'Speckled Band' - was all that could be made out of the blood-curdling shriek of the woman who died an abrupt, unaccountable death at the dead of night. The murder as well as the mystery of the 'Speckled Band' remains unsolved till Sherlock Holmes takes it on. Other than the 'Mystery of the Speckled Band', The Best of Sherlock Holmes has in its armoury, five other mysterious stories - all testifying to the deftness of the peerless Mr. Holmes.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
The great novel made me read more of Sherlock Holmes. Again, I watched the movie before the novel. The good thing, the movie has nothing to do with this novel. I have always wanted to be like Sherlock Holmes, all his moves are so impressive. He remains the best unmasked superhero till date. This book is certainly worth reading for all Sherlock fans. And by the way, keep a dictionary, just in case!
