Karsh (b.1908), now 92 years old and living in Boston, enthusiastically supported the exhibition (December 2000-February 2001; German Historical Museum, Berlin) upon which this book is based. Supported by several essays, three bodies of work are presented (186 b&w photos in all): portraits (the major portion of the book); advertising work of the early 1950s; and special assignments, including promotional photos for tourism in Canada. In particular, Karsh's portraits of eminent people of the 20th century are stunning in their eloquent portrayal of character and essence. The volume is elegantly produced and is oversize (10x12) so that the photos can speak in full voice. Distributed by General Distribution Services. Annotation c.
