A Knight in Central Park

Rate this book
The year is 1499. As Alexandra Dunn’s farmhouse is set ablaze, her grandfather places precious stones in her palm, telling her she has until the next full moon to return with a hero...a brave, chivalrous knight to help save her family. Familiar objects become a blur as she is swallowed in darkness. Suddenly Alexandra is standing in the middle of Central Park, but she has no time to ponder on the wondrous powers of the stones or the amazing sights before her...she must find a hero before all is lost. Joe McFarland would be the first to admit that he’s far from hero material…definitely not the man she’s looking for. A firm believer of quietude and non-violence, he avoids conflict at all costs. At thirty-four, he is one of the younger Professors at NYU where he lectures and teaches The High Middle Ages. Joe’s main goal in life is to gain membership into the Medieval Academy, a highly distinguished group of archaeologists and historians. He believes membership will bring him respect and recognition…but what he really wants is to be reunited with his father; a man who has spent his entire life searching for the Black Knight, the last of the medieval knights. Joe’s organized, well-structured life begins to unravel the moment he meets Alexandra Dunn. He figures she majored in medieval history before going off the deep end…until days later when he is miraculously transported through time, to 1499 England. Dressed in Dockers and a button down shirt, Joe thought he was ready for anything...anything but this! An armored man with a very authentic looking broadsword is about to strike him down. With only nail clippers and a Bic to defend himself, Joe has no time to think about such an implausible phenomenon as traveling through time…not if he wants to live to see another day. 390 pages ABOUT THE AUTHOR Theresa Ragan is a member of The Golden Network and the Sacramento Chapter of RWA. Very lacking. I bought this for a quick escapist read in between some heavy novels that I took on because the premise sounded interesting and fun. What I got was a few hundred pages of blather and a lingering irritation at having wasted hours in this book.

Nothing was well executed. I couldn't connect with Joe and Alexandra at all, especially Joe. Joe was whiny and pathetic, and for someone who dedicated this life to the study of medieval England, he really lacked imagination. He reminded me of those people who claim to *love* traveling and experiencing new cultures, but once they actually get there and start walking around the streets, they start to complain about the heat, or the food, or the unfriendly locals. At least they have some excuse, I guess, of not knowing what to expect. Joe has NO EXCUSE. He is a scholar of the time period, for frig's sake! All he really noticed were the layout of some villages and how dirty the people were, which I suppose I can sympathize with, but after the first three times of him complaining, I wanted to shove his face into a pile of manure.

****SPOILER ALERT****

Also, the plot was a huge let down. Despite the sad lack of characterization, unrealistic portrayal of medieval England, and Joe and Alexandra's tendency to fall asleep in the woods without getting eaten by hungry wolves, I trudged through, optimistically hoping that the story would take a turn for the better. Not only was I disappointed, I almost gave up on the novel altogether.

Before I go on further, I need a moment to breathe in and preface my analysis of the "plot" with one question: Really? REALLY?!

The man you spend demonizing for 4/5 of the novel actually is the good guy? And the two random bumbling soldiers who were dumb enough to drink from a stranger's wine goblet were the true villains? That just destroys any shred of credibility that remained for the heroes of the story. Also, that they missed a crucial message by days that would have prevented such a wild goose chase really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Actually, that captures what this story was, in sum: a wild goose chase.

If you want good time-travel fiction, I suggest looking elsewhere.

I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me just a little bit of Outlander with the time travel but that's where the comparison ends. The characters were interesting, Alexandra especially. The story moved along and it is the first book in quite a while that I did not want to put down. I even laughed several times.

A very good read. Humorous, a page turner from start to finish. Theresa Fagan developed her charactors with safistication humor. I could just see

see the young siblings of Alexandra with their expressions of disbelief at Sir Joe. A very enjoyable read. Thank you Theresa.

Very Nice Surprise

I have come to like “time travel” books and I stumbled across a couple of T.R. Ragan books, this one and “Before the Rose”. They are both well written (with NO TYPOS, which is darn near unheard of to me) and uplifting. I have never read a romance novel before so I don’t know if they are typical of that category. I think they aren’t ... maybe more of a couple of uplifting stories that makes you feel good and just good olé uncomplicated light enjoyable reading. I read a lot. Sometimes I want deep reading and other times I don’t. They are “Happy Books” that made me smile.

