Rate this book

I think this is the first I’ve read from this author, and it definitely won’t be the last. I found it to be an easy read that quickly captivated with Nelle and Grayson’s story. I had fun with the Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella comparisons. The story referenced elements of those classics while remaining wholly distinct from them. I loved Nelle and her desire to reinvent herself as someone stronger and braver than she’d been. My heart hurt for Grayson and the family expectations he was caught in the middle of. I really liked the way the book comes full circle and deals with the ghosts of the past. I’m curious to see what the author has in store next.

A Cinderella trope and a hero running for political office - two things I'm not wild about in romance, and yet I enjoyed Erwin's debut so here we are. I really liked this one, largely in part because Erwin tweaks her tropes. She resists the easy slide into Rescue Fantasy (the reason why I'm not wild about Cinderella romances) and puts an interesting spin on the whole "family feud" angle. In short, the hero and his half-sister know nothing about it, which leads to the heroine wondering how much of this "feud" was manufactured by her father to make him the victim and not a screw-up.

Nice characters, good sizzle, and it was so refreshing to read a nice guy hero for a change. This is a guy who declares he's not one for one-night stands and casual sex. Given the proliferation of playboy heroes in romance, Grayson was like a breathe of fresh air. Good, solid read. I really hope we get a future book about Grayson's sister!

I really enjoyed this one. The masquerade Cinderella theme mixed in the a Romeo and Juliet vibe was a great plot device. I was intrigued from the start and read the book fairly quickly. The plot was believable and relatable. I only wish what happened to the heroine before the events of the book was explored a bit more. Both main characters were well fleshed out. I found myself rooting for both of them and for their romance. They made me want to keep reading the book.

Dieses Romanheft hat mich überraschend gut gefallen und war für mich der ideale Start raus aus der Leseflaute. Plot und Cast sind überschaubar und es führt einen sogar zu einem schönen Weingut in Napa Valley.

This is the first book that i have read by Susannah Erwin but not the last as it was a real page turner that kept me reading to see what would happen next. Nelle and Grayson's family are bitter rivals and that could be a problem for them as they have such strong chemistry that takes them both by surprise and that will take some getting use to but will it be enough for them to have a future or is it all fake. I recommend you read this book as it is so well written and a great read.

New author for me and i really enjoyed the read. Nelle meets Grayson at a masquerade ball and as part of her job has to go ask him for a donation. Grayson's father was responsible for the destruction of her fathers career according to Nelle's father and while she despises his father, she is mature enough not to let it interfere with her relationship with Grayson or her work. Grayson believes his father is innocent in the accusations made by Nelle's father, but when the media forces Nelle to be his girlfriend to aid in his political career, they become friends and much more. There are some unexpected twists and surprises in store for Grayson, Great plot, great character building and discovery and I loved Grayson's sister. Awesome read.

**Actually a 3.5-rating**

All right, uhm...this one was a little underwhelming, except I did love how much chemistry and attraction developed between these two, in such a short time period. What I eventually did not end up liking was once they DID come together for a very poor-excuse of a FAKE Relationship was how time for them jumped for an inexcusable amount of time. This was around the mid-range of the book, so that we could ramp the Intrigue and Mystery in order to get to the HEA.

I was not sure to the HOWs? or WHYs? of this storyline set-up... because a mysterious explanation by the Author led me to fathom that Nelle had been lied to...because so many moments in talking with Grayson had me thinking..."did THAT really happen?"

It ended up irking me because Nelle can simply fly out to see and talk to her father in Las Vegas...or even give him a call on the phone. She seems to take the flimsy explanation from Grayson that just because HIS FATHER never told him, then Nelle's father was the Liar. Mainly because he was guilty of stealing money from clients and then, of course, taking the rap as Grayson's father bailed...

Our Heroine, Nelle, is the daughter of an old friend and business partner of Grayson's father...who is now a political juggernaut heading into retirement. And Grayson is planning to exit his FIRST career [investor/philanthropist] in order to enter his 2nd career in order to take over for his father, who is in very poor health and moving the "goal-posts" in finagling his retirement plans.

Nelle is working for a small charity, and she has been "sent" with her two colleagues to meander around this Charity Ball/Event to hob-nob and also network for investors. It's a "masked" ball...and several things happen to make it more and more impossible for Nelle and Grayson to figure out who either is. So, they will spend nearly all night with one another, until the stroke of Midnight when everyone’s masks can come off...literally and figuratively...

Nelle will know who Grayson is, but Grayson will not know Nelle.

As I stated, they had great chemistry and banter. I enjoyed that aspect, but then once it is revealed the two parties are WHO they are to one another... Nelle instantly second-guesses her own father. Because it is a case of [maybe] a mild Romeo & Juliet, a semi-bitter rivalry of families.

