This novel had a VERY promising beginning. However, it got bogged down in the middle, and then offered up one of the most unsatisfying endings I have ever read.

Have you ever gasped out loud from a book? Has a revelation in the story ever shook you to your core with a flood of emotions? Saying this book took me by surprise is a severe understatement.
Let me start by saying I’m Armenian. This should be irrelevant for a book about a British woman in London. But it’s not. When in the book they describe a magical, beautiful land of the protagonist‘s ancestors, and say it’s “between the Caspian and the Black seas” you know it literally has to be Armenia. Then they reveal that it’s Turkey......W.T.F. I was shook. Distraught.
So, i got off on the wrong foot with this book. If you know any geography you’ll know that that’s a blatant lie. I was so mad i wanted to write to the author to fact check the shit they write.
But then my heart softened and the ending literally left me in tears. I can’t say more for fear of spoiler but PLEASE I beg all of you to read this book. Especially if you are Armenian. Or Turkish. Or anyone 😂

A scented journey with all of Marc Levy's trademarks, from the plot to the poetic details, and characters. What I like about this book is the way he filled every pages with scents, I can see drops of them in the air, or feel them in my nose, all are very enjoyable imaginations. I even kinda fell in love with Istanbul, a place I've never known before. Humid London or colorful Istanbul, both were shown at an impressive level of vividness and beauty.
However I would not consider this as my favourite cup of tea. The story started out quite attractive and mysterious and kept us reading, but it got plain as it progressed. I mean it became predictable, and I see all familiar details everywhere. The behaviors of the characters, the thinking path, the letters between characters...they're just...there. Like all other books of him. After a while reading back and forth letters, I got tired and wanted to skip some pages and skim for details more than just description and daily life details. For me there was not a good tight knot, as I expected from Marc Levy's books. Maybe I'm being picky, but I don't feel enough with the ending, many parts are still unclear and, I feel like he rushed to the ending, without perfecting it. I think readers' patience would be tested, yeah, who wouldnt, if after 2/3 of the book having no clue of significant twist, and then everything was revealed and get done within the last 1/3? I didn't find any catch phrase to remember, as well as the logical reasons and new things to be amazed.
In short, rating for the writing skill that brings alive scenes and smells and tastes, but does not awake the feelings.

As a result she travels to Turkey with her friend and Neighbor Mr Daldry to find out if the fortune teller was right and that she’ll meet the most important person of her life there. What we don’t realize as readers is that there is so much more to the story.

Mis conocimientos de francés no son tan sólidos como para haber leído el libro en su idioma original y no conseguí la versión en inglés y siendo este uno de los libros elegidos de mi club de lectura tenía que tomar una decisión, así que en esta ocasión no sólo he leído en español, mi reseña por ende la escribo en el mismo idioma.
Intentando variar un poco el tipo de géneros literarios y ampliar el gran universo de autores que se dedican a la noble tarea de enriquecernos la mente con el don de la escritura, en esta ocasión he podido conocer un poquito del universo de Levy.
Más que una novela romántica, me atrapó la parte de ficción histórica, evocar un poco del universo de Alice y el sr. Daldry en la década de los 50, tan solo unos años después de la segunda guerra mundial. Alice tiene una vida, unos amigos, una profesión y todo parece llenarle, al menos hasta el momento en que con amigos hace un pequeño viaje a Brighton. Es allí que el rumbo de Alice se pierde puesto que una vidente le dice que habrá de conocer a 6 personas antes de poder llegar al hombre de su vida. Es a partir de entonces que Alice no encontrará sosiego y comenzará a tener una serie de sueños en los que evoca una serie de aromas que la llevarán a encontrarse a sí misma.
En compañía de su odioso vecino, el sr. Daldry, Alice iniciará un viaje que le llevará a Estambul. ¿Será que tal viaje le ayude a encontrar las respuestas a las interrogantes de sus sueños? Será importante entonces hacer la maleta y viajar en el tiempo para acompañar a Alice y su vecino en ese trayecto y encontrar junto a ellos tales respuestas.
Si la ficción histórica con toques de romance son de tu agrado, estoy seguro que disfrutarás de esta novela de Marc Levy.