Have it in Audio
This is a time travel listen.
The heroine is from Medival times that needs help against the Kings men. The hero is set in modern day . He lives in New York . Out of the blue the heroine shows up right in front of him and she is flooded. She sees bicycles , tall buildings. She doesn’t know how to convince him what she says is true

This was my least favorite book by Theresa Ragan (aka: T.R. Ragan). I very much liked her other romantic time-travel book, "The Return of the Rose", and this one was of similar ilk, albeit to my mind, not as well written. There was just so much hand-wringing angst and sexual tension between Joe and Alexandra that, quite frankly, it tended to bore me. I kept thinking "Enough already, move on with the plot". The reader is well aware that Joe wants very much to go home but is also falling in love with Alexandra, who we come to find out is pregnant with his child, which further complicates matters and ends with a bit of a twist. Not Ms. Ragan's best effort but still a decent read.

A book about a different kind of knight that I'm sure you'll enjoy

As with all time traveled books People discover a new in different life. At the main character Joe, Thought he wanted 1 thing when afterwards he realized he wanted something that was new in different strengths as in a world. As I read this book I went through many emotions Happy, laughing, sad but I still read it to the very end with a very happy ever after.

I couldn’t finish this book. I’ve picked it up a couple of times and tried to get through it, but I just didn’t find the storyline believable. And I’m big fan of time travel and alternate history and fantasy novels so I don’t have a problem suspending belief in order to find a story enjoyable. This one however, was boring.

Very good

This story is very sweet and a bit predictable. I enjoyed the characters and the story. I always get a picture in my head of what each person looks like. I like the thought of all the red hair. I wonder what their babies will look like. Happy Reading.

I read this book as part of a book club that I have the misfortune to be in. Let's just say I am pushing for something better for the next meeting! If you are thinking of picking this book up DON'T!! stay as far away from it as possible. Honestly reading the synopsis of the book gives all you need to understand the story, because you could probably fill in the holes better than the author does.

I honestly feel like this book should be given a half a star. Only because there needs to be if how ever slight recognition that she wrote a book. It felt like I was reading a time traveling version of twilight, minus the vampires.

I realize that it is a book about time travel so I will leave my nit picking about that alone, but come on seriously magical rocks? Plus his whole lack of skill in everything from the medieval period just hurt. So I won't even touch the time travel and historical issues that I have with this book!

Its about Alexandra who is supposed to be this strong charterer, travels to the future, to fulfill some prophecy that she and her whole village has known about her whole life. In order to save her village from an evil Lord who has stolen her sister. Alexandra I felt was not the strong women that the author was intending her to be, but then again it could have been my wishful thinking that she be one. She spends too much time telling us that she doesn't want a man that you know its not the truth, she such a shallow shallow shallow character, not as bad as Joe, but still pretty bad.

We meet our savior Joe after he hits her with his car in Central Park, because where else would a time traveling women from ENGLAND! land if not in the middle of New York City, sorry time travel issue right there. After Joe's assistant makes him take her to the hospital pay the bill and even house her for a little while we find out that Joe is an all out ass hat. Joe is not a hero, not a love interest, or a good guy. Joe is an asshole with daddy issues. His character development was just time spent on why the reader shouldn't like Joe, than making him a believable character in his many aspects in the story. Which were predictable and all around sucked!

For what ever reason the two end up traveling back to 1499 ENGLAND, to save her village all the while making sure that we understood that there was no attraction or heroics that were going to take place. Aside from the longing stares that were so much worse than the movie The New World with Colin Farrell and Christian Bale.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19z97t... take away the Pocahontas story but leave the longing stares and that's about how the book was)

Yes this is a romance novel so it has to have the one scene of passionate love making, I think at one point when Alexandra is in the future she "mistakenly" crawls into bed with a naked Joe, which of course leads to a predictable break up between him and a girl friend. than whilst they are in 1499 there is a love scene between the two of them. Well the author sure thought it was a love scene but instead what you get is two people camping and after making longing stares at each other fumbling and than a clear declaration that Joe pull out, which he doesn't. I might be wrong but rape is not sexy, rape is not love. I was highly disappointed that the "love" scene was in actuality one of rape. I almost put the book down there and wish that I had. It just got so much worse, including the fact that the mission was all just a big misunderstanding and once the grievances where explained they were fixed, like that would ever happen.

