Sisters of the Quilt contains When the Heart Cries, When the Morning Comes, and When the Soul Mends. When it is possible, I choose books that contain the complete story in one volume, because I get impatient waiting for the next book in the series to arrive.
What would you do if something out of your control happened, but no one believed you, not your family, not your friends, not your pastor? Hannah Lapp, a 17 year old Old Order Amish girl, was faced with this dilemma, and chose to leave every thing she knows and loves to start a new life.
I loved watching Hannah as she grew in the gifts God had given her. I don’t know if I could be as strong as she was, but her resolve to move on, and put the old behind her, helped her as she grew in her faith, and to forgive those who had hurt her. But more importantly to begin to build bridges between her past, present, and future.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, and would recommend it to those who like Amish fiction, as well as, to those who have never read it before.
**Sisters of the Quilt~The Complete Trilogy by Cindy Woodsmall was provided for me free by WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
** spoiler alert ** My heart complete breaks and repairs through this book. This story is told giving perspective into many of the characters lives and it makes you look back on your own with perspective. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Imagine leading a plain, normal strict life, yet having a desire for a man you know will not receive approval in the eyes of your family your people and struggling to find a way. Then as everything looks like it will work out just find, you're raped by a stranger and nobody believes you. Then when you finally accept the reality of a pregnancy, you lose that too. Only through the grace of God can life be repaired.
Usually I despise books that leave things wanting, but this book was perfect. It ended at just the right time and I look forward to reading a sequel When The Morning Comes.
TALK ABOUT A CLIFF HANGER! Dudette, you can not just leave me hanging like this, I don't know how I'm suppose to make it to September! Ugh!
This book was really great, better than the first, and I really enjoyed that one. There is real issues that are tough on life and hard, but there is goodness. There are more characters to fall in love with in this book and the personalities are so real and so great, that you do not know who to love more as a reader and feel just as confused as the character and then realize the things that you know that she/he doesn't and your heart breaks for them, but you still do not know which would be better! I could not read this book fast enough to find out what happens and each part is really unexpected and fascinating. I earnestly cannot wait for the next book!
Wow. That is the main thought that I am left with after finishing this magnificent book. Cindy Woodsmall has done an amazing job with her debut series and I cannot wait to read more from this fabulous author. I enjoyed the first book and really was full of emotion for the characters. I cannot tell you how many times throughout the series I was brought to tears or screaming in anger when the characters would not for themselves.
When the Soul Mends is an incredible book about such depth with a vast amount of heart wrenching drama that is so real and so needed to be read. You could read this book alone, but I strongly suggest you start from the beginning, because only after going through When the Heart Cries to the When the Morning Comes can you really appreciate the beauty and fully healing affects of When the Soul Mends. Can you see how perfect these titles are?
I'm practically speechless, but I want to ramble about how great this book is. The characters are so real, as are their troubles and joys. Cindy really brings you into an Amish/Plain/Englisher world and shows the good, as well as the bad in all cases. After falling into their world in the first two novels and screaming for answers with the cliff hangers those two left me in, Cindy has answered everything in more depth and better than I ever could have imagined. I'm completely satisfied with this series and you can bet it is on my keeper shelf.
For the last three weeks I've been immersed in the world of Hannah Lapp, an Amish teenager whose story was conceived by Cindy Woodsmall and retold in her trilogy "Sisters of the Quilt."
Hannah's story was originally divided into three books: "When the Heart Cries," "When the Morning Comes," and "When the Soul Mends," but all have been included in the compilation "Sisters of the Quilt." I settled in to start reading the compilation, at first concerned about the 1000+ pages, but by the end of Book 1 was thrilled that I could continue reading Hannah's journey without interruption.
Hannah begins this journey as a free-spirited seventeen-year-old, slightly chafing under the restrictions of her Old Order Amish community, especially when the rules don't allow her to openly pursue her budding romance with the neighbor's Mennonite grandson. Suddenly her world collapses as Hannah is the victim of a brutal attack by an Englischer (an outsider); her family and community suspect that Hannah is more willing participant than victim, and rumors swirl about her character.