But here is the thing... Neither Grayson nor his older sister, Finley, knew about their father's EARLIER lawyer career with Nelle's father. And they seemed to shoot her down every time she brought out those "cards" to show them how dirty her father had been done by their father.

What is odd is that Nelle has grown-up knowing WHO Grayson and his father are since her own father was framed for the crimes of their first business together--I think it was a Law Firm--and she had to hear all the bad stuff about Grayson's family, at least dealing with Grayson's father.

So, uhm, at the masked event, a couple of pics are taken and make it to social media...while Grayson is announcing he is leaving Philanthropy [but leaving his company in good hands] and as he swans into the Political realm... he now has this mysterious Cinderella story following him.

His sister, Finley, is his campaign manager, of sorts...and she suggests Grayson needs to find himself a "side partner"--wife, girlfriend, fiancé...whatever he can manage to gain while he shoots for Election season. And she really thinks he should find out who this "Cinderella" woman was, so this can carry him through the political world and put him easily in the vacated seat left by their father.

Nelle would have left Grayson alone except for her Boss...and also the charity she is attempting to raise money for... Because of the push, she goes to see Grayson...and, of course, reveals herself as the mysterious "Cinderella" of the night of the ball.

I felt very wonky about the pressure to FAKE DATE...especially while not only were Grayson and Nelle shooting fireworks off the more time they spent together... but the cloud of bad vibes over their heads about their fathers pasts, and how Nelle's father was "framed" as the Guilty One...it kept being shoved into the back burner...and, hmm, this is where things get tricky, and kind of icky...

You cannot figure out genuine feelings or emotions if 1) you never address what is really going on... and 2) you litter the real relationship with "faking" everything FOR SHOWCASING, especially for Political gain.

I felt as if even though it seemed important about THEIR FATHERS...we never get to see or hear from Nelle's father... and with Grayson's father, he never comes into the story, until way-later...and then... AND THEN...he becomes this Ugly Cryptic Sinister Evil Guy...who we have been hearing about how SICK and ILL he has been, with some kind of cardiac concerns, I believe.

Nelle and Grayson have grown closer...and she lets it out that she is a CPA. We were informed that something in Nelle's past career/job got her blacklisted, "framed" almost similar to how her father was treated...so her working for a charity is far-below her real effectiveness. So, she starts to help Grayson out by organizing paperwork finances on his messy desk, in his office...and well, at some point...very close to the end, Grayson gets ALL THE BOOKS/PAPERWORK from his father...and learns just how dirty his father has been... and is still being, apparently.

Kinda think of what PRESIDENT HE-WHO-SHALL-NOT-BE-NAMED utilizes the campaign monies he gets from those poor unfortunate souls who believe in him...and then doles it out to EVERY ASPECT OF HIS BUSINESS LIFE...or even social life...

Grayson learns of his father’s deceit right after Nelle had a highly suspect and very unsettling "meeting" with Grayson's father...where he kinda/sorta put her in HER PLACE...and I just...

This was something I became extremely annoyed with because the whole summary explains how BIG and "a huge deal" this is for Nelle...as it destroyed her father...but yet... NO ONE TALKS TO THE FATHERS...to clear the story... nor do they ever get to show their faces for us to get to The Truth...

And apparently WEEKS & MONTHS fly by during the political season... right up until Grayson’s first debate with his fellow candidates...and yeah, when you wander back into hindsight...there was an easier way in which to tell this story.

GET THE FATHERS IN ON THIS...because obviously not only is ONE OF THEM LYING...ONE OF THEM IS STILL GETTING AWAY WITH WHAT THEY DID 20+yrs AGO...and then THEY DO IT AGAIN. In fact, it appeared that Grayson’s father raised BOTH Finley & him on stolen political funds, right from the start. There never seemed to be a single day money from the campaign was not sectioned out, in small doses so as not to look suspicious...so that, say, Grayson could be sent to a some prestigious private school at a certain age...eesh...

The other situation that upset me was colossal time jumps...because once Nelle becomes a part of Grayson’s life, a part of his political world as a "girlfriend"..."potential fiancé"...to "maybe wife"...the chapters take huge leaps of time.

Not a week... but one was nearly a MONTH AND A HALF/6wks...and this really sets me into not fully enjoying the story because WHAT HAPPENED during all that time...it becomes a matter of TELL NOT SHOW...and, yeah...for a book that took its time at the start and allowed for slow-burn chemistry and great bantering?... to immediately go into frog-leaping over weeks and months of "moments" and further intimacy levels they possibly reached...