I must preface my review of L'Etrange Voyage de Monsieur Daldry, by Marc Levy, by mentioning that I read this novel in French and not English, which may have partially influenced my rating. Nevertheless, I am leaving my review in English to ensure that more potential readers have access to this review.
Overall L'Etrange Voyage de Monsieur Daldry was a very entertaining read. The story was a bit of a slow burner (it took me perhaps 100+ pages to get into the narrative - perhaps this was due to the fact that I was reading in French which is a third language for me), and seemed deceptively predictable at first as a run-of-the-mill romantic adventure novel. Yet later I was pleased by a few unexpected plot twists which enhanced my curiosity to get to the end.
What I enjoyed most was the impeccable detail and sublime prose that Levy used in setting the scenes in the novel. In particular, he painted an exquisite portrait of Istanbul and its surroundings (which I'm yet to visit in my travels!) which clearly shows his intimate knowledge of this ancient world metropolis and Turkish culture. The final denouement was also very gripping and touching, in a way that I had not envisaged at the start of the novel.
Overall, I would recommend L'Etrange Voyage de Monsieur Daldry to anyone looking for an entertaining read. It is has a certain depth to it (i.e., it is not a typical predictable, happy-go-lucky romantic adventure novel), that is quite refreshing.

Charming story about a young woman who with the prophecy of a carnival boardwalk fortune teller, discovers she has a whole other life in a foreign country. The paces she goes through with her co- tenant in their apartment building is sweet and he ultimately accompanies her in her search. What is charming is that at first neither liked or thought any positive thing of one another and that all changes through the story.
As she researches information and feels a sense of familiarity in places in Turkey, she gets closer and closer to the truth of her childhood and family. And it’s horrible and sad, but yet there is also joy and happiness.
This was a lovely and interesting story and I loved the attraction of the fortune teller playing a prominent role in getting Alice out of her closed box of a living and instead get out there to discover new things, people and countries and the truth of her young life and make amends with some parts of her former life.
As she researches information and feels a sense of familiarity in places in Turkey, she gets closer and closer to the truth of her childhood and family. And it’s horrible and sad, but yet there is also joy and happiness.

Uncommitted at first but then fully invested!!!
The beginning wasn't sticky at all, and then it became pretty clear what the core story was. . .and even correct guesses didn't turn me away from staying engaged to the very last word.

They said this book is one of the best by Marc Levy. Sadly, to me, it's not.
The idea of this book is great, and the premise is kinda appealing. But as the story went on, I just felt like something had been missing, and not quite sure what it is, but the story just couldn't be emotional, heartrendingly beautiful as other genius, golden novel by this author that I really really adore, like "Où-es tu?", "La prochaine fois", "Si c'était vrai"... Maybe I love it more when his novels are set in contemporary time, and maybe Marc Levy's magic stopped working for me in this particular novel.
The ending, I may have guessed, so there was not a sense of surprise or lingering after the story ended. But I still gave this novel a 3 star rating because of its appealing idea, and the truth surrounding the female lead's past.

Despite being disappointed by the (IMO) anticlimactic ending between the two main characters, I truly enjoyed the vivid journey and it’s revelations. The author’s description of Istanbul painted a lovely picture in my mind, so much that I may take a trip there to see it firsthand.

This was such a fun story!
Alice Pendlebury has never been quite satisfied with her life. She loves working with perfumes, but she isn't quite sure how to turn it into a career. During an outing with her friends, they convince her to visit a psychic which she does reluctantly. The psychic tells her the most important man in her life was right behind her and that she'll need to undertake a journey to meet 6 people who will lead her to secrets about her past.
Alice is shocked and haunted by this prophecy. She's certain her parents never lied to her about her past, but they've also been dead for several years. She finds a peculiar ally in her neighbor, Mr. Daldry, whose always wanted her to quiet down and steal the skylight in her apartment. The two lonely souls trek back to the psychic on Christmas Eve together for more answers.
As they begin to spend more together, Mr. Daldry convinces Alice to take the psychic seriously. When he inherits a large sum of money, they come to an arrangement where he'll escort Alice to Istanbul for a time then borrow her apartment while she is gone. This was such a whirlwind of a story. I loved Alice immediately and as soon as they left for Istanbul I was swept away.
While there isn't any magic, the magic of Istanbul permeates every page. I fell in love with this place I'd never been. I never knew where the story was going to lead next and it absolutely captivated me! I really loved getting to know Alice and all the people she met on her journey. The ending was so so good too. I had tears in my eyes at certain reunions.