Hannah's pain and sense of abandonment compel her to leave home and seek refuge with an aunt that had been shunned by the community thirty years before. While her friends and family struggle with Hannah's disappearance, she begins the painful journey of rebuilding her life and her sense of self-worth. Along the way she follows her childhood dreams and builds strong relationships in the outside world.
Her carefully constructed new life begins to crumble as Hannah is drawn back into her old community to help her sister, who had never been able to come to grips with the role she had played in Hannah's downfall. Will Hannah choose to rejoin the community, or cut the ties that bind her to the old ways?
I have long enjoyed reading Amish fiction and have always finished each book with a feeling of serenity and a yearning to be a better person. Although the end result was the same with this book, the emotional journey it took me through was much more painful. Unlike other Amish books I've read, this one dealt with much deeper issues: mental illness, rape, and medically-mandated birth control...all issues that the Ordnung (rules of conduct) of the Old Amish Order find difficult to deal with.
The rigidity and lack of compassion by the community when faced with these issues was troubling to me...so much so that at one point I found myself sobbing in compassion during one scene. I can't remember the last time that I felt so emotionally invested in a book's character, and the fact that I did in this case is a testament to the skill of the author.
Don't get me wrong...the subjects were dealt with in a very tactful manner; if this were a movie it would have earned a mild PG rating. Since I expected a more G-rated version that is typical Amish fare, I was surprised and impressed that this author delved deeper into the human psyche and the expectations and customs of the Amish community in turmoil.
If you enjoy Amish fiction, you will definitely love this book.
NOTE: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review.
An incredibly emotional read, that had me glued to the page from page 1 to 1,000. (This is a 3-in-1 Omni-bus).
One of the happiest days of Hannah Lapp's life quickly takes a dark turn, when she is attacked by an Englisher, leaving Hannah shattered. In the Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy friendships are tested, jealousies are aroused, prejudices are formed, while lies run rampant, yet nevertheless hope remains.
Wow, this book, or rather trilogy, is probably going right to the top of my list of favorite Amish books! Written in an easy to read style that allows the reader to get "lost" in the story, Ms. Woodsmall has outdone herself with this powerful series. I found that I simply couldn't put the book down, which led to my staying up to ridiculous hours--but I just had to find out what happened next! Which was one of the things that I loved about having all three books at my finger-tips!
I loved how many story lines there were in the story, and how they connected, separated, and then intertwined again, and I got really got to "get inside" a host of characters and got to see what made them tick.
All of the characters were wonderfully developed, my favorite character ended up being a side character, named Matthew. I like Matthew because he was the kind of guy who always put others before himself, even if it ended up not looking so good for him later on. Matthew was also a man of honor, who was just totally nice, but knew when to put his foot down. The few times that he got frustrated, I didn't blame him, because I totally believed that he had every right to be upset. He was definitely an awesome guy :)
Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this book. The characters, the plot, the emotional depth--all of it was so well done. One thing that I will mention is that the series starts with a violent scene very near the beginning Another thing that I would like to mention is that the three books flowed from one to the other seamlessly, as if they had been published all in one huge volume from the get-go, each book picking right up where the last one had left as if it were only the next chapter instead of the next book! Sisters of the Quilt is an Omni-bus that you will not regreat picking up!
Final Rating: 5.2 out of 5
I received this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. Thanks!
I began this trilogy with the intent to only read the first book, "When the Heart Cries." It was recommended by a friend but I wasn't really "feeling" it. I wanted to at least finish the first book as a valiant effort. However; even though each page was almost unbearably cheesy and predictable, I found myself unable to put it down. I just HAD to find out what was going to happen next. So, 900 pages later, I have finished all three stories. Everything played out ALMOST as I had anticipated, I learned more about the Old Order Amish and Mennonite beliefs, and I am no worse for the wear. Will I be reading anything more from this author? Probably not.
