About the author

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator regarded as a key figure in Spanish-language and international literature. His best-known works, Ficciones (transl. Fictions) and El Aleph (transl. The Aleph), published in the 1940s, are collections of short stories exploring motifs such as dreams, labyrinths, chance, infinity, archives, mirrors, fictional writers and mythology. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and the fantasy genre, and have had a major influence on the magic realist movement in 20th century Latin American literature.
Born in Buenos Aires, Borges later moved with his family to Switzerland in 1914, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family travelled widely in Europe, including Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. He also worked as a librarian and public lecturer. In 1955, he was appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He became completely blind by the age of 55. Scholars have suggested that his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination. By the 1960s, his work was translated and published widely in the United States and Europe. Borges himself was fluent in several languages.
In 1961, he came to international attention when he received the first Formentor Prize, which he shared with Samuel Beckett. In 1971, he won the Jerusalem Prize. His international reputation was consolidated in the 1960s, aided by the growing number of English translations, the Latin American Boom, and by the success of Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. He dedicated his final work, The Conspirators, to the city of Geneva, Switzerland. Writer and essayist J.M. Coetzee said of him: "He, more than anyone, renovated the language of fiction and thus opened the way to a remarkable generation of Spanish-American novelists."

Este pequeño volumen escrito con cuatro manos, entre JLB y su compañera Maria Esther Vázquez, abarca de forma muy apretada la historia de la literatura inglesa, desde la remota época de Beowulf, pasando por William Shakespeare y John Milton, Samuel Taylor Coleridge y Thomas de Quincey, Robert Louis Stevenson y Joseph Conrad, G.K. Chesterton y William Morris, hasta los más recientes Virginia Woolf y James Joyce.

La vida y obra de cada unos de estos autores queda brevemente resumida en frases secas y vívidas, propias del estilo de Borges. En suma, este libro cumple plenamente con su promesa de “interesar al lector y estimular su curiosidad para un estudio más profundo”.

Historia y crítica literaria escrita con maestría y justeza. Es un libro que invita a indagar en en los autores que para Borges son los más importantes de Inglaterra. Pero para mi, fuera de Byron, Joyce y Eliot, los demás poco interés me despiertan.

This book is hard to judge. It is on the one hand too eccentric to be much of an introduction to English Literature, but its eccentricities (on the other hand) are its entire charm. Many of the anecdotes Borges has told before. I'm glad Thomas Browne and Lord Macaulay get their due, but the rise of the novel, which is certainly one of the two most important literary events of the 18th century, is more or less glossed over (the other one is Romanticism, and it, at least, is not).

Aw heck, it's a fun book. 4 stars.

Breve y muy interesante libro que no es otra cosa que lo que dice su título, una introducción a la literatura inglesa desde los bardos celtas hasta entrado el siglo XX. Es ilustrativo saber algo más de muchos autores que sólo conocía de nombre, no solo aspectos de sus vidas sino fragmentos de sus obras. Borges fue uno de mis ídolos de juventud y ahora su prosa me parece a veces rebuscada y pedante pero siempre estimulante. Y breve tenía que ser, pues nunca escribió una obra larga, acaso algunas ideas para novelas en unos pocos párrafos. Recomendable.

Me lo regalaron y decidí leerlo porque me encanta el tema y porque sólo tiene cien páginas, so no excuses. Está bueno como introducción, como dice el título, porque es muy sintético y sólo presenta a algunos autores y movimientos. Los mismos escritores lo aclaran en el prólogo.
Me sirvió para recordar que mi tema favorito es la época anglosajona y la invasión del 1066 :)

Jorge Luis Borges's "An Introduction to English Literature" is a brief account of the history of English Literature. He provides succinct overviews covering seven major periods: the Anglo-Saxon period, the fourteenth century, the age of the Theatre, the seventeenth century, the eighteenth century, the nineteenth century, and the twentieth century. The terse breadth of his analysis and recapitulation focuses on the major works and writers from each period. For example, in the age of the Theatre Borges analyzes Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe; in the fourteenth century he analyzes Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales; and so on.
As an example of Borges's brevity in this 72-page book, here is an excerpt of his summary for Virginia Woolf's work: "In Virginia Woolf's books, plot is less important than the changing states of consciousness and her delicate landscapes. Her style is at once visual and musical. She committed suicide by drowning herself in a river during the Second World War."
This is the first book I've read that surveys the history of English Literature, and it is a friendly book. It's approachable, digestible, and written with extreme delicacy and care. Borges even goes so far as to include a list of recommendations for those interested in further studying. I'll post that picture as well. :)
Even though it's the first book I've read on the subject, this was an effective introduction and has helped me understand how to navigate myself as I try and learn more about the history of literature. If you're interested in learning the fundamental history of English Literature in a brief but concise overview then check this book out.

