RED SONJA: SHE-DEVIL WITH A SWORD Omnibus 2 is a work that follows up our heroine destroying the cult of the god who destroyed her family only to reveal that it had always been worshiping KULAN GATH! Yes, the villain that has become Red Sonja's archnemesis from the old Conan: The Barbarian comics the way that Kingpin became Daredevil's archnemesis. Kulan Gath is treated very strangely here as he's treated much more as a god rather than a wizard and is apparently is formerly Scathach's lover. Also, it states that Red Sonja is a reincarnating demigoddess made from Kulan Gath's blood to oppose him.
All of which I kind of hate.
Not my favorite of the works but the ending is very powerful.
This collects quite a number of issues of Red Sonja. I enjoyed this, but it didn't blow me away. This is a fairly typical version of Red Sonja: a lot of swords and sorcery action and unlike Gail Simone's newer Red Sonja, Sonja is a fairly reserved adventurer, as people have often written her. I found it sort of odd that she was surrounded by male companions pretty well constantly and the particular plot of the bulk of this involves her connections with some gods, and frankly that got a little tedious, especially the long part at the end. But, basically, speaking, it was fun, if a little bit lacking in depth or characterization. The art was lovely and the plot moved along well. The action sequences were generally clear and easy to follow. It was a pretty quick read, but on the whole, I enjoyed it.
The world presented in Dynamite's Red Sonja series bears little resemblance to the one shown in the Roy Thomas comics (which itself was a bit distanced from Robert E. Howard's original vision of the Hyborian Age), but if purism isn't a concern, this continues to be a fun fantasy series with beautiful artwork. The Kulan Gath storyline is wrapped up a bit abruptly, and there are some equally sudden character deaths, but I'm interested to see where the story goes.