I loved this book! Author, Cindy Woodsmall, has a way of letting the reader see into the heart and soul of her characters. “Sisters of the Quilt” is a bind-up of: “When the Heart Cries”, “When the Morning Comes” and “When the Soul Mends”. The first book was heart wrenching and yes, it brought on tears. There is tough subject matter and gives a glimpse inside an Old Order Amish Family and their culture. Hannah the main character suffers terrible things. I found myself suffering along with her and turning the pages until a very satisfying ending. If you pick this up you won’t regret it. ❤️
Trigger warning: No graphic details but there are triggers in this book
When the Heart Cries is the first of the Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy. Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forget baptism into the faith, and marry outside the community. She’s been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.
When the Morning Comes is the second book in the Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy. Her relationship with former fiance Paul Waddell in ruins, Hannah Lapp fled her home in hopes of finding refuge with another Amish outcast, her shunned Aunt Zabeth in Ohio. Hannah had difficulties because of her limited education and hiding her true identity, Hannah struggles to understand the confusing world of the Englischers and get used to unfamiliar freedoms, but a close friendship with the handsome Martin Palmer renews her courage to face the future.
When the Soul Mends is the third and final book of the Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy. After receiving a desperate and confusing call from her sister, Hannah Lapp reluctantly returns to the Old Order Amish community of her Pennsylvania childhood. Having fled in disgrace more than two years earlier, she finally has settled into the Englischer world. She also has found love and a new family with the wealthy Martin Palmer and the children she is helping him raise. But almost immediately after her arrival in Owl’s Perch, the disapproval of those who disowned her, including her father, reopens old wounds. As Hannah is thrown together with former fiancé Paul Waddell to work for her sister Sarah’s mental health, hidden truths surface about events during Hannah’s absence, and she faces a difficult decision. She has to choose her English boyfriend or her old Mennonite fiancé. She ends up choosing the Mennonite way and becomes married to Paul Wadell, her long lost love.
"Sisters of the Quilt--The Complete Trilogy" by Cindy Woodsmall contains the books "When the Heart Cries", "When the Morning Comes", and "When the Soul Mends". Each book details a portion of the life story of Hannah Lapp, a young Amish woman whose life is forever altered by a brutal attack. In "When the Heart Cries", Hannah is only seventeen years old when she faces something no woman should have to face: sexual assault. With her world turned upside down and her faith in question, her pain is compounded by a lack of understanding from her fiance and her own family. Through others, she learns how to deal with such crippling pain and once again finds strength in her faith. In "When the Morning Comes", Hannah must deal with rejection by her family and community. The outside world offers a refuge, and painful truths about her old life become apparent as she starts her life anew. Her struggles to survive in an almost alien world are mirrored in the struggle of her family and friends to deal with the aftermath of her departure. In order to help her sister, Hannah returns to the Old Order Amish community in "When the Soul Mends". When the truth about her former fiance is finally revealed, Hannah must once and for all decide the path her life will take. Can she live with the dictates of the old ways, or will the freedoms she has found outside the Amish community, and the love of a good Englischer man, take her away forever? Each of these books is such a worthy read on its own, but the three stories together in one big volume really draw the reader deeply into the trials and joys of Hannah Lapp's life. A very worthwhile investment of time that will leave you touched and fulfilled as a reader. Highly recommended!
Wow! Wow! Wow! I couldn't put this book down. Seriously read it in under 36 hours... I was not expecting such an intensity of modern day drama/trials entangled in an Amish setting. The authoress pulled me in instantly-- and had such a way of captivating the plot in 5 words or less. An extreme page turner! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this series in one full swoop. (3/4 of the combined book moves along quite quickly, with the last 1/4 coming to a slower full circle ending. Characters, plot, & writing style was well thought out.) A definite keeper. **Christine if you haven't read this already, I know you will LOVE this one!!**
This trilogy was more than I expected. It follows the life of Hannah, an Old Order Amish teenager, through a variety of life challenges. Hannah's inner strength, beliefs, and resiliency are illuminated throughout the book. As her story unfolds, so does detail about life in an Old Order Amish Community. For me, that was as captivating as the story itself since I love learning about other cultures. I highly recommend this trilogy to readers interested in personal journeys and those interested in opening their eyes to other ways of life.
