Inflatable Hugh: The lowdown on a lowlife Member of Parliament.

Rate this book
We couldn't be meeting The Right Hon Hugh Pugh, MP, Secretary of State for Transport, at a worse time. The next general election is only months away and it's a racing certainty that following it he will be out of a job. As things stand at the moment he can only just keep his head above water on his ministerial income, plus what he's still able to fiddle on expenses. With maintenance payments to make to three ex-wives, three of his children at private schools, and the latest in a string of high maintenance girlfriends to keep fed, shod and watered, his future doesn't bear thinking about. But fate now takes a hand when he inherits his late brother's inflatable rubber woman factory. Salvation Hugh Pugh breathes a sigh of relief; a comfortable future is now guaranteed. However he hasn't reckoned with the twin forces of Vigilantes Against Sex Toys, and Elton Arbuckle, an undergraduate reading Sex and Inflatable Rubber Woman Studies at Cleek University.

If you enjoyed reading Inflatable Hugh I would really appreciate it if you were to recommended it to any of your friends who you think might like it.

The day after I threw in my mundane factory job to become a television comedy scriptwriter I was involved in a car accident which left me unable to turn my head. Since then I have never looked back.
Before they took me away I wrote BBC television comedy scripts for Les Dawson, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise, Alas Smith and Jones, Not the Nine O’Clock News, Ken Dodd, Roy Hudd, and several others. I also wrote the award-winning BBC radio series Star Terk Two.
I started writing books when I retired from scriptwriting in 1995. Up to now I have written sixteen, all of them humour.
Born in New Mills, Derbyshire, England in 1938, I still live there with my wife Delma and my mistress Divine Bottom (in my dreams).

My book Stairlift to Heaven is an Amazon Countdown Deal at just 99cents from April 5 to April 12.

Inflatable Hugh is an awkward book; inasmuch as it is not comical or satirical, based on too many improbably events for the very predictable underdeveloped story plot to work. The reader can readily engage with Hugh Pugh and his impending doom at the coming elections. However, his involvement and machinations with the An Hour in Bed rubber women factory are far too skewed to carry the book. VAST’s starched abhorrence of all things sexual, and the stereotyped behavior of its members entirely too predictable, diminishes the strength of the book. Removal of mostly irrelevant background character descriptions and concentrating on a strong plot would have produced a far better outcome.

Terry Ravenscroft has an engaging writing style that is very easy to read, and he certainly allowed his imagination to roam with Inflatable Hugh. Although the work has some amusing elements, readers might find the British version of humor too esoteric.

The characters are flat stereotypes, the situations and plot contrived, and the humour crude and repetitive. But I laughed out loud every two to three pages. What this says about me as a reader or a person, I'm not sure I want to contemplate...

Reminiscent of Tom Sharpe, raised a few smiles rather than full-on laughs.
