This book will introduce you to the fascinating world of watch making. It is designed for the average person with zero knowledge of watch mechanics, building, or repair. This book will teach you some of the basics on how a watch works. It will also show you where to buy the right watch parts, how to assemble them, and how to regulate the time. Don't buy another $1000 watch when you can build one for $100. This book also comes with a full color PDF file ebook for your computer or smart phone.
On the plus side, it's a quick read (took me about an hour) and it has some useful information for those with no background in what makes watches work. Also, it gives you access to a website full of updated information and a colour PDF version of the book, which is highly commendable.
On the down side: it's not very well written; it starts talking about watch parts well before explaining what they are and the photography is very poor in places.
The title is also a little misleading. If you are expecting a book that will explain how to make a watch from scratch, tiny cogs and all, then this is not the book for you. If, however, you fancy changing the dial, hands or glass on a pre-bought watch, then this book will be useful.
If you get the print version, it is in black and white and the paper quality is pretty awful - after reading it for half an hour, the front cover remained curled almost to the vertical.
Overall the book was great... good information with pictures to help you understand the parts and location. Also has links to sites where you can find the parts being referenced. Only reason I don't give this a 5th star is the editing of the book could have been a lot better. There are many misspelled words and several places where poor grammar or sentence structure are used. It's digestible for a how-to technical book but I would have thought an editor would pick up on and correct most of that... a simple spell check will catch 75% of what I saw.
Overall, it's a really good book and I'd recommend it for anyone thinking of repairing or building a watch.
Build up your own watches from parts bought online. Shows some simple tools and fixes. You can find some of this info on the author's YouTube channel and website.
