Thematic analysis - a process for encoding qualitative information - can be thought of as a bridge between the languages of qualitative and quantitative research. This book helps students and researchers understand thematic analysis as a process that is a part of many qualitative methods, and provides clear guidance about learning to develop techniques to apply to research. The book shows how one can sense themes - the first step in analyzing information - as well as how to develop codes through the use of numerous examples from different research settings.

About the author

Richard E. Boyatzis is a professor in the organizational behavior, psychology, and cognitive science departments of Case Western Reserve University and in the human resources department of ESADE. Using his Intentional Change Theory (ICT) and complexity theory, he continues to research sustained, desired change at all levels of human endeavor: individuals, teams, organizations, communities, countries, and global change.

Boyatzis has authored or coauthored more than 125 articles on leadership, competencies, emotional intelligence, competency development, coaching, and management education. His books include Becoming a Resonant Leader (Harvard Business Review Press, 2008), coauthored with Annie McKee and Fran Johnston; Resonant Leadership (Harvard Business Review Press, 2005), with Annie McKee; Primal Leadership (Harvard Business Review Press 2002), with Daniel Goleman and Annie McKee; and The Competent Manager (Wiley, 1982).

Boyatzis has a BS in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT and an MS and a doctorate in social psychology from Harvard University.

This book was supposed to help me understand coding & theming more for my grad school class. All it really did was make me feel completely inferior and made my head feel like it was going to explode every time I had to open it up.

What's not to love? A pleasant read, and to the point. Explains a process I had more or less been doing all along, but without so much deliberate precision.

Not an introductory text. If you want to take your qualitative research to the next level, this is an excellent resource. Dr. Boyatzis writes in an approachable style.