When I first started reading it, I really had a hard time with the rape that occured in it and the emotional outcomes that were involved. As I continued to read and especially the last book, I really enjoyed the faith involved in the story. That through faith and a knowledge of a loving Heavenly Father you have the strength to not just make it, but really overcome so much. There are mutiple stories that are woven throughout the story and all of them are show this theme. It's nice to read something that while hard, shows faith and love.
Cindy Woodsmall does it again. Loved this trilogy. Woke up in the middle of the night thinking about what was happening in the story. I couldn't go back to sleep until I got up and read for 3 more hours. Excellent insight into the frailties of the human spirit, and the strength that we all have to overcome the challenges that we all face.
I am not a huge fan of inspirational novels. THe first book in the series was a book club choice. After reading it, I was hooked and read the next two in about 5 days! A good story about the power of forgiveness and God's ability to redeem.
I loved this book a lot! I was worried it was going to be a bit dry and slow but I couldn't put it down. The author does such a great job of loving the Amish way and disliking it at the same time. Amazing story and very well written!
I just couldn't put this book down. I flew through 1,000 pages over about 4 days. I loved learning more about the Amish community, but it was really about so much more. I'm not sure what to say except that I loved, loved, loved it!
This is a series you have to read completely to know fully what happens while there is 3 books in the series if you read the 1st one then you are left not knowing what happens so it not stand alone books it a trilogy
So let me start off by saying that the first book was a 4-4.5 star.
Second book was a 5 star.
Third book was a 2-3 star.
This trilogy could’ve been an entire book less. Too many descriptions that didn’t lead to anything. Meaning the author pretty much described the sky and it took four paragraphs up to do so. I don’t mean that rudely.
I found the author liked to also describe a situation, but then in the next chapter, she would have the character think about that situation she just overly described. I’m not sure if what I’m saying is making sense, but it was a lot of repeated things. First something would happen, it was explained and described - and then the character would think back on it and it would get described again.
This, sadly, made me lose interest in the last book. It felt uneventful. I skipped the last few chapters and went straight to the last chapter and got what I needed.
First and second book we’re great, but the last book really sort of died off my interest.
I bought this book in 2015 for my mom but she passed away before I could give it to her. For some reason she was drawn to the Amish stories.
This was an easy read - kind of an "Amish does Jane Austin" story...tragic events, two people who keep getting their wires crossed (some times it stretched plausibility), and a satisfying resolution.
The trilogy is a big book, not good for traveling with. Somehow I just could not imagine reading this on my Kindle - maybe the topic was a factor...no good Amish would ever touch a Kindle!!
I thought the first book, When the Heart Cries, was a little slow to get started and the writing was just okay. The second book, When the Morning Comes, really drew me in. The storylines were more captivating and I started feeling the need to know what was going to happen. The last book, When the Soul Mends, seemed predictable but overall I enjoyed it. As a whole, the trilogy was pretty good and I would recommend it to others.
The Power of this story is unbelievable, I started reading and hated putter it down! The series of books wonderfully outlined the harsh realities of real life and showed God at work through all the darkness as He brought it all into His light! The truth will stand when the world's on fire!
Marvellous! And I have to come back on what I wrote before about christian messages in this type of books. Sure they are there and I don't like them, but Woopdsmall made it acceptable for me, the more through her so much wanted ending! Ooh I enjoyed this~!
I couldn’t put the book down. Your detail into the life style was great. I’m looking forward to reading more. I’ve always been interested in Amish life. I find them hard working and gentle people. The produce and stuff they make to sell one has to cherish.
