trial of his life against a Dark Magician.
This short story had me laughing and enjoying a not very serious book. This is the kind of book to read if you’ve finished something like an angst ridden story or one that required you to think way too hard.
There are some grammatical errors such as missing words, double use of words in the same sentence, and incorrect tenses. Formatting in epub is good.
2.5 Stars It seems that I am definitely a minority in my opinion of this book. While I did like aspects of this story I felt like this was a bit shallow and just a lead in for the next book. Other than the funky physical changes that Shane was going through (they really were funny) the only other thing that happened was the development of the relationship between Shane, Joel and Will. There was no conflict there either as they all wanted to be together anyway. We were left not having any idea why Shane is a magician and what he would do with his magic.