Borges okumak çok farklı bir his, tarif edemiyorum, aynı hissi yaşayan ve gayet güzel tarif eden birisine/birilerine denk gelirim umarım. Dilimin ucuna gelen şeyler var ama ben Borges'i şöyle görüyorum demek pek haddime değil, tabii yine beni bağlayan, benim bakışımdır ancak "şu andaki" bakışımdır, zamanla doğrusunu öğrenirim, pekiştiririm, tamam budur derim o zaman buraya yazarım. öyle abuk sabuk değerlendirmeler görüyorum ki bazen bu nasıl bir cesarettir diyorum, iddialı bir okur bunu yapmamalı bence. içimizden geleni yazalım ama bu duygusal akış ile olmalı, bir yazarı, bir meseleyi yüksek özgüvenle donanımsız bir şekilde tarif etmek, yorumlamak ciddiyetsiz kalıyor ve dikkatli, bilgili okurun gözünden kaçmıyor, bunu fark edebilmek lazım.

Bilmediğim bir sürü şey öğrendim. Elbette adı üzerinde giriş niteliğinde, ön yazısında belirtildiği gibi hayli kompakt, detaysız ancak özet niteliğinde. Giriş niteliğinde okunup daha fazlasını merak edenler için ansiklopedi kalınlığında eserlerle devam edilebilir, ama bana yetti, daha fazlası konunun meraklısı, uzmanı, eğitim alanlar için bana kalırsa.

Borges’in İngiliz dilinin Cermen kökenlerine ilişkin açıklamasını okurken nedense aklıma gövdesi fil ve başı penguen şeklinde çizilmiş karikatür geldi. İngilizce için Joyce; “bu dilde yazmak zorunda kaldığım için” diyordu. Bugün İngiliz yazını ve dili hiç süphesiz dünya milletlerinin severek ya da zorunlu olarak öğrendikleri alanlar.

Kitabı okurken ilginç şeyler öğrendim. İngilizlerin Şark merakı ve eserlere yansıması. Anlaşılmaz eserlerinin yorumu için kurulan dernek toplantılarına katılan yazarın herkesi yorum için yüreklendirmesi ama kendisinin yorum yapmaması...

Ben okudum ve sevdim. Daha ileri bir okuma istiyorsanız Türkçede Mina Urgan’ın eseri elbette İngiliz edebiyatı okumalarınızda ve öğrenmenizde daha sağlıklı bir yol çizmenizde fayda sağlayacaktır.

Un libro que abarca a los representantes icónicos de la literatura inglesa, siempre con esa conocida facilidad conversacional tan característica de Borges. En definirá, un manual imprescindible para aquel que quiera adentrarse en el mundo de la literatura inglés y no sepa por dónde comenzar.

La única crítica posible y lamentable yace en la escasez de escritoras inglesas representadas en este compendio. En definitiva, se extraña ver a las Wollstonecraft/Shelley (la hija, pero mucho más la brillante madre) así como a las hermanas Brontë y a Jane Austen. Una decisión bastante cuestionable, considerando su historia con las traducciones feministas censuradas de la obra de Woolf.

Un buen ensayo que hace un recorrido por la literatura inglesa, nada menos que de la mano del gran Borges. Lo que más me interesó de este libro es que no ahonda en géneros, escuelas, etc. sino que se centra directamente en los escritores y sus obras principales.

Es un libro pensado para lectores, no tanto para estudiosos de literatura ni filólogos. Pero que sirve para conocer (o recordar) a autores que a través de los años hicieron grande la literatura de lengua inglesa.

Un libro de referencia pensado principalmente para generar curiosidad y permitir acercarnos a esos textos maravillosos.

Borges no sólo introduce a la que, concuerdo con él, es una de las literaturas más hermosas del mundo, la inglesa, sino que apunta comentarios y anécdotas, tanto personales como históricas, que vuelven a este libro menos una clase teórica que una agradable charla veraniega; creo, simplemente, que hay una ligera omisión en escritores, pero ya se sabe que una antología que lo contenga todo ha perdido su encanto.

Un interesante breve recorrido por la historia de la literatura inglesa. Luego podrá hacerse un análisis (y crítica) que sólo Woolf y Sackwille-West fueron mencionadas como autoras inglesas importantes (ni siquiera mencionan a Bronte, Austen y Shelley, por dar algunos ejemplos).