Predictably Joe goes home ( yes he travels back to the future) and spends the next month pining over that girl he raped in the woods, I mean Alexandra the love of his life. After finding a missing stone, a gag that the author sets up twice! I don't know if she forgot about the first stone or if she realized that trying to find a magical pebble is Central Park, after a 2 months (?) would be about as impossible as finding good character or story development in this novel. After his pining and finding the missing stone he goes back to the magical land of make believe, also known as this authors version of medieval Europe to finally be where he belongs. With his love, that he spent so much time telling us was crazy. Much to his disappointment she's getting married to some other bloke and goes in to stop it. Oh wait his mistake its not Alexandra but her sister who conveniently looks uncannily like her. HE CAN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE HER FROM A DISTANCE!!! How is that any way at all to show somebody that you are madly in love with them if you don't even know what she looks like? whatever in the end the black knight lives happily, at least it is assumed with his prego woman.

Terrible read! I wish I had the 4 hours back that it took from my life

I thought this was a cute romance novel. The story was nice - a modern day professor from New York City meets a young woman from 1499 and is drawn back through time with her. There were some inaccuracies that I picked up on as a New Yorker (the main character lived in a corner house with multiple floors on a professor's salary in Manhattan? His next door neighbor had enough outdoor space for a greenhouse/garden? Just wouldn't happen... a house like that would be $10 million or so - maybe in Brooklyn it would work better! There just isn't any place like that near Central Park!) but overall the story was good. The main character's interactions were stilted at first but got better as the novel went along and their romance and how their relationship grew was very nice. I did think the ending was great but maybe should have been calculated better timing wise. The "logic" of the full-moon time travel and parallel times was fine but wasn't consistent throughout the novel.

This was a nice soppy time travel romance. I love this kind of tale after reading all the outlander series. I loved the story and the professor character came across well. He studied history all of his life but when it came right down to it he didn't understand it at all. And he definitely couldn't live it. So all he wanted was to get home again.
The heroine didn't ring true at all for me. Being taken from medieval England to present day should have been more of a shock I thought but she took it all in her stride as if it happens every day to someone. I thought more could have been made about her feelings for what she saw of modern life.
Saying that, I still enjoyed the book. it was a good afternoons read. A nice little romance

My reason for buying the book was because I had just read this authors "Abducted" which was definitely a 5 star read. I have several others to read of hers as well as I do think she puts a nice story together but maybe her thrillers are just that bit better.

Pick this up after being dissappointed with The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb - needed a romance or at least a lead character with emtions. So, far the book is what I hoped it would be. Funny, warm, and clever.

Finished the book and it was I hoped to be a light fun read after a disappointing book. It might not be the most in depth book out there but, it was good entertainment. I would be willingly to read another work from this author. Due to circumstances I read this book in a piecemeal fashion and not my ususally straight through.

As for the harshness of the reveiws I am not sure what they were expecting. I read this on my kindle for 99 cents so I wasn't expecting Les Miserables. I took the book an earnest attmept by a new author. In other words you really can't expect Gone With the Wind production values on a Plan Nine From Outer Space budget.

Alexandra Dunn, desperate to save her family in 1499, grasps hold of the magic stones her grandfather gave her and wishes desperately to find a knight to help her. She travels to modern times and lands in Central Park, where history professor Joe McFarland almost runs her down. Compelled to assist the confused woman, he brings her home. Convinced he’s the man destined to save her sister from a forced marriage, she tries to persuade him that she’s telling the truth. It’s only when Joe travels back with her to medieval times that he believes her. But how can a mild-mannered scholar fight against brutish armed men without any combat training and only his brain as a weapon? This lighthearted tale offers a pleasant escape if you’re a fan of this genre.

She has come thru time to New York city to find the Chosen One. The hero that will protect her family and help rescue her sister.
He is a modern day professor that has never been able to commit to love in any relationship. He is a neat freak who enjoys solitude.
She is convinced that he is the Chosen One and convinces him to return with her to the fifteenth century, the year 1499. Thus the adventure begins.

The book was written in a professional manner HOWEVER,
Too slow; the timing was off thereby removing what could have been a very passionate relationship.
Lacked the right amount of action to keep one's interest;
Three stars for effort but "somewhat" (not completely) boring.