התקופה תחילת שנות החמישים באנגליה. אליס פנדלברי וחבריה יוצאים ליריד בברייטון, שם אליס תפגוש מגדת עתידות שתשלח אותה למסע אל העבר שלה בטורקיה ואל הגבר של חייה. אליס אינה מאמינה למגדת העתידות, הוריה נהרגו בהפצצות הבליץ במלחמת העולם השניה והיא גדלה אצל דודתה באנגליה. אליס שרוקחת בשמים כמקצוע, מתפתה לצאת למסע רק בזכות השכן שלה איתן דלאלדרי ובזכות סקרנותה.
הספר הזה פשוט מקסים. המסע והתוצאות שלו היו צפויות. בשלב מסויים גם הסקתי את הקווים הכלליים של המשך העלילה. אבל מה שהופך את הספר למקסים הן הדמויות של אליס ואיתן.
ההתקוטטויות המילוליות של אליס פנדלברי ואיתן דלאדרי משעשעות ולא אחת מצאתי את עצמי מגחכת בקול רם.
במקביל לקריאה באנגלית, קראתי אותו גם בעברית כדי להבין מדוע הספר הזה לא זכה להצלחה מסחררת בארץ. מסקרן הקול שיצא ממנכל הוצאת הספרים ידיעות למשתתפים בפייסבוק עוד במהדורה הקודמת עם השם הקודם שנבחר. לדעתי הכריכה הקודמת היתה טובה יותר למרות שהציבור לא אהב היא שיקפה טוב יותר את התוכן של הספר. למי שמעוניין הנה הפוסט והתגובות בפייסבוק-

הדבר הראשון שקופץ לי לראש היא הכריכה שנבחרה למהדורה בעברית. כריכה מיותרת בעיניי, לא ברור לי מי בחר את הציור הפרה רפאליטי כמקדם מכירות. מה שבטוח שהוא לא מזמין קוראים גברים מתחכם מידי ביחס לעלילת הספר ואין לי מושג אם הוא מושך נשים. גם בתגובה הראשונה שרואים בפייסבוק מעירים על כך.
גם התקציר בגב הספר לא עושה חסד עם הספר והעלילה שלו. "אליס שייכת למקום אחר. היא רואה אותו בחלומותיה, אך אינה יודעת היכן הוא נמצא. יש אי-שם גבר העתיד להיות המשמעותי בחייה, אך הוא נותר מחוץ להישג ידה. " אליס לא שייכת למקום אחר, את רוב חייה היא בילתה באנגליה mind u היא בת 40 כמעט והיא לא זוכרת דבר מהעבר שלה כילדה כך שזו אמירה ממש מטופשת. נכון יש גבר שאמור להיות משמעותי בחייה אבל זה לא לב העלילה ואפילו סיפור צדדי בה.
בנוסף, התרגום לעברית נעשה מצרפתית ולא מאנגלית ומרגישים בזה. אני חושבת שכשהוא תורגם לעברית הוא עוד לא תורגם לאנגלית. אני לא יודעת אולי בגלל שהספר יצא לאור בעברית בשנת 2003 (אם אני לא טועה), בקריאה הוא מקרטע. הרבה מושגים ומונחים בו לא מתעכלים כמו שצריך ומזקינים את הדמויות. כל השיח שלהם נראה קצת ארכאי בשימוש במושגים כמו ארוחת מינחה, או הצמחיה תלבלב. אבל, יתכן שזה רק נראה לי כך כי אנחנו 15 שנים אחרי שהספר תורגם. אולי בזמנו כן השתמשו בתרגום שהופך את כל האינטראקציה בין הדמויות למליצית וארכאית.

This is my second Marc Levy and it definitely won’t be my last. The central character is Alice who was a ‘nose’, someone who had an acute sense of smell and created perfumes. The time period is 1950/51 and the setting is London and Istanbul. Alice’s parents were killed in the Blitz and she lived alone in a light airy apartment. The story centred around a prediction from a fortune teller she visited in Brighton on a day trip with her friends. She was told she would meet 6 people before she met an important man who was just behind her in Brighton. A most intriguing riddle and a further visit led to the revelation that she needed to go to Istanbul.
Alice’s neighbour was Mr Daldry who was an artist. After an unpromising start they became friends. These two characters were fabulous and so easy to picture. I found myself rooting for the pair of them to become a couple which seemed to be most unlikely as they declared undying friendship. There were some beautifully described and very powerful dream scenes that Alice suffered following her visit to the fortune teller. Following a surprisingly generous bequest in his fathers will Mr Daldry offered to take her to Istanbul to aim to solve the fortune tellers puzzle.
Most of the remainder of the book centred on Istanbul and Alice’s efforts to solve the prediction which, after many wrong turns she was able to do and she also learned about her origins. She would have been unable to achieve this without the generosity of the divine Daldry and the services of a Turkish guide Can (‘the best guide in Istanbul ‘!). Can was also a fantastic character. His mastery of English was such that he was able to trick Daldry into thinking that his skills were less than they were and there were some touchingly funny expressions that Can came out with. I loved the journeys around Istanbul that Alice made which were beautifully described. Daldry left Istanbul after a while and I loved the letters that passed between them. I enjoyed the sections where Alice pursued her search for aromas around Istanbul and I liked the images of the art that Daldry produced. I felt the book was perhaps a bit too long hence the 4 rather than 5 stars but it was beautifully written and a pleasure to read. The ending was everything I hoped for.