...because at the point Grayson learns how awful his father is...and how he "framed" Nelle's father and is possibly about to "frame" Nelle...??? there are these scenes where the dialogue wants to tell me BOTH, Nelle & Grayson, have fallen in love... but HOW?... I know it was happening, but from 0-60pmh...and I cannot fathom when or where it happened.

I have to simply trust what is written is the truth. I saw it happening at first, but then was never allowed to see it ruminate or cultivate over a gradual period of time. This is a shame because I really liked and enjoyed these two MCs together. And their emotions felt honest and true when I was allowed to SEE and HEAR for myself, not be told stuff happened...and summed up for me in a paragraph.

This book was fine, and better than most HQ DESIRES. This is an author who does know how to tell a good story and give readers some fascinating characters to watch fall in love... I think I will keep going with this series [and this Author] for however long it wanders.

Romeo and Juliet at a Masquerade

I read a lot of romance, but I had read nothing by this author before. I was first drawn by the fairy tale theme in the title. It really wasn't quite *that* Cinderella inspired, but the enemies-to-lovers theme with a deep family backstory was certainly reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet in places. It was fun, too, that the author set this in San Francisco. The opening scene with the Ferry Building... I've been there, though it's been a long time. But it's fun when an author uses a setting that you actually know! By the way, I love the idea of having a masquerade ball in a contemporary romance. I am a massive fan of Regency romance, and a masquerade ball is often used in those romances but not quite so much in contemporary ones. Fun stuff! The characters are well drawn. I thought the heroine was strong and resilient, forging a new life for herself in a new place with a new job and facing a difficult past while still being true to herself and getting the job done. I'm not a particular fan of the billionaire romance genre, but I found the hero to be quite sympathetic because of his complicated family dynamics and his conflicted feelings toward the heroine. All in all, I thought this was a very pleasant romance read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

What a steamy tale of unexpected love, family drama with a Cinderella theme
Nelle and Grayson meet at a masquerade where the lure of not knowing who the other is increases the magic of the moment. Until midnight strikes and Nelle discovers her masked Prince Charming is none other than the son of the man who destroyed her father’s career. The photos of their steamy kiss and Nelle running away minus her mask, sets the stage for Grayson’s start of his political career. To save her job, Nelle shows up at Grayson office looking for a donation for her charity. Grayson will introduce Nelle to his wealthy friends, if she will be his plus one at an exclusive fundraiser. What follows are some steamy pages, but will family mishaps and interventions ruin everything between the two? You have to read to find out and will read the book in one sitting, it is just that good.

Nelle is starting anew after having to leave her old job on sour terms and is focused on rebuilding her career so when and how she meets Grayson is a shock to her and not a pleasant one due to their fathers past. The friction and attraction between the two is fantastic and you can see how Nelle battles herself in regards to how she is falling for Grayson as well as how Greyson is torn between doing what he is expected of him versus wanting to have Nelle. There are some great twists, laughs, interesting characters and story that has you turning the page to see how it will all pan out for Nelle and Grayson... and you will love the ending!!

Despite Cinderella being in the title, this book is only loosely related to the fairytale. However, this was a wonderful story and a heartmelting romance. I loved seeing things from Nelle and Grayson's points of view. There were definitely some steamy parts, but this story also took time for a lot of serious issues and character development.

3.5 stars rounded up. Solid category romance. one-sided enemy to lovers (which isnt my fav) mixed with love at first sight... His family is a political dynasty, he is a venture capitalist stepping down as CEO from his company to run for his dad's congressional seat. the sizzle is on point, the spice was lovely, the care he takes of her was *chefs kiss* it was a really good political romance, i'm still astonished at how much category authors pack into their ~200 page stories.

Entertaining. Loved the theme that we are the protagonists of our own stories. This plays into the reason for enemies-to-lovers, and how Nelle and Grayson resolved their differences. Great character development.

A Cinderella inspired fake dating, political romance set in Silicon Valley. There’s past family feuds, family meddling, and a great sibling relationship. This one was a quick read because I could not stop flipping to the next page. Despite so many tropes being in this it was easy to keep everything straight.

This is one of the steamiest Harlequin books I’ve read and it’s good!

4.5 stars. This is a delicious short enemies to lovers romance, with Nelle as a Cinderella/Juliet, and Grayson Monk as the Prince/Romeo, children of fathers who were once partners. Nelle can't deny her attraction to Grayson, but she also can't overlook the way his father ruined hers.

Disclaimer: I'm personally acquainted with the author.

There's some nice glitz, good kissing and steamy sex in fabulous, luxurious places. Some questions arise about where, exactly, the blame for the falling out between their fathers, lies. But somehow, despite politics and heartbreak, we reach a lovely happily for now.