Lame. Really lame. Yeah, we all know we read time travel historical romances prepared to "suspend disbelief" and enjoy the escapism...but this book is just so...."Yeah, right..." that you just keep getting yanked out of your Escapism Zone. Dirty heroine gets catapulted to current New York City Central Park courtesy of magic stones. OK. Gotta get the story started... Hero accidently runs into her with his car. OK. The real New Yorker Hero takes her to the ER, pays for her ER bill, and his teaching assistant moves heroine (who they had mistaken for a homeless lady) into his apartment because she had no where else to go.....definitely "Yeah, right..." Goes downhill from there.

I love time travel romance and this one was wonderful. It was both fun and entertaining. I loved Joe – poor, stubborn, neat-freak Joe. He found out the hard way that it’s one thing to study medieval history but it’s another thing altogether to live it. And I thought Alexandra was a good match for him. She was just as stubborn, and never gave up the belief that Sir Joe was the hero she was looking for, even if she had to teach him how to be one. I loved their interaction and the way they had to concentrate to not fall in love. And I also really liked the idea of magic stones for time travelling – I’m going to have to keep an eye out for some of them myself!

I have read fan fics written by teenagers written better than this one! I skimmed it and then at the end just read the last part of the last chapter to make sure I was right about the ending.

I kept wanting to like this. It could have been a really cute book, but just didn't develop well. I'm not an editor by any sense of the word, but it needed a LOT of proof reading and feedback to get the story going. And! they went from not standing each other to can't stand to be without the other in just one little paragraph. **eyeroll**

Predictable but sweet story. Problem was the details--far too many errors to take the rest of it even at face value. Example: "It's a good time, classes don't start until next week." followed immediately by "What about the student's papers I asked you to grade?" Really? What papers are you grading if classes haven't started yet? And don't even get me started on the history issues. . .

Ms. Ragan, you write well, you really do; but we're not stupid. Put just a little effort into this and you could have something really good.

There are several words to describe this book. In some ways it resembles a comedy, and at other times a parody. I wonder if the author wrote it as a joke to make fun of romance novels with the time travel theme. It was definitely different, and not really in a good way.

I noticed a couple of times where one of the characters would ask a question and it was 2 pages later when the other character would answer the question. I had to flip back to see what the original question was. (strange)

Not a great book, but not bad for $.99 on Amazon.

I'm glad I didn't pay for this book -- I couldn't finish it (it was free from Kindle). In fact, I doubt I got halfway through it before I stopped. It's a time-travel thing, but so poorly written, very predictable scenes. I really could not have cared less about any of the characters. What a waste of a few hours of reading ... Just glad I have a new attitude that allows me to stop reading stuff when I'm just not enjoying it, or it's so bad it doesn't warrant finishing! Moving on to the new Dave Robicheaux novel. That'll be good :-)

I loved the story line of this book, I loved the creativity, I loved the way the story evolved. I could have done without the explicit scenes, however. I saw this book and was intrigued so I purchased it to read. I was pulled into the story, being captivated by the creativity of the plot, however, was a tad disappointed when the explicit scene came into play near the middle of the book. I'm not one for explicit scenes in novels and this is the only reason I couldn't give this book a higher rating.

I am a sucker for time travel books so I thought this book might make a good quick read on a lazy day. How wrong I was! This book was such a train wreck that I kept on reading just to see how much worse it could get. There is a complete lack of historical research, absolutely no even remotely plausible explanation for the time travel, and no effort develop characters. The characters seem to have very little to say about their amazing circumstances. If I could give No Stars I would!

This was a cute read about a girl in 1499 who is taking care of her family consisting of her grandfather, brother and 3 sisters. While under siege, her grandfather gives her 5 stones. She is to go to a far away place and bring back a knight. When Alexander concentrates, she ends up in present day Central Park. She brings Joe, a college professor back to be their hero, but he is very reluctant.

Cute concept and a fun read.

Yikes, train wreck indeed. I got 40% of the way through before skimming the rest and calling it a day. Even for a kindle freebie it wasn't worth more time. The romance angle just seemed strange, and there are many irritating errors such as repeated changes of tense in one paragraph. My quick skim suggested that there's even a white wedding with what we know as the start of a wedding ceremony. Hmmm, I'm no history expert and didn't read it in full but???

I got sucked into this one because it was a Kindle bargain. I read good and bad reviews and decided to try it. I DO wish they'd rate the explicit sex in these novels. I read the first few chapters and encountered lots to offend, including a "medieval" miss who speaks understandable English (she wouldn't), and, unfortunately, explicit sex. The writing was less than engaging, with characters pretty predictable. I erased the book ASAP.
