This weekend, I finished M. Allman's Tales From Imagination's Closet. It is a collection of 29 speculative fiction stories, ranging from macabre to hilarious to bizarre. Many of the tales would qualify as flash fiction, so they made for some nice, short reads when I had a break here and there in my hectic day.
All of them are unique, and Ms. Allman employs a straightforward, easy style that one can easily jump right into. My favorite story of them all was "Assailant". It had me laughing out loud. You'll never look at Frosty the Snowman the same way again.
The only things I tripped over were some editing issues. In a few stories, "Tom" became "Tim", and other typos halted the pace. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable read, and I'd recommend this collection for anyone who likes to enjoy some short tales in their hectic days. But don't take my word for it. Pick up your own copy today!
29 stories! Each unique, intriguing, and touching in its own way. I couldn't stop reading, the "just one more and then I'll sleep" promise was repeated several times a night. My personal favorites are "Existence," "The Guardian," "My Friend, Clarence," and "The Roads Not Traveled." The book is a mix of genres, sure to satisfy different tastes. I wish the book received stronger editing, despite that, M. Allman's imagination managed to shine through. I'm sure the author's imagination isn't dry yet, I hope she's planning another collection of short and intriguing fiction
The breadth of this writer’s imagination dazzles me! ‘Tales from Imagination’s Closet’ is a collection of around 30 short (some very short) stories of diverse genres which left me wondering what it must be like to live inside this writer’s mind. So many ideas and all so different! If I had to pick out my favourites from this collection, they would be ‘Secrets Never Die’, about a gossipy aunt who returns from beyond the grave to do what she enjoyed doing in life; ‘Come Back Doug’ – a rather haunting story of being literally stranded in the desert of alcohol-dependency; ‘The Stalker’ a chilling tale about a stalker with an evil mission and ‘Yesterday’s Children’, which was all about being as old as you feel – literally.
There were many other fascinating stories which were so interesting and unusual that I wished they were longer: ‘Finder’s Weepers’ a very clever idea about your lies coming back to haunt you; ‘Inside His Mind’, about domestic engineering and great fun; Laugh Like a Baby – an unusual and interesting idea and ‘Grandma’s Scrapbook’ which I found absolutely delightful.
In short, there is something to suit all tastes in this collection. I’ve always preferred longer novels to short stories myself, but I’m now converted. It’s always useful to have a short story collection when you want a quick read to fill a short break or at bedtime. I found myself dipping into ‘Tale’s from Imagination’s Closet’ in all sorts of situations and getting engrossed within seconds. I could rarely only read one story at a time.
There is no doubt this compilation would benefit greatly from sound editing, which I felt was the only thing that let it down. I would certainly recommend it as a highly enjoyable short story collection and will watch this writer with interest in the future.
This is an astoundingly good first collection of stories. Ms Allman has all the makings of a best-selling author. Few authors are adept at the short story form and it is especially pleasing to find such mastery in a relative newcomer to the scene. These finely-crafted tales are in a variety of genres and range from light humour to thought-provoking excursions into the supernatural. The plots are refreshingly different. I was particularly taken with The Roads Not Traveled with its unexpected ending, and very moved by Yesterday's Children. Every single one of them is good. The characters and dialogue are believable and the narrative is in a straight forward, uncluttered style which is eminently readable. The book would have benefited from stricter editing but otherwise this is a superb read. If you enjoy short stories, you will love this book. Highly recommended. This book came to me by way of the Goodreads First-reads Giveaway. I love that program! I have gotten to read a number of books I never would have otherwise.
This is a collection of very short stories, some are as short as one page, to as long a three or four pages. They are just wild tales of things that probably could never happen, but you wish they would, or think about or imagine.
I loved it! It was so neat, and it was a quick read. I started it in the afternoon and had it read before I went to bed. My daughter is now wanting to read it, and I am excited to let her.
I really enjoyed the collection of stories, all a little different, but the same in some respects. They all fit well in the book together, and I just kept reading. This was fun!
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Some were downright hilarious (Assailant), while others were just downright twisted (The Weed Whisperer) and made you shiver with the heebie jeebies. This collection is perfect for a person on the go because you can pull it out and easily read a story in 5 minutes while waiting in line at the grocery store, or just when you need a quick break. I recommend this book to anyone who likes quick, easy reads that range from hilarious to horror :)