OMG I loved this book
I loved it. I loved the premise and both hero and heroine were my catnip. I supposed the main outcome pretty early on but I am a hardcore romance reader; what I loved was the small twists and turns along the way and the thesis on love and independence. I also could smell, taste and feel Istanbul. Bonus points for a stopover sequence in Vienna!
I loved it! I LOVED the cerebral banter between Daldry and Alice and I loved how slowly the threads of Alice's history intertwined with the romance still evading her at 39. And yes, she is 39 and desirable and not on the shelf!

Started off good but at chapter four I really lost interest. I might try this again but I doubt it. Slow, and the characters annoyed me. 2.5 stars.

Ça se lit bien, c’est fluide… mais c’est un scénario un peu trop « hollywoodien » à mon goût. C’est plein d’invraisemblables et de facilités.
Honnêtement, je suis capable personnellement d’avoir du plaisir à lire un livre malgré les invraisemblances, mais dans ce cas-ci, la quête d’identité d’Alice m’était d’un désintérêt total. En plus, je ne me suis attachée à ni l’un ni l’autre: Alice ou M. Daldry et j’avais de la difficulté à comprendre sur quoi reposait leur bizarre de relation.

I was really excited for this one. I've read all of this new books since 'Toutes ces choses qu'on ne s'est pas dites'. In my opinion, that book was far better than this one. Usually I find with Marc Levy's novels is that they take time to pick up. This one I found it was exciting from the start. As I kept reading I started getting bored, I felt it was too predictable. I figured out the ending very quickly. I didn't enjoy the rest of the book. I was actually disappointed. I think this book would be great for Hollywood and would make a great motion picture that might even beat the book. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

A lovely tale about love, friendship, self discovery and a mystery to be solved.
Alice Pendelbury has her fortune told by a gypsy on a trip to the seaside. What she is told makes her question who she is. As a result she travels to Turkey with her friend and Neighbour Mr Daldry to find out if the fortune teller was right and that she’ll meet the most important person of her life there.
A great read.

Es patiešām nevaru saprast, kas tieši man nepatīk Levī rakstītajā, jo teorētiski man kā reiz patīk ekscentriski varoņi, sentimentālas lietas un sižeta atstāsts tiešām izklausās pēc tā, ko regulāri lasu labprāt. Bet tā vien rokas tiecās nolikt grāmatu malā un darīt ko citu. Tā nav tāda aktīva nepatika, tikai rādītājs, ka nekādi nevaru saslēgti es ar šo grāmatu un viss. Līdz galam lasīt mudināja interese, kāpēc grāmatu sauc mistera Daldrija vārdā, ja galvenā ir Alise, bet tā arī nesapratu.

Apesar de ser um livro bastante curto, demorei mais de 2 semanas para o ler. Não porque não me estivesse a agradar, porque estava, embora que moderadamente, mas porque agosto não é o meu melhor mês de leituras.
Ainda assim estava muito curiosa com a viagem de Daldry e de Alice, e ainda que tenha achado que a história se arrastou um pouco, as últimas 40 páginas foram lidas com bastante sofreguidão e acabei por gostar bastante do desfecho.
Quero sem dúvida ler mais Marc Levy, mas numa altura em que consiga ter melhor rendimento de leitura.

I was disappointed in this story, which held some promise in the beginning, but it fizzled out by the middle and was a complete let down in the end. The story was long and drawn out with many scenes that do nothing to move the story forward only contributed to the torturously boring middle and general slow pace of the entire book. Very little happens in the first three-quarters of the story, there is no real climax, and the ending, which becomes easily predicted halfway through, is rather rushed as it tries (unsuccessfully) to wrap up all the pieces in just a few pages. The characters - who are all pushing 40 - think, act and live more like twenty year olds than people who have reached middle age - making all of them quite unbelievable. I was also bother by the idea that a five year old was too young to retain any memories - especially when those memories involve monumental life changes. Four stars for Levy's ability to invoke sight, sound and smell with his words, and for the backstory that included the history of Turkey and its Armenian immigrant population, which I found interesting. However, the characters and the majority of the story that trudges along and goes no where are sadly deserving of only 1.5/2 stars.