One of the most amazing books I have ever read. The story is captivating, and makes you feel like you are standing right beside the main character, going through all of it with her. Definetely my favorite thrilogy of all times. <3
The book I am reading has all three books in one. I find it much easier to review the book after each individual book is complete. There are three books in this series, this is book 1.
According to Goodreads:
Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forgo baptism into the faith, and marry outside the cloistered community. She’s been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.
On the evening of their engagement, tragedy strikes and in one unwelcome encounter, all that Hannah has known and believed is destroyed. As she finds herself entangled in questions that the Old Ways of her people cannot answer, Hannah faces the possibility of losing her place in her family, in her community– and in the heart of the man she loves.
My heart went out to Hannah Lapp in this book. On top of her brother and dearest friend being in a horrible accident, the unmentionable happened to her as well. I couldn't imagine not being able to tell someone about it for the fear of being shunned. They leave everything in God's hands. What happened to Hannah? How does she cope with it? Does her love, Paul Waddell find out? How does he take the news? To find out what happens to Hannah, read When the Heart Cries.
** When the Morning Comes, is book #2 in The Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy. If you have not read the first book, you may not want to read this review**
If you read book #1, When the Heart Cries, you are aware of the situation surrounding Hannah Lapp. You already know that she was raped and became pregnant. You also know that she gave birth too early for her baby to survive. Once her fiancee, Paul found out; he thought she cheated and he left her. Leaving Hannah feeling like she had no other choice, she leaves the only home that she has ever known in search of an aunt that she has never met.
In book #2, When the Morning Comes, we follow Hannah's journey in her search to find her aunt. Her struggles of losing Paul remain a constant battle. Not only did she find her Aunt, she also became good friends with an Englischer, Martin Palmer. In the mist of all this, Martin's sister leaves town; leaving Hannah and Martin to care for her two children. In the mist of all that's going on, Hannah recieves a call from her sister. There has been another accident and she needs to come home. Meanwhile back home Paul is regretting jumping the gun on what he found out about Hannah. He wants to find her and make things right. Will Paul have the chance to do so? Will Hannah's and Martins relationship come to an end? Will she be rejected when she goes home? To find out read, When the Morning Comes.
This is a truly remarkable trilogy. I have found it very difficult to stop reading. I must say, I was not happy with the way things ended with Paul and Hannah. However, I feel Martin has been very good for her and he is just what she needs. I am curious to see who she ends up with. Will it be Martin? Paul? I am so mad at Paul for jumping the gun, but I guess I can't blame him. I really hope that Hannah and Paul both find the happiness that they deserve, whether that is together or separate. I have already started reading the final book and I am anxious to see what happens.
I rate this book 5/5!! Must read!
**This is the final book in the Sisters of the Quilt Trilogy. If you have not read the first two books in the series, I recommend not reading this book review**
Book 2 ended with Hannah receiving a phone call from her sister Sarah to come home. Upon receiving that phone call she returns to the place she once called home. When she got there, she was not expecting what to find. Her sister was thought to have started a series of fires. Truth is, Sarah just hasn't been the same since the day she found out that Hannah had a baby and that the baby died. Hannah expected to run into her ex Paul, but she wasn't expecting to find out the truth about why he never returned her phone calls years ago. Hannah, desperate to get her sister professional help, works with Paul to do so. Meanwhile, Martin doesn't understand why Hannah left her old life behind just to go back where she wasn't wanted. Her frequent trips put a strain on their relationship. What will happen to her relationship with Martin? Will all of her old feelings resurface for Paul? To find out what happens, read the final book When the Soul Mends.
I read this book in less than 24 hours. I just couldn't put it down! I felt like I really knew the characters, that I have been a friend of theirs for years. I could feel their anger, sorrow, joy, triumph, tears, and laughter. I was a little worried that she would turn her back on Paul. However, I was very happy with how things ended between Martin and Hannah. I was even more pleased to find out she was still able to see the children. This book brought out so many emotions. I am thrilled that Hannah and Paul ended up together.
