Yuki Suetsugu (末次 由紀 Suetsugu Yuki, born September 8, 1975) is a Japanese manga artist. Her career was put on hiatus after she was discovered of being accountable for plagiarism, including tracing. She later resumed her work on March 2007.
She debuted in 1992 in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine with Taiyō no Romance. Her works later moved to Bessatsu Friend magazine, also published by Kodansha.
On 2009-03-24, her work Chihayafuru was chosen for the Manga Taishō.
While I generally love the Chihayafuru series, this isn't one of my favourite volumes. A large part of it has to do with the first chapter. Our team plays against an international school. We find out almost immediately that these students are born and raised in Japan, and only speak Japanese. They just look foreign/have foreign names. So far, so good, right? But then we proceed to have our main characters marvel about how foreigners play karuta, and how they know the same things, and react to the same sounds, and have talents too, and it just felt so weird. Because for all intents and purposes these people have been raised in a similar way, and Japan/Japanese is their homeland/language. There is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't be just as good? Because looks have no impact on your ability to play karuta at all??? I'm not saying this is unrealistic, because I know there are plenty of people in Japan who actually believe that. That foreigners can't speak Japanese (or that they can only speak English and all other languages just don't exist or something?) But why does it have to be everyone? Why are they so surprised despite knowing these people only know Japanese/have never left Japan in their lives??? It's just kinda disappointing. Then we also have Taichi being really annoying whenever Arata comes up, despite also being Arata's friend, and I didn't really like that either. And the final scene also left a bad taste in my mouth. I know it's supposed to make you want to read more with a cliffhanger and all that, but it just wasn't working for me. As always the art is great, and I love the matches. Arata's part in this manga was cute too. It's not a bad volume, it's just not as good as it could have been.
Arata is just cursed, nothing is going his way. I wish he would show up more often.
We also learn more strategy, from card placement to player lineup. Chihaya and Taichi have grown so much and its so cool to see how far they have come in a year. And so many of the usual suspects are also there - it's so sweet to see how passionate everyone is.
Mangaka got creative in the art department this time around, using a lot of darker panels for shading and I dug it. The matches played were nice, we see opponents start to love Karuta and that’s fun. Hanano and Desk ship??? I was not expecting that! Tsukuba being in the starting line up was fun, now he needs a win lol. Also nice cliffhanger, Nishida what are you thinking???? 😮
