There are intermittent moments when this book comes close to capturing some of that EVIL DEAD magic. Unfortunately, though, ASHES 2 ASHES doesn't really know what to do with itself other than rehash everything you love from the films. The twisty, overly-complicated time-travel plot comes across as a lame attempt to recycle all the familiar EVIL DEAD story elements and milk them for one last go-around.
I didn’t remember this book as very good when I pulled it from storage and it wasn’t. Heavy reliance on catch phrases (some that weren’t even actual catch phrases in the movies), not particularly good art, and the story is kind of jumpy and confusing.
Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes is a boisterous romp that picks up where the Army of Darkness movie left off.
Ash Williams is back in the present, but, as usual, he didn't correctly enunciate when opening the portal that sent him back home. So he arrived a little early. Now the fate of the world is in his hands - again!
Wise Man is back from the year 1300 to help Ash on his quest to destroy the Necronomicon once and for all. Ash has to go to the cabin in the woods and make sure his past self creates the portal that sends him back in time so that his future self can finally fulfill his destiny as the Chosen One.
Meanwhile, past Ash is being his typical, difficult self. Not only is past Ash refusing to help, but he's also actively fighting his future self. Ash's evil hand is back in on the action, too. So is Evil Ash.
Taking place over 700 years, Ashes 2 Ashes is a rambunctious chase through time where the forces of evil are constantly nipping at our hero's heels.
Andy Hartnell's script moves a little too quickly at some points, like when he's heading toward the story's climax. A couple of things happen with no explanation. Fortunately, these things don't take way from the story's readability, even if they are slightly jarring.
Nick Bradshaw's stylized, cartoony pencils lend themselves perfectly to Bruce Campbell's slapstick portrayal of Ash Williams. At times, it would have been nice to see the script and artwork take a more serious tone to reflect what's happening in the story, but you can't win 'em all.
Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes is a fun time any Evil Dead fan (who doesn't take themselves too seriously) will enjoy.
I'll start by saying the art is cute! At least, right up until it comes around to portraying women. While typical of the era and the series, the way women are drawn just contributes to them being nothing more than the sexy lamps the writing has them being. It's not out of place next to Army of Darkness, but it's still frustrating.
It misses a lot of the charm of the Evil Dead series and ends up feeling a little rushed. There's an overreliance on using catch-phrases, like the writer is elbowing us and winking each time. Some of them aren't even catch-phrases from the movies, they're just things I guess Ash said once.
I did like some moments. It wasn't the worst comic I've read, but I was eager for it to be done.
Absolute trash and an insult to the Evil Dead franchise. This supposedly takes place right after the events of Army of Darkness (the movie) and has Ash going on a ho-hum adventure with the ultimate been-there, done-that feel. The art is cartoony and unbefitting of the series, as is the stale dialogue and BORING story. I can't even recommend this for purists of the franchise. Stay far, far away.
Of all the endless amount ofArmy of Darkness stuff Dynamite has pumped out I think this is the best, Nick's art is lovely with each panel full of details and brings a constant kinetic energy to the story.
Every subsequent series and relaunch seems to be done on autopilot or at least underpaid artists on a deadline.
It's not the best of the Army of Darkness comics. Actually, it relies a little too much on being a repeat of the film Army of Darkness but with a slightly different setting. But it's not a bad read, over all.
Ash travels through time to just before his departure and then tries to go back to the cabin in time to change things. Also, a whole bunch of other stuff relating to attempting to destroy the book happens. There are bits of this which are fun and funny. And this book definitely keeps things moving without getting dull or repetitive. The time travel thing I found a little hackneyed and confusing, but it was over quickly enough that it didn't really detract from the book very much. On the whole, the plot pulls Ash around, which is good and there are some funny bits. But in the end, it moves a little too quickly and it's a little hard to follow quite what's going on, especially with the later parallel actions between two timelines. Also, the action scenes are hard to follow sometimes. The art has a very animated quality to it, but sometimes without actual animation, I would lose track of what was supposed to be happening in an action sequence. So, in summary, not terrible, but I wouldn't say I liked it that much either.
Calling this brand new is a bit of a misnomer - about half of the collection is spent retelling the Evil Dead movies, with the other half weaving in and out of them to serve as a jumping off point for the later collections. And a lot of the language and comments are taken straight from the movies - I appreciate them making sure the tone is on point, but seeing the same lines used multiple times in the 4 issues collected here was a little off-putting. The artwork is very cartoonish, which fits the story, although I think the level of detail was too much for the format I was reading it in, making many of the action sequences confused. The continual jumps between the present and the past, the movie retellings and the new sections, also contributed to the fragmented and confused reading. Ultimately, this volume just barely succeeds as a starting point for new stories; if it were a one-off, though, I couldn't recommend it except to the biggest Ash fans. But I am interested to see where they take it from here.
I very rarely give one star to something. But this had almost nothing to do with Evil Dead I remember. It is cartoonish art that will not allow you to believe anything that is going on. The story is weak at best. I was bored so I read it till the end but this is really really bad. And it is written on the book that it is gory :D it is not. not even close to level Evil Dead was famous for.
Plus all jokes are really bad. If you think that you will at least laugh here..you will not
