The Tree: Micro-Stories from ESL Students

This book is a tribute to incredible English students

Given COVID-19 restrictions, education systems around the world were greatly affected. More than that, students' lives were affected. This book takes a classroom exercise and turns it into a happy exclamation putting a positive spin on a difficult year.

In March 2021, I asked my English students to begin class by writing a 7-sentence story, beginning with the The Tree. We discussed the stories in class, pointed out common mistakes and how to correct them... all via video-conference, because that's how classes were largely being delivered.

About the Authors

In addition to my own micro-story, 50 other students opted to lend their voices to this collection. The students are part of the Performing Arts Program at l'Université de Poitiers (Poitiers, France) and with all but 1 exception, they are part of the first year class of 2020-2021.You'll read stories expressing wonder or humour, recalling childhood memories and promoting environmental awareness. Such is the wonder of working with students... the stories are as unique as they are.

Educational Value

Large compositions can be intimidating for second language learners, so this offered them a chance to view a composition as something achievable. From this common starting point, we could give them an opportunity to both express themselves as individuals, as well as improve their linguistic skills.Compiling their micro-stories into a book form gave them a unique goal to work toward, motivating them, while adding an element of fun - as well as the notoriety of seeing their names in print.
