Appearances can be Deceiving…

Vanessa Lawrence had a falling for the wrong man. Case in point, her ex-husband. On the outside, the football player had looked perfect—handsome and rich. But Mr. Perfect turned out to be a lying, manipulative philanderer, and Vanessa vowed never to compromise herself for a man again.

Then she met Nick DeAngelo. He was also handsome and rich. And he just happened to be a former football player. His disarming charm gave her a rush, and he sure knew how to sweep a girl off her feet. But he was so much like her ex-husband…could she trust him? Could she trust herself?

The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

Bought this for Linda Lael Miller's name on the cover and it became my introduction to Barbara Dunlop. And enjoyed Barbara's story more than Linda's. Two short fast fun reads.
I have a question though, does the person who writes the back cover blurb actually read the book, as the ex-husband was a professional baseball, not football, player.
Only Forever - Vanessa Lawrence has a player for an ex-husband, who has written a fictional tell-all biography and he wants her onboard for the publication. Meanwhile, her boss has set her up on a blind date with another player, football this time, restaurateur, Nick DeAngelo . And no matter how attractive Nick may be, Vanessa is afraid to be burned again.
Thunderbolt Over Texas - Sydney Wainsbrook, curator at the Laurent Museum, job is on the line, she's got one last chance and she decides on the Thunderbolt of the North, a family heirloom from the 1400's. It goes to the wife of the eldest son, in this case Cole Erickson, who has decided never to marry. Sydney offers a marriage of convenience, and although the attraction is immediate, there is more going on than their attraction and Sydney's job.

Oof. Rough. I didn't even bother with the second story because I was so turned off by Only Forever. I had absolutely no connection to either character and didn't see why I should care about them getting together. The relationship felt very rushed and the love scenes were cliche (which is saying something considering how much romance I read and never have a problem with). I just don't think Miller is for me.

While interesting I don't think that this book was up the my normal expectations from this author. The storyline while interesting was a little too jumbled for my taste. I actually liked the Thunderbolt over Texas better.

Both stories were romance where they go back & forth with the main couple figuring out if they are really meant to be a couple. Both were interesting but I preferred Only Forever, even if there were more ups & downs in it, it kept my interest more. I finished that story in a short amount of time.

I usually enjoy books by Linda Lael Miller, but the first story was so frustrating I didn't even read the second one.

Three stars because the first story (Only Forever by Miller) was only a so-so read. The bonus book (Thunderbolt over Texas by Dunlop), however, was really good
