Absolute must read for parents of a baby with Down Syndrome. Not only educational for my husband and I but also for our daughter's pediatrician and therapists.

I am an OT and I have recommended this book to many families that I have worked with. It suggests resources to help parents make decisions on services that are available to their children. Most importantly, it is written with kindness and optimism.

People told me that this book was must-read when our son was born with Down Syndrome. It is not. This book is useless and extraordinarily negative about children with Down Syndrome. All it does is focus on the negatives of having a child with Down syndrome. Where is the beauty? Where is the joy? Where are the accomplishments of children with Down Syndrome? I could not stand this book. It had nothing positive to offer. It did not teach me anything about my son. I learned absolutely nothing from this book.

I have given this book one star because I don't believe that zero stars is an option.

Very factual, detailed, easy to skim, positive, resourceful, hopeful. Great photos of darling kids.
After looking at some other people's reviews, I must add that I did not find this a negative book at all! As the grandparent to a new little girl I found the book encouraging and the photos of the children darling. It was a well-balanced hope for some "normalcy" in the life of our family. Lord knows, there is no such thing as "normalcy" in anyone's life these days anyway! Grab on and love that baby!

This was a great overview and introduction. A little outdated (I saw this simply because this edition was published in the 90s) so I definitely need to get my hands on some more up-to-date information but this books provided me comfort, answered many of my initial questions, and will serve as an excellent foundation for this incredible journey we are embarking on.

This book provides a good overview of Down syndrome and is best used as a reference book. I tried reading it cover to cover when my son was a newborn and found it overwhelming. I recently got rid of my 2nd edition as it is outdated. I would be interested in skimming the 3rd edition to see what changes have been made.
