This is the third in the Allon series. I read Book 1 and Book 2 previously and enjoyed both. The world and mythology that Ms. Lamb has created for her young adult readers is rich and inviting. This third book takes place 20 years later in time from the end of the second.

Young Prince Nigel is enjoying his time with his younger sisters but having feelings of foreboding about the future. He does not want anything to change. Allon has just finished a war and the royal family has lost some people close to them. The defeated king sends an envoy proposing a marriage to King Tristan with one of his oh so many daughters not understanding the ways of Allon. When the envoy learns that in Allon there is only one wife allowed per man he is surprised but then offers the young princess to Prince Nigel.

Nigel is distraught when his father considers the offer - he does not want to marry a girl he does not know; a girl who does not believe as he does. But his father tells him that he will not be forced to marry but that a good king cannot refuse to consider an offer.

Nigel receives a gift from his bride to be and strange things start to happen. He finds her enchanting and seems to be drawn to her but is it his free will or are other forces in play?

As I said, I am enchanted by the wonderful mythology and the world of Allon. It continues with this chapter in the tale. This book takes on darker themes; themes of loss and consideration of ideas and peoples not like yourself. Important for young people to learn. I was a bit confused at the start because it had been a while since I had read the the previous chapter and the recap didn't come until a few chapters in - but once it did I was back in the game as they say.

There are several sub-plots in this book but they all tie together in the end and the fourth book, due out in August, nicely set up. What IS the future of Allon and how will the reigning adults leave the place for the younger generation when disaster seems to take away the perfect future?
