I remember as a boy the utter anticipation that came with the experience of reading. Sitting alone with the latest Ian Fleming James Bond book was an sensory delight. The smell of the new pages, the colors of the cover and page trim, the weight in my hands. All just a prelude to the world of fast cars, loose women and wondrous physical feats performed by a cool Superhero. Hey whats not to like, update, similar feelings during my journey through ordeals and fantasy of the ultimate anti-hero Lisabeth Salander. So many visceral comparisons along with a renewed sense of guilty pleasure. Ah to have a conclusion, thank you fiction writer Mr Larsson, so unlike my years of work reading Non-Fiction, where fact is disputed as soon as faced with no end or conclusion just more questions along with a bit of hopelessness. So, I think this is not the proper time to review this dark trilogy. I wait to do a more serious review as soon as I get the image of a boy on a stoop reading about a spy out of my head, I hope you can tell I am not exerting much energy in pushing that image out at this time as it simply feels too good, hey I just eat an extra serving of greens to compensate.
Stieg Larson's three books about Lisbeth Salander is one of the great mystery thriller book series. The first two books built an incredible platform for the third book, "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest."
It's tragic Stieg Larson pasted away at young age. Had he lived I think he would have written a couple more great books for this series. If you haven't read a detailed bio of his life I would suggest you do so, before reading this book. I think the third book especially was influenced by things that happened in his own life. I think it was interesting that he felt he had to keep his own personal address a secret, because of constant death threats to his life. I wonder how much of Steig himself is present in the Mikael Blomkvist. It's also interesting that there are a lot of people who believe he was murdered and it was made to look like a heart attack. We'll never know, but it adds to the mystery. I'll repeat what I said about the previous book in this series. Once you start reading this book you won't want to put it down.
It was a good read, very entertaining. It wasn't as good as "The Girl Who Played With Fire" but this book finishes the story. The story doesn't move as quickly as the previous book. The cast of characters is large and confusing at times because of the similarity of names. You can get bogged down in references to recent Swedish political history, which the story seems to have partially been inspired by. The Swedish political and legal system is a mystery in its self. Without a knowledge of Sweden and Stockholm you lose the sense of character movement even though maps are included in the book. If you chop off the distracting things the plot is imaginative, the story unfolds in an exciting manner, the characters stir your emotions. I had trouble putting it down. It's too bad Stieg Larsson has passed on. I will miss Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist.
I am currently reading this and, I must say, I like this MUCH better than the second book in the trilogy. Not sure why, except that the puzzle is starting to come together. I am about half way through and intrigued by how the author will wrap up the triplogy of Liz Salandar et al.
UPDATE: Just finished this book and it was a great read. I almost did not read it since I was a bit exhausted with the characters, but felt I had already invested a lot of time into this triology. Glad I did read it and it is my favorite of the three.
It picks up from The Girl Who Played with Fire in an exciting spot then imidiatly died down. Then started going into lengthy discussion. I like the parts where they expand on the interesting story started by the previous book, but there is a lot of fluff, like the first book in the series. I was happy with the conclusion.
This started out really slowly for me, but after reading the two other books, I had to finish it. The end of the book got me hoooked. I admit, a relief to be done with these intense books, but sure glad I did it!
Knowing that the author planned this as a 10 book series, and that he died after the third book was complete...I was thrilled that at least this felt complete. This trilogy was such a complex and interesting read, it's tough to find a next book that feels up to par. Loved this series.
Loved it --- many stories within one. i don't know what to saw except can't wait to see the 1st movie with the girl with the dragon tatoo..... what a shame such a wonderful author had to leave us much too early.
Fantastic book. It, like the previous two books in the trilogy, was riveting. It is so sad to know that no further books will be forthcoming...that is unless the author's live in girlfriend, releases the book he was writing prior to his untimely death. Great read.
After struggling to get through the very first book in this series, I was committed to finishing it. I'm so glad I did, as I feel this last book was the best of the three. I really enjoyed this one, even though it took over a month to read it!
This is the third book. I got half-way and just had to stop. I lost interest. The stories are so complex, by this book I was tired of the author introductin new characters. I want to give it a second chance because my friends loved it.
It makes me so sad to think that Larsson turned in the manuscript for these three books and then suddenly died from a heartattack. There won't be anymore written and you can see there are several story lines that he was going to continue in future books. A great three books.
The final in the Millennium trilogy and the conclusion of book 2. One of the most interesting books I've read, even though it was so difficult dealing with Swedish names (is that female or...?). Sad to end it. Probably best that there are no more in the series.
ah yes I read book 3, not 2. more enjoyable as less sordid! really enjoyed his style of writing this time. all facts and journal like but easy to read.
This who series is fantastic. This particular book was a little slow in the beginning bue the book was great. It is too bad the author is no longer with us.
This one was my favorite of the series. I did need to keep a sticky note in the book at first to keep the characters straight as there are many different police involved.
