Wow. I loved the ending. I slogged through the first 2/3 to be rewarded by the last 1/3. I takes a fine author to weave a tale like this. Not knowing much about India, I surmised the British occupation of India was a muddled endeavor at imperialism maybe a mix of weird benevolence and pure exploitation. The British men seem insipid and unmanly with their petty concerns and gossipy ways. Most woman were knee-jerk snobs. Those who sincerely wanted to explore Indian culture such as Adela and Mrs Moore ran into a brick wall of posturing and misunderstanding. The Marabar caves symbolized the odd mix of beauty and ugliness. The ECHO was the disjoined mix that permeated everything. I longed to see the British act noble and the Indians drop their pseudo- subservient ways. The Indians apparently acted like they were pleasing the British all the while doing exactly as they pleased . East meets West with a big messy discordant bang. Whew! What way to live. Actually a good read if you exercise patience!
I enjoyed it but the pace was a bit challenging. Sometimes it moved too slowly for my taste. The cultural aspects were fascinating, especially as the communications led to numerous misunderstandings between the characters .
